    The adhesive fracture energy of structural adhesive joints may be readily ascertained from linear-elastic fracture-mechanics (LEFM) methods, and indeed an ISO Test Method (ISO 25217: 2009) now exists for the LEFM Mode I value, Gc, as a result of the efforts of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) ‘TC4 Committee’ [1,2]. These LEFM test methods involve the preparation and testing of adhesively-bonded double-cantilever beam (DCB) and tapered double-cantilever beam (TDCB) specimens [3,4]. Notwithstanding the sound and reproducible results that may be obtained from such methods, the LEFM test specimens are relatively complex and expensive to make and test, and many industries would far prefer to deduce the value of the adhesive fracture energy from the very common and widely-used ‘peel test’. (In the present paper, for clarity, the adhesive fracture energy is termed GA when deduced from a peel test.) Indeed, the peel test is an attractive test method to assess the fracture performance of a wide range of structural adhesive joints and flexible laminates.     Cryptographic primitives are essential for constructing privacy-preserving communication mechanisms. There are situations in which two parties that do not know each other need to exchange sensitive information on the Internet. Trust management mechanisms make use of digital credentials and certificates in order to establish trust among these strangers. We address the problem of choosing which credentials are exchanged. During this process, each party should learn no information about the preferences of the other party other than strictly required for trust establishment. We present a method to reach an agreement on the credentials to be exchanged that preserves the privacy of the parties. Our method is based on secure two-party computation protocols for set intersection.     Does a novel X-ray imaging technology provide a substantial radiation dose reduction for patients in trans-catheter aortic valve implantation procedures?

    Purpose: Modern interventional X-ray equipment employs image processing to permit reduction in radiation whilst retaining sufficient image quality. The aim of this study was to investigate whether our recently-installed system (AlluraClarity, Philips Healthcare) which contains advanced real-time image noise reduction algorithms and anatomy-specific X-ray optimization (beam filtering, grid switch, pulse width, spot size, detector and image processing engine), affected patient procedure dose and overall procedure duration in routine trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures. Methods: Patient dose for 42 TAVI patients from the AlluraClarity cardiac catheterisation lab and from a reference system (Axiom Artis, Siemens Healthcare) in the same cardiology department was recorded. Median values from the two X-ray systems were compared using the Wilcoxon statistical test. Results: Total patient procedure dose medians were 4016 and 7088 cGy cm2 from the AlluraClarity and reference systems respectively. AlluraClarity median patient doses were 3405 cGy cm2 and 783.5 cGy cm2 from fluoroscopy and digital image acquisition respectively. Reference median patient doses were 4928 cGy cm2 and 2511 cGy cm2 from fluoroscopy and digital image acquisition respectively. All differences in patient dose were significant at the 5% level. Median total fluoroscopy times [min:sec] were 19:57 and 20:20 for the AlluraClarity and reference systems respectively. Conclusion: The AlluraClarity cardiac catheterisation lab had 43% lower total patient procedure dose for TAVI patients than the reference lab; fluoroscopy and digital image acquisition doses were 31% and 69% lower respectively. In terms of total fluoroscopy time, there was no statistically significant difference between the two labs

    VIDA: a virus database system for the organization of animal virus genome open reading frames

    VIDA is a new virus database that organizes open reading frames (ORFs) from partial and complete genomic sequences from animal viruses. Currently VIDA includes all sequences from GenBank for Herpesviridae, Coronaviridae and Arteriviridae. The ORFs are organized into homologous protein families, which are identified on the basis of sequence similarity relationships, Conserved sequence regions of potential functional importance are identified and can be retrieved as sequence alignments. We use a controlled taxonomical and functional classification for all the proteins and protein families in the database. When available, protein structures that are related to the families have also been included.     Ramsey interference in a multilevel quantum system

    We report Ramsey interference in the excitonic population of a negatively charged quantum dot measured in resonant fluorescence. Our experiments show that the decay time of the Ramsey interference is limited by the spectral width of the transition. Applying a vertical magnetic field induces Zeeman split transitions that can be addressed by changing the laser detuning to reveal two-, three-, and four-level system behavior. We show that under finite field the phase-sensitive control of two optical pulses from a single laser can be used to prepare both population and spin states simultaneously. We also demonstrate the coherent optical manipulation of a trapped spin in a quantum dot in a Faraday geometry magnetic field

    YouTube as a source of information for patients considering surgery for ulcerative colitis

    © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Background With the range of health information online, assessing the resources that patients access may improve the content of preoperative information. Our aim was to assess the content of the most viewed videos on YouTube related to surgery for ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods YouTube was searched for videos containing information on surgery for UC. The 50 most viewed videos were identified and user interaction analyzed. Upload source was classified as patient, individual health care professional (HCP), or hospital/professional association. Video content was categorized using an inductive thematic analysis on a purposive sample list of videos. The overarching theme of each video was classified once data saturation was achieved. Results Thirty videos were uploaded by patients, 15 by hospitals and 5 by HCPs. Seventeen videos (34%) discussed life after surgery. Sixteen of these were uploaded by patients who had previously undergone surgery for UC. No videos of this theme were uploaded by HCPs. Ten videos (20%) described a number of different operations. Other themes identified were alternative health therapies (12%), colonoscopy (12%), life with UC (8%), miscellaneous (8%), and education for HCPs (6%). Patient uploaded videos had significantly more comments (P = 0.0079), with 28% of comments on patient videos being users requesting further information. Conclusions Understanding the sequelae of surgery is most important to preoperative patients. There are a lack of professional videos addressing this topic on YouTube. HCPs must participate in the production of videos and adapt preoperative consultations to address common preoperative concerns

    Emergent excitations in a geometrically frustrated magnet

    Frustrated systems are ubiquitous and interesting because their behavior is difficult to predict. Magnetism offers extreme examples in the form of spin lattices where all interactions between spins cannot be simultaneously satisfied. Such geometrical frustration leads to macroscopic degeneracies, and offers the possibility of qualitatively new states of matter whose nature has yet to be fully understood. Here we have discovered how novel composite spin degrees of freedom can emerge from frustrated interactions in the cubic spinel ZnCr2O4. Upon cooling, groups of six spins self-organize into weakly interacting antiferromagnetic loops whose directors, defined as the unique direction along which the spins are aligned parallel or antiparallel, govern all low temperature dynamics. The experimental evidence comes from a measurement of the magnetic form factor by inelastic neutron scattering. While the data bears no resemblance to the atomic form factor for chromium, they are perfectly consistent with the form factor for hexagonal spin loop directors. The hexagon directors are to a first approximation decoupled from each other and hence their reorientations embody the long-sought local zero energy modes for the pyrochlore lattice.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures upon reques
