Efficiency in Marriage
Economists usually assume that bargaining in marriage leads to efficient outcomes. The most convincing rationale for this assumption is the belief that efficient allocations are likely to emerge from repeated interactions in stationary environments, and that marriage provides such an environment. This paper argues that when a current decision affects future bargaining power, inefficient outcomes are plausible. If the spouses could make binding commitments -- in effect, commitments to refrain from exploiting the future bargaining advantage -- then the inefficiency would disappear. But spouses seldom can make binding commitments regarding allocation within marriage. To investigate the efficiency of bargaining within marriage when choices affect future bargaining power, we consider the location decisions of two-earner couples. These location decisions are transparent and analytically tractable examples of choices likely to affect future bargaining power, but the logic of our analysis applies to many other decisions. For example, decisions about education, fertility, and labor force participation are also potential sources of inefficiency.
Molecular Dynamics Simulations of a Pressure-induced Glass Transition
We simulate the compression of a two-component Lennard-Jones liquid at a
variety of constant temperatures using a molecular dynamics algorithm in an
isobaric-isothermal ensemble. The viscosity of the liquid increases with
pressure, undergoing a broadened transition into a structurally arrested,
amorphous state. This transition, like the more familiar one induced by
cooling, is correlated with a significant increase in icosahedral ordering. In
fact, the structure of the final state, as measured by an analysis of the
bonding, is essentially the same in the glassy, frozen state whether produced
by squeezing or by cooling under pressure. We have computed an effective
hard-sphere packing fraction at the transition, defining the transition
pressure or temperature by a cutoff in the diffusion constant, analogous to the
traditional laboratory definition of the glass transition by an arbitrary, low
cutoff in viscosity. The packing fraction at this transition point is not
constant, but is consistently higher for runs compressed at higher temperature.
We show that this is because the transition point defined by a constant cutoff
in the diffusion constant is not the same as the point of structural arrest, at
which further changes in pressure induce no further structural changes, but
that the two alternate descriptions may be reconciled by using a thermally
activated cutoff for the diffusion constant. This enables estimation of the
characteristic activation energy for diffusion at the point of structural

Endogenous Wnt signalling in human embryonic stem cells generates an equilibrium of distinct lineage-specified progenitors.
The pluripotent nature of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) makes them convenient for deriving therapeutically relevant cells. Here we show using Wnt reporter hESC lines that the cells are heterogeneous with respect to endogenous Wnt signalling activity. Moreover, the level of Wnt signalling activity in individual cells correlates with differences in clonogenic potential and lineage-specific differentiation propensity. The addition of Wnt protein or, conversely, a small-molecule Wnt inhibitor (IWP2) reduces heterogeneity, allowing stable expansion of Wnt(high) or Wnt(low) hESC populations, respectively. On differentiation, the Wnt(high) hESCs predominantly form endodermal and cardiac cells, whereas the Wnt(low) hESCs generate primarily neuroectodermal cells. Thus, heterogeneity with respect to endogenous Wnt signalling underlies much of the inefficiency in directing hESCs towards specific cell types. The relatively uniform differentiation potential of the Wnt(high) and Wnt(low) hESCs leads to faster and more efficient derivation of targeted cell types from these populations

The BCS theory of q-deformed nucleon pairs - qBCS
We construct a coherent state of q-deformed zero coupled nucleon pairs
distributed in several single-particle orbits. Using a variational approach,
the set of equations of qBCS theory, to be solved self consistently for
occupation probabilities, gap parameter Delta, and the chemical potential
lambda, is obtained. Results for valence nucleons in nuclear degenerate sdg
major shell show that the strongly coupled zero angular momentum nucleon pairs
can be substituted by weakly coupled q-deformed zero angular momentum nucleon
pairs. A study of Sn isotopes reveals a well defined universe of (G, q) values,
for which qBCS converges. While the qBCS and BCS show similar results for Gap
parameter Delta in Sn isotopes, the ground state energies are lower in qBCS.

