Coexistence of amplitude and frequency modulations in intracellular calcium dynamics
The complex dynamics of intracellular calcium regulates cellular responses to
information encoded in extracellular signals. Here, we study the encoding of
these external signals in the context of the Li-Rinzel model. We show that by
control of biophysical parameters the information can be encoded in amplitude
modulation, frequency modulation or mixed (AM and FM) modulation. We briefly
discuss the possible implications of this new role of information encoding for

Evidence of abnormal scalar timing property in alexithymia
: Evidence suggests that incidental modulation of affective states affects the ability to keep track of time. Alexithymia represents an ideal condition to further address the emotion-time processing link, as it refers to a trait characterized by a deficit of affective processing. 31 healthy participants completed an online version of the TAS-20 scale, which measures alexithymia, and a time reproduction task of visual stimuli related to positive (i.e., happiness) and negative (i.e., anger) facial expressions. Results documented a positive correlation between TAS-20 score and the variability in reproducing sub-second durations of the anger expression stimuli We also found an overestimation of sub-second durations of non-affective expressions in borderline/alexithymic participants. Finally, in line with the literature, we confirmed the overall tendency to overestimate the duration of anger expression stimuli. These findings, which can be interpreted in terms of abnormal scalar timing property in alexithymia, expand previous investigations linking this personality trait with abnormal processing of negative emotions. The evidence that alexithymia predicts the reproduction variability of sub-second durations of negative affective stimuli corroborates previous neuroimaging studies documenting cerebellar deficits in these individuals
Disentangling the initiation from the response in joint attention: an eye-tracking study in toddlers with autism spectrum disorders
Joint attention (JA), whose deficit is an early risk marker for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), has two dimensions: (1) responding to JA and (2) initiating JA. Eye-tracking technology has largely been used to investigate responding JA, but rarely to study initiating JA especially in young children with ASD. The aim of this study was to describe the differences in the visual patterns of toddlers with ASD and those with typical development (TD) during both responding JA and initiating JA tasks. Eye-tracking technology was used to monitor the gaze of 17 children with ASD and 15 age-matched children with TD during the presentation of short video sequences involving one responding JA and two initiating JA tasks (initiating JA-1 and initiating JA-2). Gaze accuracy, transitions and fixations were analyzed. No differences were found in the responding JA task between children with ASD and those with TD, whereas, in the initiating JA tasks, different patterns of fixation and transitions were shown between the groups. These results suggest that children with ASD and those with TD show different visual patterns when they are expected to initiate joint attention but not when they respond to joint attention. We hypothesized that differences in transitions and fixations are linked to ASD impairments in visual disengagement from face, in global scanning of the scene and in the ability to anticipate object's action
An intelligent Medical Cyber-Physical System to support heart valve disease screening and diagnosis
Cardiovascular diseases are currently the major causes of death globally. Among the strategies to prevent cardiovascular issues, the automated classification of heart sound abnormalities is an efficient way to detect early signs of cardiac conditions leading to heart failure or other, even asymptomatic, complications, quite effective for timely interventions. Despite the significant improvements in this field, there are still limitations due to the lack of solutions, available data-sets and poor (mainly binary - normal vs abnormal) classification models and algorithms. This paper presents a Medical Cyber-Physical System (MCPS) for the automatic classification of heart valve diseases onsite, in a timely manner. The proposed MCPS, indeed, can be deployed into personal and mobile devices, addressing the limitations of existing solutions for patients, healthcare practitioners, and researchers, through an efficient and easy accessible tool. It combines different neural network models trained on a new Italian dataset of 132 adult patients covering 9 heart sound categories (1 normal and 8 abnormal), also validated against two main open-access (Physionet/CinC Challenge 2016 and Korean) datasets. The overall MCPS performance (time, processing and energy resource utilization) and the high accuracy of the models (up to 98%) demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed solution, even with few data. Gender Influences Virtual Reality-Based Recovery of Cognitive Functions in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial
