Jet production in charged current deep inelastic e⁺p scatteringat HERA
The production rates and substructure of jets have been studied in charged current deep inelastic e⁺p scattering for Q² > 200 GeV² with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 110.5 pb⁻¹. Inclusive jet cross sections are presented for jets with transverse energies E_{T}^{jet} > 5 GeV. Measurements of the mean subjet multiplicity, 〈n_{sbj}〉, of the inclusive jet sample are presented. Predictions based on parton-shower Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are compared to the measurements. The value of α_{s} (M_{z}), determined from 〈n_{sbj}〉 at y_{cut} = 10⁻² for jets with 25 < E_{T}^{jet} < 119 GeV, is α_{s} (M_{z}) = 0.1202 ± 0.0052 (stat.)_{-0.0019}^{+0.0060} (syst.)_{-0.0053}^{+0.0065} (th.). The mean subjet multiplicity as a function of Q² is found to be consistent with that measured in NC DIS
Singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories
We study the singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories
at zero temperature. The Dirac singular values are real and nonnegative at any
nonzero quark density. The scale of their spectrum is set by the diquark
condensate, in contrast to the complex Dirac eigenvalues whose scale is set by
the chiral condensate at low density and by the BCS gap at high density. We
identify three different low-energy effective theories with diquark sources
applicable at low, intermediate, and high density, together with their
overlapping domains of validity. We derive a number of exact formulas for the
Dirac singular values, including Banks-Casher-type relations for the diquark
condensate, Smilga-Stern-type relations for the slope of the singular value
density, and Leutwyler-Smilga-type sum rules for the inverse singular values.
We construct random matrix theories and determine the form of the microscopic
spectral correlation functions of the singular values for all nonzero quark
densities. We also derive a rigorous index theorem for non-Hermitian Dirac
operators. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice simulations.Comment: 3 references added, version published in JHE
Multijet production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at HERA and determination of α_{s}
Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities 10 5 GeV and –1 < η_{LAB}^{jet} < 2.5. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant α_{s} (M_{z}), determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections, is α_{s} (M_{z}) = 0.1179 ± 0.0013 (stat.)_{-0.0046}^{+0.0028}(exp.)_{-0.0046}^{+0.0028}(th.)
The dependence of dijet production on photon virtuality in ep collisions at HERA
The dependence of dijet production on the virtuality of the exchanged photon,
Q^2, has been studied by measuring dijet cross sections in the range 0 < Q^2 <
2000 GeV^2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of
38.6 pb^-1.
Dijet cross sections were measured for jets with transverse energy E_T^jet >
7.5 and 6.5 GeV and pseudorapidities in the photon-proton centre-of-mass frame
in the range -3 < eta^jet <0. The variable xg^obs, a measure of the photon
momentum entering the hard process, was used to enhance the sensitivity of the
measurement to the photon structure. The Q^2 dependence of the ratio of low- to
high-xg^obs events was measured.
Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions were found to generally underestimate
the low-xg^obs contribution relative to that at high xg^obs. Monte Carlo models
based on leading-logarithmic parton-showers, using a partonic structure for the
photon which falls smoothly with increasing Q^2, provide a qualitative

Vascular risk and genetics of sporadic late-onset Alzheimer's disease.
In recent years, it is becoming apparent that genes may play an important role in the development of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD), and genetic studies could unravel new clues. Based on a growing vascular hypothesis for the pathogenesis of LOAD and other dementias, there is increasing interest for environmental and genetic vascular factors. Polymorphisms in different susceptibility genes already implicated in vascular disease risk are now also being suggested as possible genetic markers for increased risk of developing LOAD; however, many of these studies have shown conflicting results. Thus far, the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene seems to be the only vascular susceptibility factor that is agreed to play a role in the multifactorial pathogenesis of AD although emerging genetic and biological evidence is now strengthening the case for additional inclusion of angiotensin I-converting enzyme 1 (ACE1) into this category. This review will focus on the current knowledge on genetic and nongenetic vascular factors likely to be involved in LOAD, with special emphasis placed on the APOE and ACE1 genes
Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Search for Charged Higgs Bosons in e+e- Collisions at \sqrt{s} = 189 GeV
A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3
detector at LEP using data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 188.6 GeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176.4 pb^-1. Higgs decays into a
charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its associated neutrino are
considered. The observed events are consistent with the expectations from
Standard Model background processes. A lower limit of 65.5 GeV on the charged
Higgs mass is derived at 95 % confidence level, independent of the decay
branching ratio Br(H^{+/-} -> tau nu)
Apolipoprotein E (APOE) polymorphism influences serum APOE levels in Alzheimer's disease patients and centenarians.
Vascular factors may play a role in the etiology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and increased serum apolipoprotein E (APOE) levels in AD could be of interest, as APOE concentration is associated with vascular disease. Aims of this study were to evaluate the inluence of APOE genotype on serum APOE levels, and, secondly, to study serum APOE concentrations in relation to age and AD. APOE genotypes, serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio, triglycerides, and serum APOE were performed on 52 healthy centenarians, 49 AD patients, 45 age-matched controls, and 72 young healthy adults. In all study population a significant trend in reduction of serum APOE levels from APOE E2- to E4 carriers was observed.The diffeerence in serumAPOE levels amonga ge groups signi¢cantly decreased in E4 carriers only, includingH DL cholesterol; no significant differences between AD patients and age-matched controls were found. In these highly selected populations, APOE genotype distribution
strongly influences serum APOE concentration, not suggesting, at present, a possible role as a biochemical marker for AD, but only as a putative longevity factor
Domestic horses (Equus caballus) discriminate between negative and positive human nonverbal vocalisations
The ability to discriminate between emotion in vocal signals is highly adaptive in social species. It may also be adaptive for domestic species to distinguish such signals in humans. Here we present a playback study investigating whether horses spontaneously respond in a functionally relevant way towards positive and negative emotion in human nonverbal vocalisations. We presented horses with positively- and negatively-valenced human vocalisations (laughter and growling, respectively) in the absence of all other emotional cues. Horses were found to adopt a freeze posture for significantly longer immediately after hearing negative versus positive human vocalisations, suggesting that negative voices promote vigilance behaviours and may therefore be perceived as more threatening. In support of this interpretation, horses held their ears forwards for longer and performed fewer ear movements in response to negative voices, which further suggest increased vigilance. In addition, horses showed a right-ear/left-hemisphere bias when attending to positive compared with negative voices, suggesting that horses perceive laughter as more positive than growling. These findings raise interesting questions about the potential for universal discrimination of vocal affect and the role of lifetime learning versus other factors in interspecific communication
