A common complaint of Canadian urban historians is that a general, comparative history of urban development in Canada is next to impossible since so few studies of individual towns and cities have been completed. Fortunately, this situation is changing since this study of the development of the Swift Current region is only one of several such studies completed and published in recent years. </jats:p

This booklet, produced under the auspices of the Canadian National Committee for Habitat, suggests more than 200 potentially valuable solutions to issues facing Canadian communities from coast to coast. The Sampler is organized into three main sections: "Planning Ahead", "Bettering the Built World", and "Social Interchange", Innovations in land use, transportation, environment protection and public participation as well as housing, utilizing public spaces, health care delivery, and creation of employment and learning opportunities are described. The individual articles provide wide-ranging and practical suggestions for improving the quality of the living environment.
