Modulated Entanglement Evolution Via Correlated Noises
We study entanglement dynamics in the presence of correlated environmental
noises. Specifically, we investigate the quantum entanglement dynamics of two
spins in the presence of correlated classical white noises, deriving Markov
master equation and obtaining explicit solutions for several interesting
classes of initial states including Bell states and X form density matrices. We
show how entanglement can be enhanced or reduced by the correlation between the

Inhibition of SIRT1 Reactivates Silenced Cancer Genes without Loss of Promoter DNA Hypermethylation
The class III histone deactylase (HDAC), SIRT1, has cancer relevance because it regulates lifespan in multiple organisms, down-regulates p53 function through deacetylation, and is linked to polycomb gene silencing in Drosophila. However, it has not been reported to mediate heterochromatin formation or heritable silencing for endogenous mammalian genes. Herein, we show that SIRT1 localizes to promoters of several aberrantly silenced tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) in which 5′ CpG islands are densely hypermethylated, but not to these same promoters in cell lines in which the promoters are not hypermethylated and the genes are expressed. Heretofore, only type I and II HDACs, through deactylation of lysines 9 and 14 of histone H3 (H3-K9 and H3-K14, respectively), had been tied to the above TSG silencing. However, inhibition of these enzymes alone fails to re-activate the genes unless DNA methylation is first inhibited. In contrast, inhibition of SIRT1 by pharmacologic, dominant negative, and siRNA (small interfering RNA)–mediated inhibition in breast and colon cancer cells causes increased H4-K16 and H3-K9 acetylation at endogenous promoters and gene re-expression despite full retention of promoter DNA hypermethylation. Furthermore, SIRT1 inhibition affects key phenotypic aspects of cancer cells. We thus have identified a new component of epigenetic TSG silencing that may potentially link some epigenetic changes associated with aging with those found in cancer, and provide new directions for therapeutically targeting these important genes for re-expression
C-terminal amides mark proteins for degradation via SCF-FBXO31
During normal cellular homeostasis, unfolded and mislocalized proteins are recognized and removed, preventing the build-up of toxic byproducts. When protein homeostasis is perturbed during ageing, neurodegeneration or cellular stress, proteins can accumulate several forms of chemical damage through reactive metabolites. Such modifications have been proposed to trigger the selective removal of chemically marked proteins; however, identifying modifications that are sufficient to induce protein degradation has remained challenging. Here, using a semi-synthetic chemical biology approach coupled to cellular assays, we found that C-terminal amide-bearing proteins (CTAPs) are rapidly cleared from human cells. A CRISPR screen identified FBXO31 as a reader of C-terminal amides. FBXO31 is a substrate receptor for the SKP1-CUL1-F-box protein (SCF) ubiquitin ligase SCF-FBXO31, which ubiquitylates CTAPs for subsequent proteasomal degradation. A conserved binding pocket enables FBXO31 to bind to almost any C-terminal peptide bearing an amide while retaining exquisite selectivity over non-modified clients. This mechanism facilitates binding and turnover of endogenous CTAPs that are formed after oxidative stress. A dominant human mutation found in neurodevelopmental disorders reverses CTAP recognition, such that non-amidated neosubstrates are now degraded and FBXO31 becomes markedly toxic. We propose that CTAPs may represent the vanguard of a largely unexplored class of modified amino acid degrons that could provide a general strategy for selective yet broad surveillance of chemically damaged proteins

Successful radiation treatment of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma metastatic to the right cardiac atrium and ventricle in a pacemaker-dependent patient
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare, aggressive malignancy, which is known to metastasize to the heart. We report a case of a patient with ATC with metastatic involvement of the pacemaker leads within the right atrium and right ventricle. The patient survived external beam radiation treatment to his heart, with a radiographic response to treatment. Cardiac metastases are usually reported on autopsy; to our knowledge, this is the first report of the successful treatment of cardiac metastases encasing the leads of a pacemaker, and of cardiac metastases from ATCs, with a review of the pertinent literature

