Understanding Heterogeneous EO Datasets: A Framework for Semantic Representations
Earth observation (EO) has become a valuable source of comprehensive, reliable, and persistent
information for a wide number of applications. However, dealing with the complexity of land cover is
sometimes difficult, as the variety of EO sensors reflects in the multitude of details recorded in several types
of image data. Their properties dictate the category and nature of the perceptible land structures. The data
heterogeneity hampers proper understanding, preventing the definition of universal procedures for content
exploitation. The main shortcomings are due to the different human and sensor perception on objects, as well
as to the lack of coincidence between visual elements and similarities obtained by computation. In order to
bridge these sensory and semantic gaps, the paper presents a compound framework for EO image information
extraction. The proposed approach acts like a common ground between the user's understanding, who is
visually shortsighted to the visible domain, and the machines numerical interpretation of a much wider
information. A hierarchical data representation is considered. At first, basic elements are automatically
computed. Then, users can enforce their judgement on the data processing results until semantic structures
are revealed. This procedure completes a user-machine knowledge transfer. The interaction is formalized as
a dialogue, where communication is determined by a set of parameters guiding the computational process
at each level of representation. The purpose is to maintain the data-driven observable connected to the level
of semantics and to human awareness. The proposed concept offers flexibility and interoperability to users,
allowing them to generate those results that best fit their application scenario. The experiments performed on
different satellite images demonstrate the ability to increase the performances in case of semantic annotation
by adjusting a set of parameters to the particularities of the analyzed data

The mutational landscape of <i>ARMC5 </i>in Primary Bilateral Macronodular Adrenal Hyperplasia:an update
BackgroundPrimary Bilateral Macronodular Adrenal Hyperplasia (PBMAH) is a rare cause of Cushing’s syndrome due to bilateral adrenocortical macronodules. Germline inactivating variants of the tumor suppressor gene ARMC5 are responsible for 20–25% of apparently sporadic PBMAH cases and 80% of familial presentations. ARMC5 screening is now routinely performed for PBMAH patients and families. Based on literature review and own observation, this study aims to give an overview of both published and unpublished ARMC5 genetic alterations and to compile the available evidence to discriminate pathogenic from benign variants.Results146 different germline variants (110 previously published and 36 novel) are identified, including 46% missense substitutions, 45% truncating variants, 3% affecting splice sites, 4% in-frame variants and 2% large deletions. In addition to the germline events, somatic 16p loss-of-heterozygosity and 104 different somatic events are described. The pathogenicity of ARMC5 variants is established on the basis of their frequency in the general population, in silico predictions, familial segregation and tumor DNA sequencing.ConclusionsThis is the first extensive review of ARMC5 pathogenic variants. It shows that they are spread on the whole coding sequence. This is a valuable resource for genetic investigations of PBMAH and will help the interpretation of new missense substitutions that are continuously identified.<br/
Monoamine Oxidases as Potential Contributors to Oxidative Stress in Diabetes: Time for a Study in Patients Undergoing Heart Surgery
Oxidative stress is a pathomechanism causally linked to the progression of chronic cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Mitochondria have emerged as the most relevant source of reactive oxygen species, the major culprit being classically considered the respiratory chain at the inner mitochondrial membrane. In the past decade, several experimental studies unequivocally demonstrated the contribution of monoamine oxidases (MAOs) at the outer mitochondrial membrane to the maladaptative ventricular hypertrophy and endothelial dysfunction. This paper addresses the contribution of mitochondrial dysfunction to the pathogenesis of heart failure and diabetes together with the mounting evidence for an emerging role of MAO inhibition as putative cardioprotective strategy in both conditions.</jats:p
