Why I became a chemistry teacher: identifying turning points in chemistry teacher narratives of their trajectories into teaching
BACKGROUND: Currently there are international concerns over teacher recruitment and attrition rates, especially in mathematics and the physical sciences. Much has been written about the recruitment of student teachers and the reasons people give for going into teaching, but little on the broader context of these people’s lives and the complex influences on their career decisions. PURPOSE: The narrative approach used in this study is a complement to larger scale quantitative studies into teacher recruitment as it seeks to consider the wider picture of a person’s life and, through a defended participant perspective, expose influences that may not have been obvious to the participants themselves. Sample: Eight current UK chemistry teachers. SAMPLE: Eight current UK chemistry teachers. DESIGN AND METHODS: Stories of becoming teachers are told through interviews and these narratives examined to consider the key influences upon their becoming chemistry teachers. Two analytic lenses were used: inductive thematic analysis and deductive analysis considering psychoanalytical defences. These lenses were used to both exemplify and challenge each other, providing triangulation of interpretation to determine participants’ trajectories into chemistry teaching. RESULTS: Family background and interest in, and utility of, studying chemistry were found to influence career life decisions. Some participants experienced moments where their career trajectory changed towards teaching whereas others followed a smooth path towards this end. For two, changes in their relationship with chemistry resulted in a teaching career. Particularly influential appears to be prior teaching experience which led to changes of trajectory for half of the participants in this study. CONCLUSION: The chemistry teachers’ relationship with the subject discipline and prior teaching experience were important in them entering the profession, whilst the influence of their own teachers is more nuanced than wider larger scale quantitative studies suggest. Findings suggest that increasing the opportunity for classroom experience for undergraduates may improve teacher recruitment
Continuation for thin film hydrodynamics and related scalar problems
This chapter illustrates how to apply continuation techniques in the analysis
of a particular class of nonlinear kinetic equations that describe the time
evolution through transport equations for a single scalar field like a
densities or interface profiles of various types. We first systematically
introduce these equations as gradient dynamics combining mass-conserving and
nonmass-conserving fluxes followed by a discussion of nonvariational amendmends
and a brief introduction to their analysis by numerical continuation. The
approach is first applied to a number of common examples of variational
equations, namely, Allen-Cahn- and Cahn-Hilliard-type equations including
certain thin-film equations for partially wetting liquids on homogeneous and
heterogeneous substrates as well as Swift-Hohenberg and Phase-Field-Crystal
equations. Second we consider nonvariational examples as the
Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, convective Allen-Cahn and Cahn-Hilliard
equations and thin-film equations describing stationary sliding drops and a
transversal front instability in a dip-coating. Through the different examples
we illustrate how to employ the numerical tools provided by the packages
auto07p and pde2path to determine steady, stationary and time-periodic
solutions in one and two dimensions and the resulting bifurcation diagrams. The
incorporation of boundary conditions and integral side conditions is also
discussed as well as problem-specific implementation issues

