Scheduling MapReduce Jobs under Multi-Round Precedences
We consider non-preemptive scheduling of MapReduce jobs with multiple tasks
in the practical scenario where each job requires several map-reduce rounds. We
seek to minimize the average weighted completion time and consider scheduling
on identical and unrelated parallel processors. For identical processors, we
present LP-based O(1)-approximation algorithms. For unrelated processors, the
approximation ratio naturally depends on the maximum number of rounds of any
job. Since the number of rounds per job in typical MapReduce algorithms is a
small constant, our scheduling algorithms achieve a small approximation ratio
in practice. For the single-round case, we substantially improve on previously
best known approximation guarantees for both identical and unrelated
processors. Moreover, we conduct an experimental analysis and compare the
performance of our algorithms against a fast heuristic and a lower bound on the
optimal solution, thus demonstrating their promising practical performance

Location: The upper forest limit in Manu National Park, Peru.
Methods: A randomized stratified design provided 21 soil profiles from forested sites just below the timberline, 15 from puna grassland sites just above the timberline and 15 from the transitional habitat at the puna–forest boundary. From each profile a surface sample (hereafter modern) and a sample from the base of the organic horizon (hereafter historical) were collected. Pollen and charcoal were analysed from the modern and historical layers of the 51 soil profiles. A chronological framework was provided by 24 14C dates. Data were ordinated as modern and historical groups and the temporal trends illustrated by Procrustes rotation.
Results: The organic layer from the soil profiles represented the last 600–2000 years. Fire was much more abundant in all habitat types (puna, transitional and forested) in the modern compared with the historical groups. Samples that had historically been in puna just above the timberline showed encroachment by woody species. Samples that had been forested were still classified as forest but their composition had become more transitional. Sites that were transitional appeared to represent a new or expanded class of sites that was far less abundant historically.
Main conclusions: Our results are consistent with ongoing warming causing an upslope migration of species, although not necessarily of the timberline. Weedy fire-tolerant species are spreading upslope, creating a transitional forest, softening the boundary between forest and puna. Simultaneously, fire introduced to improve grazing outside the park has increasingly penetrated the forest and is causing the upper timberline to shift towards more fire-tolerant and weedy species. The quark anti-quark potential and the cusp anomalous dimension from a TBA equation
We derive a set of integral equations of the TBA type for the generalized
cusp anomalous dimension, or the quark antiquark potential on the three sphere,
as a function of the angles. We do this by considering a family of local
operators on a Wilson loop with charge L. In the large L limit the problem can
be solved in terms of a certain boundary reflection matrix. We determine this
reflection matrix by using the symmetries and the boundary crossing equation.
The cusp is introduced through a relative rotation between the two boundaries.
Then the TBA trick of exchanging space and time leads to an exact equation for
all values of L. The L=0 case corresponds to the cusped Wilson loop with no
operators inserted. We then derive a slightly simplified integral equation
which describes the small angle limit. We solve this equation up to three loops
in perturbation theory and match the results that were obtained with more

An exact formula for the radiation of a moving quark in N=4 super Yang Mills
We derive an exact formula for the cusp anomalous dimension at small angles.
This is done by relating the latter to the computation of certain 1/8 BPS
Wilson loops which was performed by supersymmetric localization. This function
of the coupling also determines the power emitted by a moving quark in N=4
super Yang Mills, as well as the coefficient of the two point function of the
displacement operator on the Wilson loop. By a similar method we compute the

The cusp anomalous dimension at three loops and beyond
We derive an analytic formula at three loops for the cusp anomalous dimension
Gamma_cusp(phi) in N=4 super Yang-Mills. This is done by exploiting the
relation of the latter to the Regge limit of massive amplitudes. We comment on
the corresponding three loops quark anti-quark potential. Our result also
determines a considerable part of the three-loop cusp anomalous dimension in
QCD. Finally, we consider a limit in which only ladder diagrams contribute to
physical observables. In that limit, a precise agreement with strong coupling

Transcriptome profiling of grapevine seedless segregants during berry development reveals candidate genes associated with berry weight