An Iterative and Toolchain-Based Approach to Automate Scanning and Mapping Computer Networks
As today's organizational computer networks are ever evolving and becoming
more and more complex, finding potential vulnerabilities and conducting
security audits has become a crucial element in securing these networks. The
first step in auditing a network is reconnaissance by mapping it to get a
comprehensive overview over its structure. The growing complexity, however,
makes this task increasingly effortful, even more as mapping (instead of plain
scanning), presently, still involves a lot of manual work. Therefore, the
concept proposed in this paper automates the scanning and mapping of unknown
and non-cooperative computer networks in order to find security weaknesses or
verify access controls. It further helps to conduct audits by allowing
comparing documented with actual networks and finding unauthorized network
devices, as well as evaluating access control methods by conducting delta
scans. It uses a novel approach of augmenting data from iteratively chained
existing scanning tools with context, using genuine analytics modules to allow
assessing a network's topology instead of just generating a list of scanned
devices. It further contains a visualization model that provides a clear, lucid
topology map and a special graph for comparative analysis. The goal is to

Reducing the rare event: lessons from the implementation of a ventilator bundle.
The ventilator-associated event (VAE) is a potentially avoidable complication of mechanical ventilation (MV) associated with poor outcomes. Although rare, VAEs and other nosocomial events are frequently targeted for quality improvement efforts consistent with the creed to 'do no harm'. In October 2016, VA Greater Los Angeles (GLA) was in the lowest-performing decile of VA medical centres on a composite measure of quality, owing to GLA's relatively high VAE rate. To decrease VAEs, we sought to reduce average MV duration of patients with acute respiratory failure to less than 3 days by 1 July 2017. In our first intervention (period 1), intensive care unit (ICU) attending physicians trained residents to use an existing ventilator bundle order set; in our second intervention (period 2), we updated the order set to streamline order entry and incorporate new nurse-driven and respiratory therapist (RT)-driven spontaneous awakening trial (SAT) and spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) protocols. In period 1, the proportion of eligible patients with SAT and SBT orders increased from 29.9% and 51.2% to 67.4% and 72.6%, respectively, with sustained improvements through December 2017. Mean MV duration decreased from 7.2 days at baseline to 5.5 days in period 1 and 4.7 days in period 2; statistical process control charts revealed no significant differences, but the difference between baseline and period 2 MV duration was statistically significant at p=0.049. Bedside audits showed RTs consistently performed indicated SBTs, but there were missed opportunities for SATs due to ICU staff concerns about the SAT protocol. The rarity of VAEs, small population of ventilated patients and infrequent use of sedative infusions at GLA may have decreased the opportunity to achieve staff acceptance and use of the SAT protocol. Quality improvement teams should consider frequency of targeted outcomes when planning interventions; rare events pose challenges in implementation and evaluation of change
Identification of HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor Active Compound in Medicinal Forest Plants
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, hypercholesterolemia is one of the causes. Three medicinal forest plants are potential natural resources to be developed as cholesterol-reducing herbal product, but scientific informations on their mechanism is still limited. The objective of this research is to explore the potency of the leaf of Jati Belanda (Guazuma ulmifolia), Jabon (Antocephalus macrophyllus), and Mindi (Melia azedarach) as inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase (HMGR), a key enzyme in the regulation of cholesterol biosynthesis. Samples were macerated in ethanol 96% and the filtrate was partitioned using n-hexane and chloroform to obtain the ethanolic flavonoid extract. The effect of each extracts on the HMG-CoA reductase activity were analyzed using HMGR assay kit. At concentration of 10 ppm the G.ulmifolia ethanolic extract showed the highest inhibitory activity as well as pravastatin control inhibitor. The phenolic content of the ethanolic extracts of G.ulmifolia, A.macrophyllus, and M.azedarach were: 11.00, 34.83, and 13.67 mg gallic acid AE/g dried leaves, respectively. The flavonoid content of the ethanolic extracts of G.ulmifolia, A.macrophyllus, and M.azedarach were: 0.22, 0.64, and 0.78 mg QE/g dried leaves, respectively. Interestingly, G.ulmifolia extract the lowest concentration of phenolic and flavonoid content. HPLC analysis showed that all samples contain quercetin at similiar small concentrations (6.7%, 6.6%, and 7.0% for G.ulmifolia, A.macrophyllus, and M.azedarach, respectively). This indicating other active compounds may play some roles in this inhibitory action on HMG-CoA reductase activity. Further identification using LC-MS/MS showed that G.ulmifolia flavonoid extract contained an unidetified coumpound with molecural weight of 380.0723 Da