Inventários de fauna acessam diretamente a diversidade de uma localidade, em um determinado espaço e tempo. Os dados primários gerados pelos inventários compõem uma das ferramentas mais importantes na tomada de decisões a respeito do manejo de áreas naturais. Entretanto, vários problemas têm sido observados em diversos níveis relacionados aos inventários de fauna no Brasil e vão desde a formação de recursos humanos até a ausência de padronização, de desenho experimental e de seleção de métodos inadequados. São apresentados estudos de caso com mamíferos, répteis, anfíbios e peixes, nos quais são discutidos problemas como variabilidade temporal e métodos para detecção de fauna terrestre, sugerindo que tanto os inventários quanto os programas de monitoramento devam se estender por prazos maiores e que os inventários devem incluir diferentes metodologias para que os seus objetivos sejam plenamente alcançados.Inventories of fauna directly access the diversity of a locality in a certain period of time. The primary data generated by these inventories comprise one of the most important steps in decisions making regarding the management of natural areas. However, several problems have been observed at different levels related to inventories of fauna in Brazil, and range from the training of humans to the lack of standardization of experimental design and selection of inappropriate methods. We present case studies of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fishes, where they discussed issues such temporal variability and methods for detection of terrestrial fauna, suggesting that both inventories and monitoring programs should be extended for longer terms and that inventories should include different methodologies to ensure that their goals are fully achieved

Antibiotic Prescribing in Acute Wound Management
Aims
The primary aim is to ensure patients receive recommended acute wound care. Specific objectives include improving wound management, enhancing antimicrobial stewardship, and aligning practices with national guidelines.
Methods
A retrospective audit spanning May to October 2023 assessed prescriptions for in-patients receiving antibiotics for wound management. Detailed patient records were scrutinized to evaluate compliance with standards, including wound assessment documentation, antibiotic indication adherence, tetanus status recording, and wound swab collection.
Results
A total of 21 patients/encounters met the criteria for inclusion. Documentation deficiencies were prevalent, with only 61.9% of prescriptions featuring complete wound assessments. Additionally, antibiotic indications met NICE criteria in only 42.8% of cases, while tetanus status documentation was absent across all records. Despite 76% receiving first-line antibiotics, only 19% had wound swabs collected.
Conclusion
Self-harm rates in the United Kingdom, particularly among those with mental health disorders, are alarming. Hospitalizations are often required to address acute self-inflicted wounds, yet in-patient settings present unique challenges exacerbating self-harming tendencies.
This audit underscores the imperative of optimizing acute wound management in in-patient settings. By implementing evidence-based practices and addressing identified deficiencies, healthcare providers can enhance patient outcomes and ensure optimal care delivery
Non-destructive measurement of orthotropic elastic properties of wood samples by their modal impulse response
International audienceWood represents a major class of versatile materials in mechanics, comparable to metals onvarious criteria such as annual world production tonnage. The density of wood is 3 to 15 timeslower than that of metals, due to its cellular structure, whose walls are essentially made up oflayers of long-fiber nano-composites. This makes wood one of the most efficient materials formany applications. However, the knowledge of the transverse (ER radial modulus and ETtangential modulus) and shear (GRT, GLT and GLR) elastic properties of this orthotropic,heterogeneous, hygroscopic and variable material are still limited due to a lack of rapid andefficient characterization tools and methods. Currently, the existing technical data in databasesare incomplete for material selection since, generally, only the longitudinal elastic modulus isavailable, whereas the other elastic properties are essential for high-end and high-performanceapplications.The aims of this study are: to rapidly estimate as many elastic parameters as possible from asingle wood sample using the modal analysis of its vibrational impulse response; to investigatethe damping characteristics and relate them to viscous behaviour; to enrich the woods databasewith orthotropic elastic constants; and to analyze the correlations between macroscopicviscoelastic behavior and ultrastructural parameters, including density and microfibril angle (AlFay et al. 2022)