The rehabilitation of cognitive deficits in individuals with traumatic brain injury is essential for promoting patients’ recovery and autonomy. Virtual reality (VR) training is a powerful tool for reaching this target, although the effectiveness of this intervention could be interfered with by several factors. In this study, we evaluated if demographical and clinical variables could be related to the recovery of cognitive function in TBI patients after a well-validated VR training. One hundred patients with TBI were enrolled in this study and equally randomized into the Traditional Cognitive Rehabilitation Group (TCRG: n = 50) or Virtual Reality Training Group (VRTG: n = 50). The VRTG underwent a VRT with BTs-N, whereas the TCRG received standard cognitive treatment. All the patients were evaluated by a complete neuropsychological battery before (T0) and after the end of the training (T1). We found that the VR-related improvement in mood, as well as cognitive flexibility, and selective attention were influenced by gender. Indeed, females who underwent VR training were those showing better cognitive recovery. This study highlights the importance of evaluating gender effects in planning cognitive rehabilitation programs. The inclusion of different repetitions and modalities of VR training should be considered for TBI male patients
A high-performance measurement system for simultaneous mass and resistance variation measurements on gas sensing polymer films
Abstract This paper describes a high-performance system set-up for measurements with gas sensitive polymeric layers. The polymeric films are deposited on prototypal Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensors that allow both quartz frequency resonance variation and polymer resistance measurements. This capability adds new dimensions to the feature space allowing the improvement of the system performance. The measurement system is able to simultaneously measure the polymer resistance as well as the QCM frequency variation with high resolution (<2 /60 k and <0.1 Hz/10 MHz) and fast sampling rate (≈20 ms)

Modeling gaze behavior with continuous-time markov chains to investigate social attention dynamics in autism
This study introduces a novel methodological framework combining continuous-time Markov chains and principal component analysis (PCA) to model and investigate gaze behavior in young children observing naturalistic social interactions. By quantifying transition propensities between areas of interest (AOIs), this approach enables a dynamic, data-driven analysis of gaze patterns beyond static fixation metrics. We applied this framework to eye-tracking data from children with autism spectrum condition (ASC) and neurotypical (NT) peers as they watched scenes of a child and an adult engaged in interactive play, involving turn-taking and reciprocal imitation. The stimuli, designed to ensure ecological validity, depicted sensory social routines (SSRs) with songs and shared play with musical instruments, allowing exploration of gaze dynamics in both dyadic and triadic social contexts. Results revealed distinct gaze transition profiles in ASC children, characterized by more frequent disengagement from socially salient AOIs and reduced re-orientation to faces following non-social fixations. In contrast, NT children exhibited frequent gaze alternation between faces and triangulation with objects, supporting joint attention and reciprocal engagement. Additionally, ASC participants were more likely to enter and persist in non-social states, especially during object-centered trials, whereas NT peers showed consistent transitions toward socially meaningful targets. These findings highlight the relevance of capturing the temporal patterns of visual engagement in autism, revealing how moment-to-moment gaze transition dynamics reflect underlying differences in social motivation, attentional control, and sensory processing. The proposed framework provides a powerful tool for characterizing individual differences in gaze organization and holds promise for advancing biomarker identification in neurodevelopmental research
Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Physical and Psychological Wellbeing in Cardiovascular Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Background: Recently, there has been an increased interest in the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) for people with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), although the exact beneficial effects remain unclear. Methods: This review aims to establish the role of MBI in the management of wellbeing for patients with CVD. Seventeen articles have been included in this systematic synthesis of the literature and eleven in the meta-analysis. Results: Considering physical (i.e., heart rate, blood pressure) and psychological outcomes (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress, styles of coping), the vast majority of studies confirmed that MBI has a positive influence on coping with psychological risk factors, also improving physiological fitness. Random-effects meta-analysis models suggested a moderate-to-large effect size in reducing anxiety, depression, stress, and systolic blood pressure. Conclusions: Although a high heterogeneity was observed in the methodological approaches, scientific literature confirmed that MBI can now be translated into a first-line intervention tool for improving physical and psychological wellbeing in CVD patients
