Mass of the B_c Meson in Three-Flavor Lattice QCD
We use lattice QCD to predict the mass of the meson. We use the MILC
Collaboration's ensembles of lattice gauge fields, which have a quark sea with
two flavors much lighter than a third. Our final result is

Predictions from Lattice QCD
In the past year, we calculated with lattice QCD three quantities that were
unknown or poorly known. They are the dependence of the form factor in
semileptonic decay, the decay constant of the meson, and the
mass of the meson. In this talk, we summarize these calculations, with

Covariant derivative of the curvature tensor of pseudo-K\"ahlerian manifolds
It is well known that the curvature tensor of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold
can be decomposed with respect to the pseudo-orthogonal group into the sum of
the Weyl conformal curvature tensor, the traceless part of the Ricci tensor and
of the scalar curvature. A similar decomposition with respect to the
pseudo-unitary group exists on a pseudo-K\"ahlerian manifold; instead of the
Weyl tensor one obtains the Bochner tensor. In the present paper, the known
decomposition with respect to the pseudo-orthogonal group of the covariant
derivative of the curvature tensor of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold is refined.
A decomposition with respect to the pseudo-unitary group of the covariant
derivative of the curvature tensor for pseudo-K\"ahlerian manifolds is
obtained. This defines natural classes of spaces generalizing locally symmetric
spaces and Einstein spaces. It is shown that the values of the covariant
derivative of the curvature tensor for a non-locally symmetric
pseudo-Riemannian manifold with an irreducible connected holonomy group
different from the pseudo-orthogonal and pseudo-unitary groups belong to an

The longer your work hours, the worse your relationship? The role of selective optimization with compensation in the associations of working time with relationship satisfaction and self-disclosure in dual-career couples
This two-wave panel study investigates the associations between working time, selective optimization with compensation in private life and relationship outcomes (i.e. relationship satisfaction and self-disclosure) in dual-career couples. We propose that one partner’s selective optimization with compensation in private life either mediates or moderates the association of this partner’s working time and relationship outcomes (i.e. relationship satisfaction and self-disclosure). Moreover, we postulate the crossover (i.e. transmission) of relationship satisfaction and self-disclosure within the couple. To test these hypotheses, we conducted an online study with a time lag of six months, in which 285 dual-career couples took part. We found evidence for selective optimization with compensation in private life as a mediator: working time spent by partners in dual-career couples was associated with selective optimization with compensation in their private life that, in turn, predicted relationship satisfaction and self-disclosure. Results did not support the assumption that one partner’s selective optimization with compensation in private life moderates the association between working time and relationship satisfaction and self-disclosure. Relationship satisfaction, but not self-disclosure, crossed over within the couples. The results challenge the assumption that longer work hours have negative consequences for romantic relationships
Evolution of spiral and scroll waves of excitation in a mathematical model of ischaemic border zone
Abnormal electrical activity from the boundaries of ischemic cardiac tissue
is recognized as one of the major causes in generation of ischemia-reperfusion
arrhythmias. Here we present theoretical analysis of the waves of electrical
activity that can rise on the boundary of cardiac cell network upon its
recovery from ischaemia-like conditions. The main factors included in our
analysis are macroscopic gradients of the cell-to-cell coupling and cell
excitability and microscopic heterogeneity of individual cells. The interplay
between these factors allows one to explain how spirals form, drift together
with the moving boundary, get transiently pinned to local inhomogeneities, and
finally penetrate into the bulk of the well-coupled tissue where they reach
macroscopic scale. The asymptotic theory of the drift of spiral and scroll
waves based on response functions provides explanation of the drifts involved
in this mechanism, with the exception of effects due to the discreteness of
cardiac tissue. In particular, this asymptotic theory allows an extrapolation
of 2D events into 3D, which has shown that cells within the border zone can
give rise to 3D analogues of spirals, the scroll waves. When and if such scroll
waves escape into a better coupled tissue, they are likely to collapse due to
the positive filament tension. However, our simulations have shown that such
collapse of newly generated scrolls is not inevitable and that under certain
conditions filament tension becomes negative, leading to scroll filaments to
expand and multiply leading to a fibrillation-like state within small areas of

