Selection of artichoke plants and analysis of correlation between quantitative traits for fresh consumption
The goals of the present study were to evaluate and select artichoke plants suitable for fresh consumption and to establish correlations between quantitative traits. Clones from 39 accessions were obtained from the germplasm collection of the University of Passo Fundo and evaluated for 17 quantitative and 3 qualitative traits. Data on quantitative traits were subjected to analysis of variance followed by a Tukey test at p<0.05 to compare averages, and correlations were analyzed using the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient. Significant differences were observed for 9 of the 17 quantitative traits analyzed, and 10 of the 39 accessions presented higher values for some of those traits than the remaining tested accessions. Significant correlations were observed between several traits and the capitulum yield, which makes indirect selection easier. For the qualitative traits, nine accessions were selected that presented circular head, violet colored bracts and absence of thorns, which are desirable traits for fresh consumption.Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron evaluar y seleccionar plantas de alcachofa aptas para consumo en fresco y establecer correlaciones entre caracteres cuantitativos. Treinta y nueve accesiones pertenecientes a la colección de germoplasma de la Universidad de Passo Fundo fueron clonadas y luego evaluadas para 17 caracteres cuantitativos y 3 cualitativos. Los datos correspondientes a los caracteres cuantitativos fueron sometidos a análisis de varianza seguido por una prueba comparación de valores medios de Tukey (p<0,05); las correlaciones fueron analizadas utilizando el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson. Se observaron diferencias significativas para 9 de los 17 caracteres cuantitativos analizados y 10 de las 39 accesiones mostraron elevados valores para algunos de esos caracteres. Se observaron valores significativos de correlación entre varios caracteres y el rendimiento, lo que facilita la selección indirecta. Considerando los caracteres cualitativos, se seleccionaron nueve accesiones por presentar capítulo esférico, brácteas violetas y ausencia de espinas, las cuales son características deseables para el consumo en fresco.Fil: Reolon Costa, A.. Quasi-elastic and inelastic inclusive electron scattering from an oxygen jet target
The results of an experiment on inclusive electron scattering from an oxygen
jet target, performed in a wide range of energy and momentum transfer covering
both quasi-elastic and (1232) resonance regions, are reported. In the
former region the theoretical predictions, obtained including effects of
nucleon-nucleon correlations in both initial and final states, give a good
description of the experimental data. In the inelastic region a broadening as
well as a damping of the resonant part of the cross section with respect to the
free nucleon case is observed. The need of more detailed calculations including
nuclear structure effects on the electroproduction cross section of nucleon

Performance of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the HERMES Experiment
The performance of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the HERMES experiment
is described. The calorimeter consists of 840 radiation resistant F101
lead-glass counters. The response to positrons up to 27.5 GeV, the comparison
between the measured energy and the momentum reconstructed from tracking,
long-term stability, hadron rejection and neutral meson invariant mass

Transverse-target-spin asymmetry in exclusive -meson electroproduction
Hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons is studied with the
HERMES spectrometer at the DESY laboratory by scattering 27.6 GeV positron and
electron beams off a transversely polarized hydrogen target. The amplitudes of
five azimuthal modulations of the single-spin asymmetry of the cross section
with respect to the transverse proton polarization are measured. They are
determined in the entire kinematic region as well as for two bins in photon
virtuality and momentum transfer to the nucleon. Also, a separation of
asymmetry amplitudes into longitudinal and transverse components is done. These
results are compared to a phenomenological model that includes the pion pole
contribution. Within this model, the data favor a positive

Bose-Einstein correlations in hadron-pairs from lepto-production on nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon
Bose-Einstein correlations of like-sign charged hadrons produced in
deep-inelastic electron and positron scattering are studied in the HERMES
experiment using nuclear targets of H, H, He, He, N, Ne, Kr,
and Xe. A Gaussian approach is used to parametrize a two-particle correlation
function determined from events with at least two charged hadrons of the same
sign charge. This correlation function is compared to two different empirical
distributions that do not include the Bose-Einstein correlations. One
distribution is derived from unlike-sign hadron pairs, and the second is
derived from mixing like-sign pairs from different events. The extraction
procedure used simulations incorporating the experimental setup in order to
correct the results for spectrometer acceptance effects, and was tested using
the distribution of unlike-sign hadron pairs. Clear signals of Bose-Einstein
correlations for all target nuclei without a significant variation with the
nuclear target mass are found. Also, no evidence for a dependence on the
invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system is found when the results are
compared to those of previous experiments
Nuclear Polarization of Molecular Hydrogen Recombined on a Non-metallic Surface
The nuclear polarization of molecules formed by recombination
of nuclear polarized H atoms on the surface of a storage cell initially coated
with a silicon-based polymer has been measured by using the longitudinal
double-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering. The
molecules are found to have a substantial nuclear polarization, which is
evidence that initially polarized atoms retain their nuclear polarization when
absorbed on this type of surfac
The Q^2-Dependence of Nuclear Transparency for Exclusive Production
Exclusive coherent and incoherent electroproduction of the meson
from H and N targets has been studied at the HERMES experiment as a
function of coherence length (), corresponding to the lifetime of hadronic
fluctuations of the virtual photon, and squared four-momentum of the virtual
photon (). The ratio of N to H cross sections per nucleon,
known as nuclear transparency, was found to increase (decrease) with increasing
coherence length for coherent (incoherent) electroproduction. For
fixed coherence length, a rise of nuclear transparency with is observed
for both coherent and incoherent production, which is in agreement
with theoretical calculations of color transparency.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Evidence for Quark-Hadron Duality in the Proton Spin Asymmetry
Spin-dependent lepton-nucleon scattering data have been used to investigate
the validity of the concept of quark-hadron duality for the spin asymmetry
. Longitudinally polarised positrons were scattered off a longitudinally
polarised hydrogen target for values of between 1.2 and 12 GeV and
values of between 1 and 4 GeV. The average double-spin asymmetry in
the nucleon resonance region is found to agree with that measured in
deep-inelastic scattering at the same values of the Bjorken scaling variable
. This finding implies that the description of in terms of quark
degrees of freedom is valid also in the nucleon resonance region for values of

Subleading-twist effects in single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target
Single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive production of charged pions in
deep-inelastic scattering from transversely and longitudinally polarized proton
targets are combined to evaluate the subleading-twist contribution to the
longitudinal case. This contribution is significantly positive for (\pi^+)
mesons and dominates the asymmetries on a longitudinally polarized target
previously measured by \hermes. The subleading-twist contribution for (\pi^-)
mesons is found to be small
