A comparison was made of air temperature anomaly maps for the months of January and July against a background of high and low secular solar activity, with and without regard for the 11 year cycle. By comparing temperature variations during the 11 year and secular cycles, it is found that the 11 year cycle influences thermal conditions more strongly than the secular cycle, and that temperature differences between extreme phases of the solar cycles are greater in January than in July

Obtaining experimental data on the nature of the percolation transition processes in hydraulic drive on the basis of discrete-regulated axial-piston hydraulic machines; the comparison of experimental data with the results of numerical calculation. Methodology. The study of transient processes was carried out by means of a using a hydraulic drive on the basis of axial piston hydromachines of 403 series, with volume of 112 cubic centimetres on an experimental stand with a capacity recuperation. Pressure in pressure line and hydraulic motor control line, speed of pump rotation and flow rate through overload relief valve continuously registered. The experimental data were compared with results of numerical calculation. Scope of the results. The obtained results can be used when designing more efficient and reliable hydraulic drives of road-building machines. Conclusions. Comparison of experimental data and results of numerical calculation shows that the proposed by authors a mathematical model of hydraulic drive on the base of discrete-controlled axial piston hydromachines with cylinder’s tilting block, adequately reflects basic physical processes that determine the operation of hydraulic drive. For further improvement of the model it’s necessary to specify the model of hydraulic machine’s control block and consider wave effects in the pipelines of pressure line and hydraulic cylinders of pumping unit.Исследованы переходные процессы в гидроприводах, на основе дискретно регулируемых аксиально-поршневых гидромашин с наклонным блоком цилиндров, возникающие при включении и изменении режима работы гидропривода. Modelling and simulation of the sea-landing of aerial vehicles using the Particle Finite Element Method

    Get PDF
In this paper the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) is applied to the simulation of the sea-landing of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The problem of interest consists in modelling the impact of the vehicle against the water surface, analyzing the main kinematic and dynamic quantities (such as loads exerted upon the capsule at the moment of the impact). The PFEM, a methodology well-suited for free-surface flow simulation is used for modelling the water while a rigid body model is chosen for the vehicle. The vehicle under consideration is characterized by low weight. This leads to difficulties in modelling the fluid–structure interaction using standard Dirichlet–Neumann coupling. We apply a modified partitioned strategy introducing the interface Laplacian into the pressure Poisson's equation for obtaining a convergent FSI solution. The paper concludes with an industrial example of a vehicle sea-landing modelled using PFEM

Inhibition of IκB Kinase by Vaccinia Virus Virulence Factor B14

The IκB kinase (IKK) complex is a key regulator of signal transduction pathways leading to the induction of NF-κB-dependent gene expression and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. It therefore represents a major target for the development of anti-inflammatory therapeutic drugs and may be targeted by pathogens seeking to diminish the host response to infection. Previously, the vaccinia virus (VACV) strain Western Reserve B14 protein was characterised as an intracellular virulence factor that alters the inflammatory response to infection by an unknown mechanism. Here we demonstrate that ectopic expression of B14 inhibited NF-κB activation in response to TNFα, IL-1β, poly(I:C), and PMA. In cells infected with VACV lacking gene B14R (vΔB14) there was a higher level of phosphorylated IκBα but a similar level of IκBα compared to cells infected with control viruses expressing B14, suggesting B14 affects IKK activity. Direct evidence for this was obtained by showing that B14 co-purified and co-precipitated with the endogenous IKK complex from human and mouse cells and inhibited IKK complex enzymatic activity. Notably, the interaction between B14 and the IKK complex required IKKβ but not IKKα, suggesting the interaction occurs via IKKβ. B14 inhibited NF-κB activation induced by overexpression of IKKα, IKKβ, and a constitutively active mutant of IKKα, S176/180E, but did not inhibit a comparable mutant of IKKβ, S177/181E. This suggested that phosphorylation of these serine residues in the activation loop of IKKβ is targeted by B14, and this was confirmed using Ab specific for phospho-IKKβ

A semi-analytical model for droplet dynamics on the GDL surface of a PEFC electrode

Water management is one of the key factors in Proton Exchange Fuel Cell (PEFC) performance. The water produced within the fuel cell is evacuated through the gas channels, but at high current densities water can block the channel, thus limiting the current density generated in the fuel cell. A semi-analytical model of a water droplet emerging from a gas diffusion layer pore in a PEFC channel is developed. The transient model contains a detailed adhesion and drag force estimation model. Results show that the predicted values for both drag and surface tension force are higher than the results found in literature. The results for the detachment force are consistent with the experimental data available. Higher air velocity values lead to more deformation of the droplet and oscillation with lower frequency but higher amplitude. Similar effects have been identified when the liquid mass flow is increased, leading to faster detachment of the droplet

Estimation and forecast of regional competitiveness level

The paper is devoted to the development of methods for point and interval forecasting of the integral index of regional competitiveness. We stick to one of the most commonly used approaches to assessing the level of competitiveness based on its advantages over the others. As a result of this approach, the integral competitiveness index appears to be bounded, i.e. has a lower and upper limit. Due to this particular feature, it is proposed to carry out the forecasting of competitiveness index using multivariate logistic regression. The parameters of such model are determined using OLS through an inverse logarithmic transformation of the dependent variable. To calculate interval forecasts for the model, we proposed a new probability distribution for the errors of the nonlinear regression equation in the class of logistic curves. According to the proposed method, we calculated and forecasted the regional competitiveness level for the Russian Federation until 2020. The analysis of the data revealed some features of the regions distribution in terms of competitiveness level and indicated regional development trends. The paper has been prepared within the research project No 1675: "Methodological and analytical tools for solving problems of spatial development of Russian economy under conditions of modern reforms" in terms of the basic part of the state order in the field of scientific activity of Russian Ministry of Education. © Copyright 2005-2016 Institute of Economics, the Ural branch of the RAS. A particle finite element based model for droplet spreading analysis

    Get PDF
A particle finite element method (PFEM) based model is proposed to analyze droplet dynamics problems, particularly droplet spreading on solid substrates (wetting). The model uses an updated Lagrangian framework to formulate the governing equations of the liquid. Curvature of the liquid surface is tracked accurately using a deforming boundary mesh. In order to predict the spreading rate of the droplet on the solid substrate and track the corresponding contact angle evolution, dissipative forces at the contact line are included in the formulation in addition to the Navier-slip boundary conditions at the solid-liquid interface. The inclusion of these boundary conditions makes it possible to account for the induced Young's stress at the contact line and for the viscous dissipation along the solid-liquid interfacial region. They are found to be essential to obtain a mesh-independent physical solution. The temporal evolution of the contact angle and contact line velocity of the proposed model are compared with spreading droplets and micro sessile-droplet injection experiments, and are shown to be in good agreement
