Evaluación de la falla del bracket en relación con diferentes factores en pacientes que reciben tratamiento ortodóntico integral: Un estudio de cohorte retrospectivo.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate loose brackets in relation to various related factors in orthodontic patients who had completed orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, 738 medical records of patients who had undergone comprehensive orthodontic treatment and matched specific inclusion criteria were selected. Paired t-tests and ANOVA, along with the Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal–Wallis analyses were performed to compare the means of variables between selected subgroups. Results: Loose brackets were found most frequently on premolars, followed by incisors and then canines (p<0.01). Male and young patients were found to have a higher incidence of loose brackets compared to female and adult patients (p=0.044 and p<0.01, respectively). The highest correlation coefficient value was found between treatment duration and total number of loose brackets (0.393), which was statistically significant. Conclusions: The frequency of total number of loose brackets increased with younger age group. Premolar teeth were found to be the most commonly affected teeth, followed by incisors and canines. Mandibular teeth presented more loose brackets than maxillary.
The discovery of an in situ Neanderthal remain in the Bawa Yawan Rockshelter, West-Central Zagros Mountains, Kermanshah.
Neanderthal extinction has been a matter of debate for many years. New discoveries, better chronologies and genomic evidence have done much to clarify some of the issues. This evidence suggests that Neanderthals became extinct around 40,000-37,000 years before present (BP), after a period of coexistence with Homo sapiens of several millennia, involving biological and cultural interactions between the two groups. However, the bulk of this evidence relates to Western Eurasia, and recent work in Central Asia and Siberia has shown that there is considerable local variation. Southwestern Asia, despite having a number of significant Neanderthal remains, has not played a major part in the debate over extinction. Here we report a Neanderthal deciduous canine from the site of Bawa Yawan in the West-Central Zagros Mountains of Iran. The tooth is associated with Zagros Mousterian lithics, and its context is preliminary dated to between ~43,600 and ~41,500 years ago
Protein Analyzer Autosampler
Significance & Problem Statement: Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the pharmaceutical industry is under increasing pressure to get high quality antibodies for vaccine production in the hopes of saving millions of lives. To accomplish this, the bioprocessing industry has transitioned to automated processing of samples. IDEX, the company behind the Tridex Protein Analyzer, hopes to extend Tridex\u27s capabilities to automated sample processing to expand into this market segment. This is because, despite a fast readout of protein concentration, manual sampling of proteins into the Tridex can be a tedious and time consuming process. However, the Tridex machine lacks a compatible autosampler that would expedite this process; third-party autosamplers often introduce inefficiencies in the sampling process by way of incompatible software. Additionally, without an autosampler developed in-house, IDEX cannot offer full satisfactory customer support to the Tridex users, preventing the company from further expanding the Tridex sales in the bioprocessing industry.
Objectives: In this project, we strived to create protocols and software that can be used by IDEX for their autosampler design. Our main objectives for this technology were to provide seamless communication between the autosampler and Tridex unit through a tailored software; achieving low cross contamination between samples by designing appropriate cleaning and operation protocols; providing ease of use through automated operation of the autosampler and panels for the design of a straightforward user interface; and time savings through synchronization of the autosampler operational cycle and the Tridex analysis cycle.
Innovation: There are many high-quality autosamplers currently available in the market. Therefore, our main innovation in this project is not to create brand new technology to substitute what is already the gold-standard in the industry, but to creatively integrate the autosampling system into the protein analyser. This will be achieved through a robust microfluidics system using IDEX valves, pumps and tubing; a tailored communication system between the autosampler and analyser units; thoroughly tested protocols; and a focus on creating a highly specific product that is easy to use. Other than the clear technical advantages, the innovation also makes sense from a business perspective, allowing IDEX to branch out into a new market segment, control costs, have higher profits, control the software, and offer full customer support for the Tridex users.
Approach: Given that most autosamplers on the market are already of high quality and design, we have focused, instead, on a simplified product and seamless communication protocol with Tridex. We have built an open-source autosampler design from which we were able to test and design our operations and cleaning protocols. Tests included a beta Tridex unit sent to us by IDEX for cross contamination measurements. Software was developed based on an open-source Python program to control the movement of the autosampler, which was adapted to include IDEX fluidic parts, run our designed protocols, and communicate with the Tridex unit. We also mapped the user journey to pre-design an intuitive user interface for the autosampler and that incorporates the IDEX brand
Influence of Diode Laser for the Treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity on Microleakage of Cervical Restorations
Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are a common clinical finding often linked with dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of diode laser for the treatment of DH on microleakage of subsequent NCCL restorations. Materials and Methods. Forty-eight extracted human premolars were collected. All teeth received standardized cervical preparation on both the buccal and palatal surfaces and were randomly divided into three groups (
n
=

) according to the restorative material used: nanohybrid composite resin (CR), resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI), and conventional glass ionomer (GIC). The prepared cavities on the palatal surfaces were treated by diode laser using SIROlaser Blue (Sirona Dental Systems, Bensheim, Germany) prior to restoration, while preparations on the buccal surfaces were directly restored. After thermocycling, the teeth were immersed in methylene blue dye for microleakage evaluation under 40x magnification at both occlusal and cervical margins. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Bonferroni tests was conducted to determine inter- and intragroup differences (
P
<
0.05
). Results. All restorative materials tested showed some degree of microleakage with no statistically significantly different scores with or without the use of laser desensitization prior to restorative treatment. Group CR showed the least microleakage, followed by group RMGI, while group GIC showed the highest. Cervical margins showed greater microleakage than the occlusal margins where the difference was statistically significant in the RMGI group without laser pretreatment (
P
=
0.006
) and in both groups CR (
P
=
0.02
) and RMGI (
P
=
0.006
) with the laser pretreatment. Conclusion. Application of diode laser for the treatment of DH prior to the restoration of teeth with NCCL did not affect the microleakage of all the restorative materials tested. All the materials showed some degree of microleakage, which was higher in gingival margins compared to occlusal margins. The resin composite shows the least microleakage among all the tested materials.</jats:p
