Effects of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and whole-body hypothermia on neonatal auditory function: a pilot study.
We assessed the effects of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and whole-body hypothermia therapy on auditory brain stem evoked responses (ABRs) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). We performed serial assessments of ABRs and DPOAEs in newborns with moderate or severe HIE, randomized to hypothermia ( N = 4) or usual care ( N = 5). Participants were five boys and four girls with mean gestational age (standard deviation) of 38.9 (1.8) weeks. During the first week of life, peripheral auditory function, as measured by the DPOAEs, was disrupted in all nine subjects. ABRs were delayed but central transmission was intact, suggesting a peripheral rather than a central neural insult. By 3 weeks of age, peripheral auditory function normalized. Hypothermia temporarily prolonged the ABR, more so for waves generated higher in the brain stem but the effects reversed quickly on rewarming. Neonatal audiometric testing is feasible, noninvasive, and capable of enhancing our understanding of the effects of HIE and hypothermia on auditory function
Detection of a Series of X-ray Dips Associated with a Radio Flare in GRS 1915+105
We report the detection of a series of X-ray dips in the Galactic black hole
candidate GRS 1915+105 during 1999 June 6-17 from observations carried out with
the Pointed Proportional Counters of the Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment on
board the Indian satellite IRS-P3. The observations were made after the source
made a transition from a steady low-hard state to a chaotic state which
occuered within a few hours. Dips of about 20-160 seconds duration are observed
on most of the days. The X-ray emission outside the dips shows a QPO at ~ 4 Hz
which has characteristics similar to the ubiquitous 0.5 - 10 Hz QPO seen during
the low-hard state of the source. During the onset of dips this QPO is absent
and also the energy spectrum is soft and the variability is low compared to the
non-dip periods. These features gradually re-appear as the dip recovers. The
onset of the occurrence of a large number of such dips followed the start of a
huge radio flare of strength 0.48 Jy (at 2.25 GHz). We interpret these dips as
the cause for mass ejection due to the evacuation of matter from an accretion
disk around the black hole. We propose that a super-position of a large number

Changes in the PQRST intervals and heart rate variability associated with rewarming in two newborns undergoing hypothermia therapy.
BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effects of hypothermia therapy and subsequent rewarming on the PQRST intervals and heart rate variability (HRV) in term newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
OBJECTIVES: This study describes the changes in the PQRST intervals and HRV during rewarming to normal core body temperature of 2 newborns with HIE after hypothermia therapy.
METHODS: Within 6 h after birth, 2 newborns with HIE were cooled to a core body temperature of 33.5 degrees C for 72 h using a cooling blanket, followed by gradual rewarming (0.5 degrees C per hour) until the body temperature reached 36.5 degrees C. Custom instrumentation recorded the electrocardiogram from the leads used for clinical monitoring of vital signs. Generalized linear mixed models were calculated to estimate temperature-related changes in PQRST intervals and HRV. Results: For every 1 degrees C increase in body temperature, the heart rate increased by 9.2 bpm (95% CI 6.8-11.6), the QTc interval decreased by 21.6 ms (95% CI 17.3-25.9), and low and high frequency HRV decreased by 0.480 dB (95% CI 0.052-0.907) and 0.938 dB (95% CI 0.460-1.416), respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: Hypothermia-induced changes in the electrocardiogram should be monitored carefully in future studies
Different types of X-ray bursts from GRS 1915+105 and their origin
We report the X-ray observations of the Galactic X-ray transient source GRS
1915+105 with the PPCs of the Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment(IXAE) onboard
the Indian satellite IRS-P3 during 1997 June - August, which have revealed the
presence of four types of intense X-ray bursts. All the observed bursts have a
slow exponential rise, a sharp linear decay, and they can broadly be put in two
classes: irregular and quasi-regular bursts in one class, and regular bursts in
another class. The regular bursts are found to have two distinct time scales
and they persist over extended durations. There is a strong correlation between
the preceding quiescent time and the burst duration for the quasi-regular and
irregular bursts. No such correlation is found for the regular bursts. The
ratio of average flux during the burst time to the average flux during the
quiescent phase is high and variable for the quasi- regular and irregular
bursts while it is low and constant for the regular bursts. We suggest that the
peculiar bursts that we have seen are charact- eristic of the change of state
of the source. The source can switch back and forth between the low-hard state
and the high-soft state near critical accretion rates in a very short time
scale. A test of the model is presented using the publicly available 13-60 keV
RXTE/PCA data for irregular and regular bursts concurrent with our

Detection of avian metapneumovirus field infection via reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and ELISA in two layer farms in Johore
Avian metapneumovirus (AMPV) infection which is known as 'swollen head syndrome' has been shown to be prevalent in poultry farms in Malaysia. Two layer farms in Johor denoted as Farm A and Farm B, with previous history of AMPV disease outbreak, were the subjects used for the AMPV field investigation in this study. Thirty chicks from respective treatment groups were monitored at day old, two, four and six weeks of age for AMPV antibody and antigen detection. RT-PCR and ELISA serology indicate that at 2 weeks of age. AMPV field infection had occured in Farm A. In Farm B, AMPV field infection or lateral spread of vaccine was observed as early as 2 weeks. AMPV seroconversion was generally observed at four weeks of age and AMPV subtypes A and B were detected via RT-PCR from both farms in this study. This is the first report of AMPV subtypes A and B by RT-PCR detection in Malaysia
Generalized Mittag-Leffler Distributions and Processes for Applications in Astrophysics and Time Series Modeling
Geometric generalized Mittag-Leffler distributions having the Laplace
transform is
introduced and its properties are discussed. Autoregressive processes with
Mittag-Leffler and geometric generalized Mittag-Leffler marginal distributions
are developed. Haubold and Mathai (2000) derived a closed form representation
of the fractional kinetic equation and thermonuclear function in terms of
Mittag-Leffler function. Saxena et al (2002, 2004a,b) extended the result and
derived the solutions of a number of fractional kinetic equations in terms of
generalized Mittag-Leffler functions. These results are useful in explaining
various fundamental laws of physics. Here we develop first-order autoregressive
time series models and the properties are explored. The results have
applications in various areas like astrophysics, space sciences, meteorology,
