    Puddles, parties and professors: linking word categorization to neural patterns of visuospatial coding

Specifically, whereas "overhead" (e. g., attic), positive (e. g., party), and powerful nouns (e. g., professor) are associated with "up," "underfoot" (e. g., carpet), negative (e. g., accident), and powerless nouns (e. g., assistant) are associated with "down." What has yet to be elucidated, however, is the precise nature of these effects. To explore this issue, an fMRI experiment was undertaken, during which participants were required to categorize the position in which geometrical shapes appeared on a computer screen (i.e., upper or lower part of the display). In addition, they also judged a series of words with regard to location (i.e., up vs. down), valence (i.e., good vs. bad), and power (i.e., powerful vs. powerless). Using multivoxel pattern analysis, it was found that classifiers that successfully distinguished between the positions of shapes in subregions of the inferior parietal lobe also provided discriminatory information to separate location and valence, but not power word judgments. Correlational analyses further revealed that, for location words, pattern transfer was more successful the stronger was participants' propensity to use visual imagery. These findings indicate that visual coding and conceptual processing can elicit common representations of verticality but that divergent mechanisms may support the reported effects

    Morphological and morphometric measurement of the temporomandibular joint of small and medium-weight dogs with different skull shapes

    BackgroundThe recognition and diagnosis of canine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease can be a challenge, often leaving them undiagnosed. Although computed tomography (CT) has proved to be highly efficacious in detecting joint disease in the TMJ, morphometric and morphological studies of the normal TMJ have been scarce. Especially, skull type specific anatomical differences of the TMJ in dogs of different weights and skull morphologies have received limited attention.ObjectiveThis study aimed to compare the TMJ morphologies of dogs across different weight classes and skull types.Study designRetrospective study.MethodsCT scans were used to measure the depth and width of the Fossa mandibularis and two angles between the Fossa mandibularis and the Caput mandibulae in a total of 92 dogs and 182 mandibular joints, respectively.ResultsThe TMJ varied in terms of weight groups and skull indices. Shallow mandibular pits, underdeveloped retroarticular processes, and reduced joint congruency were observed particularly in light-weight and brachycephalic dogs. Conversely, dolichocephalic animals displayed deep joint pits, pronounced joint congruency, and a well-developed Processus retroarticularis.Main limitationsObserver learning curve; not every skull shape was represented in each weight group

    Physical status, symptoms and health-related quality of life during a severe exacerbation of COPD: Recovery and discriminative capacity for future events

    Objective: Severe acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) can have a negative impact on functional capacity, symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study aimed to i) investigate the recovery of muscle strength, functional capacity, symptoms, and HRQOL in patients after a severe AECOPD; ii) compare with matched patients with stable COPD (SCOPD); and iii) assess whether these assessments at hospital discharge could discriminate patients’ risk for future events. Methods: This observational study assessed patients with AECOPD during hospital discharge (T1) and one month after discharge (T2). Patients with SCOPD were assessed once. Quadriceps force, handgrip strength, short physical performance battery (SPPB), 6-min walk distance (6 MWD), COPD assessment test (CAT), London chest activity of daily living (LCADL), modified medical research council, checklist individual strength-fatigue, patient health questionnaire, and physical activity (Actigraph) were measured. Exacerbation-related readmission and mortality within six months and 1-year were collected. Results: Forty-four patients with AECOPD were matched with 44 patients with SCOPD. At T2, a significant improvement was found for the SPPB total score, 6 MWD, CAT score, and LCADL score. Compared to patients with SCOPD, a worse LCADL score was found at T2 in patients with AECOPD. Patients with AECOPD that were readmitted or died had a worse SPPB classification and five-repetition sit-to-stand test at T1. Conclusion: Patients after severe AECOPD improved in functional capacity and HRQOL one month after hospital discharge, but ADL performance was still worse compared to SCOPD.     Visual attention and action: How cueing, direct mapping, and social interactions drive orienting

    Despite considerable interest in both action perception and social attention over the last 2 decades, there has been surprisingly little investigation concerning how the manual actions of other humans orient visual attention. The present review draws together studies that have measured the orienting of attention, following observation of another’s goal-directed action. Our review proposes that, in line with the literature on eye gaze, action is a particularly strong orienting cue for the visual system. However, we additionally suggest that action may orient visual attention using mechanisms, which gaze direction does not (i.e., neural direct mapping and corepresentation). Finally, we review the implications of these gaze-independent mechanisms for the study of attention to action. We suggest that our understanding of attention to action may benefit from being studied in the context of joint action paradigms, where the role of higher level action goals and social factors can be investigated

    Responding to social and symbolic extrafoveal cues: Cue shape trumps biological relevance

    Social cues presented at visual fixation have been shown to strongly influence an observer’s attention and response selection. Here we ask whether the same holds for cues (initially) presented away from fixation, more alike how cues are commonly perceived in natural vision. In six experiments, we show that extrafoveally presented cues with a distinct outline, such as pointing hands, rotated heads, and arrow cues result in strong cueing of responses (either to the cue itself, or a cued object). In contrast, cues without a clear outline, such as gazing eyes and direction words have a much weaker effects on participants’ responses to a target cue. We also show that distraction effects on response times are relatively weak, but that strong interference effects can be obtained by measuring mouse trajectories. Eye tracking suggests that gaze cues are slower to respond to because their direction cannot easily be perceived in extrafoveal vision. Together these data suggest that the strength of an extrafoveal cue is determined by the shape of the outline of the cue, rather than its biological relevance (i.e., whether the cue is provided by another human being), and that this shape effect is due to how easily the direction of the cue can be perceived in extrafoveal vision

    Specialized inpatient treatment of adult anorexia nervosa: effectiveness and clinical significance of changes

    Background: Previous studies have predominantly evaluated the effectiveness of inpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa at the group level. The aim of this study was to evaluate treatment outcomes at an individual level based on the clinical significance of improvement. Patients' treatment outcomes were classified into four groups: deteriorated, unchanged, reliably improved and clinically significantly improved. Furthermore, the study set out to explore predictors of clinically significant changes in eating disorder psychopathology. Methods: A total of 435 inpatients were assessed at admission and at discharge on the following measures: body-mass-index, eating disorder symptoms, general psychopathology, depression and motivation for change. Results: 20.0-32.0% of patients showed reliable changes and 34.1-55.3% showed clinically significant changes in the various outcome measures. Between 23.0% and 34.5% remained unchanged and between 1.7% and 3.0% deteriorated. Motivation for change and depressive symptoms were identified as positive predictors of clinically significant changes in eating disorder psychopathology, whereas body dissatisfaction, impulse regulation, social insecurity and education were negative predictors. Conclusions: Despite high rates of reliable and clinically significant changes following intensive inpatient treatment, about one third of anorexia nervosa patients showed no significant response to treatment. Future studies should focus on the identification of non-responders as well as on the development of treatment strategies for these patients