Berry size is considered as one of the main selection criteria in table grape breeding programs. However, this is a quantitative and polygenic trait, and its genetic determination is still poorly understood. Considering its economic importance, it is relevant to determine its genetic architecture and elucidate the mechanisms involved in its expression. To approach this issue, an RNA-Seq experiment based on Illumina platform was performed (14 libraries), including seedless segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight at fruit setting (FST) and 6–8 mm berries (B68) phenological stages.
Results
A group of 526 differentially expressed (DE) genes were identified, by comparing seedless segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight: 101 genes from the FST stage and 463 from the B68 stage. Also, we integrated differential expression, principal components analysis (PCA), correlations and network co-expression analyses to characterize the transcriptome profiling observed in segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight. After this, 68 DE genes were selected as candidate genes, and seven candidate genes were validated by real time-PCR, confirming their expression profiles.
Conclusions
We have carried out the first transcriptome analysis focused on table grape seedless segregants with contrasting phenotypes for berry weight. Our findings contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms involved in berry weight determination. Also, this comparative transcriptome profiling revealed candidate genes for berry weight which could be evaluated as selection tools in table grape breeding programs.http://bmcplantbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12870-016-0789-
A new method to quantify and compare the multiple components of fitness-A study case with kelp niche partition by divergent microstage adaptations to Temperature
Point 1 Management of crops, commercialized or protected species, plagues or life-cycle evolution are subjects requiring comparisons among different demographic strategies. The simpler methods fail in relating changes in vital rates with changes in population viability whereas more complex methods lack accuracy by neglecting interactions among vital rates. Point 2 The difference between the fitness (evaluated by the population growth rate.) of two alternative demographies is decomposed into the contributions of the differences between the pair-wised vital rates and their interactions. This is achieved through a full Taylor expansion (i.e. remainder = 0) of the demographic model. The significance of each term is determined by permutation tests under the null hypothesis that all demographies come from the same pool. Point 3 An example is given with periodic demographic matrices of the microscopic haploid phase of two kelp cryptic species observed to partition their niche occupation along the Chilean coast. The method provided clear and synthetic results showing conditional differentiation of reproduction is an important driver for their differences in fitness along the latitudinal temperature gradient. But it also demonstrated that interactions among vital rates cannot be neglected as they compose a significant part of the differences between demographies. Wide spectrum of NR5A1-related phenotypes in 46,XY and 46,XX individuals
Steroidogenic factor 1 (NR5A1, SF-1, Ad4BP) is a transcriptional regulator of genes involved in adrenal and gonadal development and function. Mutations in NR5A1 have been among the most frequently identified genetic causes of gonadal development disorders and are associated with a wide phenotypic spectrum. In 46,XY individuals, NR5A1-related phenotypes may range from disorders of sex development (DSD) to oligo/azoospermia, and in 46,XX individuals, from 46,XX ovotesticular and testicular DSD to primary ovarian insufficiency (POI). The most common 46,XY phenotype is atypical or female external genitalia with clitoromegaly, palpable gonads, and absence of Müllerian derivatives. Notably, an undervirilized external genitalia is frequently seen at birth, while spontaneous virilization may occur later, at puberty. In 46,XX individuals, NR5A1 mutations are a rare genetic cause of POI, manifesting as primary or secondary amenorrhea, infertility, hypoestrogenism, and elevated gonadotropin levels. Mothers and sisters of 46,XY DSD patients carrying heterozygous NR5A1 mutations may develop POI, and therefore require appropriate counseling. Moreover, the recurrent heterozygous p.Arg92Trp NR5A1 mutation is associated with variable degrees of testis development in 46,XX patients. A clear genotype-phenotype correlation is not seen in patients bearing NR5A1 mutations, suggesting that genetic modifiers, such as pathogenic variants in other testis/ovarian-determining genes, may contribute to the phenotypic expression. Here, we review the published literature on NR5A1-related disease, and discuss our findings at a single tertiary center in Brazil, including ten novel NR5A1 mutations identified in 46,XY DSD patients. The ever-expanding phenotypic range associated with NR5A1 variants in XY and XX individuals confirms its pivotal role in reproductive biology, and should alert clinicians to the possibility of NR5A1 defects in a variety of phenotypes presenting with gonadal dysfunction
The generalized cusp in ABJ(M) N = 6 Super Chern-Simons theories
We construct a generalized cusped Wilson loop operator in N = 6 super
Chern-Simons-matter theories which is locally invariant under half of the
supercharges. It depends on two parameters and interpolates smoothly between
the 1/2 BPS line or circle and a pair of antiparallel lines, representing a
natural generalization of the quark-antiquark potential in ABJ(M) theories. For
particular choices of the parameters we obtain 1/6 BPS configurations that,
mapped on S^2 by a conformal transformation, realize a three-dimensional
analogue of the wedge DGRT Wilson loop of N = 4. The cusp couples, in addition
to the gauge and scalar fields of the theory, also to the fermions in the
bifundamental representation of the U(N)xU(M) gauge group and its expectation
value is expressed as the holonomy of a suitable superconnection. We discuss
the definition of these observables in terms of traces and the role of the
boundary conditions of fermions along the loop. We perform a complete two-loop
analysis, obtaining an explicit result for the generalized cusp at the second
non-trivial order, from which we read off the interaction potential between
heavy 1/2 BPS particles in the ABJ(M) model. Our results open the possibility
to explore in the three-dimensional case the connection between localization

Effect of maternal Schistosoma mansoni infection and praziquantel treatment during pregnancy on Schistosoma mansoni infection and immune responsiveness among offspring at age five years.
INTRODUCTION: Offspring of Schistosoma mansoni-infected women in schistosomiasis-endemic areas may be sensitised in-utero. This may influence their immune responsiveness to schistosome infection and schistosomiasis-associated morbidity. Effects of praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni during pregnancy on risk of S. mansoni infection among offspring, and on their immune responsiveness when they become exposed to S. mansoni, are unknown. Here we examined effects of praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni during pregnancy on prevalence of S. mansoni and immune responsiveness among offspring at age five years. METHODS: In a trial in Uganda (ISRCTN32849447, http://www.controlled-trials.com/ISRCTN32849447/elliott), offspring of women treated with praziquantel or placebo during pregnancy were examined for S. mansoni infection and for cytokine and antibody responses to SWA and SEA, as well as for T cell expression of FoxP3, at age five years. RESULTS: Of the 1343 children examined, 32 (2.4%) had S. mansoni infection at age five years based on a single stool sample. Infection prevalence did not differ between children of treated or untreated mothers. Cytokine (IFNγ, IL-5, IL-10 and IL-13) and antibody (IgG1, Ig4 and IgE) responses to SWA and SEA, and FoxP3 expression, were higher among infected than uninfected children. Praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni during pregnancy had no effect on immune responses, with the exception of IL-10 responses to SWA, which was higher in offspring of women that received praziquantel during pregnancy than those who did not. CONCLUSION: We found no evidence that maternal S. mansoni infection and its treatment during pregnancy influence prevalence and intensity of S. mansoni infection or effector immune response to S. mansoni infection among offspring at age five years, but the observed effects on IL-10 responses to SWA suggest that maternal S. mansoni and its treatment during pregnancy may affect immunoregulatory responsiveness in childhood schistosomiasis.