Abstract
Background The expansion of the novelty sweets market in the UK has major potential public health implications in children and young adults as they may cause dental erosion.
Objective To investigate the erosive potential of the novelty sweets in term of their physiochemical properties and amount of enamel loss.
Subjects and methods The pH of a variety of novelty sweets was tested in vitro using a pH meter and the neutralisable acidity was assessed by titrating the sweets against 0.1M NaOH. The viscosity of the novelty sweets was measured using a rotational viscometer. The wettability of enamel by each sweet was measured using dynamic contact angle analyser. Enamel loss was assessed using contact profilometry.
Results The pH ranged from 1.8–3.2, the neutralisable acidity ranged from 9–201 ml of 0.1 NaOH. The viscosity of the novelty sweets that come in liquid form ranged from 2–594 mPa s. The surface enamel erosion ranged from 1.95–15.77 μm and from 2.5–17.6 μm with and without immersing in saliva for 1 hour before immersing in acidic solution respectively. The amount of subsurface enamel loss was ranged from 0.75 to 2.3 μm following ultrasonication at 0 min of acidic attack and from 0.23 to 0.85 μm at 60 minutes of acidic attack while immersed in saliva. The contact angle between enamel surface and four sweet was less than the angle formed between the orange juice and the enamel which caused more wettability of enamel.
Conclusion The pH is lower than the critical value for enamel erosion (5.5), high neutralisable acidity and high sugar content strongly suggest that these sweets may cause significant amount of dental erosion clinically. In addition, the degree of wettability of enamel by solution is an important factor to consider in determining the enamel loss caused by acidic solution. Immediate tooth brushing would cause further enamel loss as a result of the mechanical removal of softened enamel. However, it has been suggested that postponing brushing after erosive attack should be reconsidered
Differences in Nutrient Requirements Imply a Non-Linear Emergence of Leaders in Animal Groups
Collective decision making and especially leadership in groups are among the most studied topics in natural, social, and political sciences. Previous studies have shown that some individuals are more likely to be leaders because of their social power or the pertinent information they possess. One challenge for all group members, however, is to satisfy their needs. In many situations, we do not yet know how individuals within groups distribute leadership decisions between themselves in order to satisfy time-varying individual requirements. To gain insight into this problem, we build a dynamic model where group members have to satisfy different needs but are not aware of each other's needs. Data about needs of animals come from real data observed in macaques. Several studies showed that a collective movement may be initiated by a single individual. This individual may be the dominant one, the oldest one, but also the one having the highest physiological needs. In our model, the individual with the lowest reserve initiates movements and decides for all its conspecifics. This simple rule leads to a viable decision-making system where all individuals may lead the group at one moment and thus suit their requirements. However, a single individual becomes the leader in 38% to 95% of cases and the leadership is unequally (according to an exponential law) distributed according to the heterogeneity of needs in the group. The results showed that this non-linearity emerges when one group member reaches physiological requirements, mainly the nutrient ones – protein, energy and water depending on weight - superior to those of its conspecifics. This amplification may explain why some leaders could appear in animal groups without any despotism, complex signalling, or developed cognitive ability
Distribution of Class 1 Integrons with IS26-Mediated Deletions in Their 3′-Conserved Segments in Escherichia coli of Human and Animal Origin
Class 1 integrons play a role in the emergence of multi-resistant bacteria by facilitating the recruitment of gene cassettes encoding antibiotic resistance genes. 512 E. coli strains sourced from humans (n = 202), animals (n = 304) and the environment (n = 6) were screened for the presence of the intI1 gene. In 31/79 integron positive E. coli strains, the gene cassette regions could not be PCR amplified using standard primers. DNA sequence analysis of 6 serologically diverse strains revealed atypical integrons harboured the dfrA5 cassette gene and only 24 bp of the integron 3′-conserved segment (CS) remained, due to the insertion of IS26. PCR targeting intI1 and IS26 followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis identified the integron-dfrA5-IS26 element in 27 E. coli strains of bovine origin and 4 strains of human origin. Southern hybridization and transformation studies revealed the integron-dfrA5-IS26 gene arrangement was either chromosomally located or plasmid borne. Plasmid location in 4/9 E. coli strains and PCR linkage of Tn21 transposition genes with the intI1 gene in 20/31 strains, suggests this element is readily disseminated by horizontal transfer
GFS, a preparation of Tasmanian Undaria pinnatifida is associated with healing and inhibition of reactivation of Herpes
BACKGROUND: We sought to assess whether GFS, a proprietary preparation of Tasmanian Undaria pinnatifida, has effects on healing or re-emergence of Herpetic infections, and additionally, to assess effects of GFS in vitro. Undaria is the most commonly eaten seaweed in Japan, and contains sulphated polyanions and other components with potential anti-viral activity. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infections have lower reactivation rates and Herpes type 2 (HSV-2) infections have lower incidence in Japan than in the west. METHODS: Patients with active (15 subjects) or latent (6 subjects) Herpetic infections (HSV-1, 2, EBV, Zoster) were monitored for response to ingestion of GFS. GFS extract was tested in vitro for human T cell mitogenicity and anti-Herpes activity. RESULTS: Ingestion of GFS was associated with increased healing rates in patients with active infections. In addition, patients with latent infection remained asymptomatic whilst ingesting GFS. GFS extract inhibited Herpes viruses in vitro and was mitogenic to human T cells in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: Ingestion of GFS has inhibitory effects on reactivation and is associated with increased rate of healing after Herpetic outbreaks. GFS extract potently inhibited Herpes virus in vitro, and had mitogenic effects on human T cells
Social dilemmas among unequals

interactions. It requires that interacting individuals are sufficiently equal, such that
everyone faces similar consequences when they cooperate or defect. Yet inequality is ubiquitous
among humansand is generally considered to undermine cooperation and welfar. Most previous models of reciprocity neglect inequality. They assume that
individuals are the same in all relevant aspects. Here we introduce a general framework
to study direct reciprocity among unequals. Our model allows for multiple sources of inequality.
Subjects can differ in their endowments, their productivities, and in how much
they benefit from public goods. We find that extreme inequality prevents cooperation. But
if subjects differ in productivity, some endowment inequality can be necessary for cooperation
to prevail. Our mathematical predictions are supported by a behavioral experiment
where we vary the subjects’ endowments and their productivities. We observe that overall
welfare is maximized when the two sources of heterogeneity are aligned, such that more
productive individuals receive higher endowments. In contrast, when endowments and
productivities are misaligned, cooperation quickly breaks down. Our findings have implications

Modelling Cell Polarization Driven by Synthetic Spatially Graded Rac Activation
The small GTPase Rac is known to be an important regulator of cell polarization, cytoskeletal reorganization, and motility of mammalian cells. In recent microfluidic experiments, HeLa cells endowed with appropriate constructs were subjected to gradients of the small molecule rapamycin leading to synthetic membrane recruitment of a Rac activator and direct graded activation of membrane-associated Rac. Rac activation could thus be triggered independent of upstream signaling mechanisms otherwise responsible for transducing activating gradient signals. The response of the cells to such stimulation depended on exceeding a threshold of activated Rac. Here we develop a minimal reaction-diffusion model for the GTPase network alone and for GTPase-phosphoinositide crosstalk that is consistent with experimental observations for the polarization of the cells. The modeling suggests that mutual inhibition is a more likely mode of cell polarization than positive feedback of Rac onto its own activation. We use a new analytical tool, Local Perturbation Analysis, to approximate the partial differential equations by ordinary differential equations for local and global variables. This method helps to analyze the parameter space and behaviour of the proposed models. The models and experiments suggest that (1) spatially uniform stimulation serves to sensitize a cell to applied gradients. (2) Feedback between phosphoinositides and Rho GTPases sensitizes a cell. (3) Cell lengthening/flattening accompanying polarization can increase the sensitivity of a cell and stabilize an otherwise unstable polarization