Circulating Progenitor Cells Identify Peripheral Arterial Disease in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease
RATIONALE: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a clinical manifestation of extracoronary atherosclerosis. Despite sharing the same risk factors, only 20% to 30% of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) develop PAD. Decline in the number of bone marrow–derived circulating progenitor cells (PCs) is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Whether specific changes in PCs differentiate patients with both PAD and CAD from those with CAD alone is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: Determine whether differences exist in PCs counts of CAD patients with and without known PAD.
METHODS AND RESULTS: 1497 patients (mean age: 65 years; 62% men) with known CAD were identified in the Emory Cardiovascular Biobank. Presence of PAD (n=308) was determined by history, review of medical records, or imaging and was classified as carotid (53%), lower extremity (41%), upper extremity (3%), and aortic disease (33%). Circulating PCs were enumerated by flow cytometry. Patients with CAD and PAD had significantly lower PC counts compared with those with only CAD. In multivariable analysis, a 50% decrease in cluster of differentiation 34 (CD34+) or CD34+/vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2+) counts was associated with a 31% (P=0.032) and 183% (P=0.002) increase in the odds of having PAD, respectively. CD34+ and CD34+/VEGFR2+ counts significantly improved risk prediction metrics for prevalent PAD. Low CD34+/VEGFR2+ counts were associated with a 1.40-fold (95% confidence interval, 1.03–1.91) and a 1.64-fold (95% confidence interval, 1.07–2.50) increases in the risk of mortality and PAD-related events, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: PAD is associated with low CD34+ and CD34+/VEGFR2+ PC counts. Whether low PC counts are useful in screening for PAD needs to be investigated
Off-Diagonal Deformations of Kerr Metrics and Black Ellipsoids in Heterotic Supergravity
Geometric methods for constructing exact solutions of motion equations with
first order corrections to the heterotic supergravity action
implying a non-trivial Yang-Mills sector and six dimensional, 6-d,
almost-K\"ahler internal spaces are studied. In 10-d spacetimes, general
parametrizations for generic off-diagonal metrics, nonlinear and linear
connections and matter sources, when the equations of motion decouple in very
general forms are considered. This allows us to construct a variety of exact
solutions when the coefficients of fundamental geometric/physical objects
depend on all higher dimensional spacetime coordinates via corresponding
classes of generating and integration functions, generalized effective sources
and integration constants. Such generalized solutions are determined by generic
off-diagonal metrics and nonlinear and/or linear connections. In particular, as
configurations which are warped/compactified to lower dimensions and for
Levi-Civita connections. The corresponding metrics can have (non) Killing
and/or Lie algebra symmetries and/or describe (1+2)-d and/or (1+3)-d domain
wall configurations, with possible warping nearly almost-K\"ahler manifolds,
with gravitational and gauge instantons for nonlinear vacuum configurations and
effective polarizations of cosmological and interaction constants encoding
string gravity effects. A series of examples of exact solutions describing
generic off-diagonal supergravity modifications to black hole/ ellipsoid and
solitonic configurations are provided and analyzed. We prove that it is
possible to reproduce the Kerr and other type black solutions in general
relativity (with certain types of string corrections) in 4-d and to generalize

The association of health literacy with adherence in older 2 adults, and its role in interventions: a systematic meta-review
Background: Low health literacy is a common problem among older adults. It is often suggested to be associated with poor adherence. This suggested association implies a need for effective adherence interventions in low health literate people. However, previous reviews show mixed results on the association between low health literacy and poor adherence. A systematic meta-review of systematic reviews was conducted to study the association between health literacy and adherence in adults above the age of 50. Evidence for the effectiveness of adherence interventions among adults in this older age group with low health literacy was also explored. Methods: Eight electronic databases (MEDLINE, ERIC, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, DARE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Knowledge) were searched using a variety of keywords regarding health literacy and adherence. Additionally, references of identified articles were checked. Systematic reviews were included if they assessed the association between health literacy and adherence or evaluated the effectiveness of interventions to improve adherence in adults with low health literacy. The AMSTAR tool was used to assess the quality of the included reviews. The selection procedure, data-extraction, and quality assessment were performed by two independent reviewers. Seventeen reviews were selected for inclusion. Results: Reviews varied widely in quality. Both reviews of high and low quality found only weak or mixed associations between health literacy and adherence among older adults. Reviews report on seven studies that assess the effectiveness of adherence interventions among low health literate older adults. The results suggest that some adherence interventions are effective for this group. The interventions described in the reviews focused mainly on education and on lowering the health literacy demands of adherence instructions. No conclusions could be drawn about which type of intervention could be most beneficial for this population. Conclusions: Evidence on the association between health literacy and adherence in older adults is relatively weak. Adherence interventions are potentially effective for the vulnerable population of older adults with low levels of health literacy, but the evidence on this topic is limited. Further research is needed on the association between health literacy and general health behavior, and on the effectiveness of interventions
Inferring stabilizing mutations from protein phylogenies : application to influenza hemagglutinin
One selection pressure shaping sequence evolution is the requirement that a protein fold with sufficient stability to perform its biological functions. We present a conceptual framework that explains how this requirement causes the probability that a particular amino acid mutation is fixed during evolution to depend on its effect on protein stability. We mathematically formalize this framework to develop a Bayesian approach for inferring the stability effects of individual mutations from homologous protein sequences of known phylogeny. This approach is able to predict published experimentally measured mutational stability effects (ΔΔG values) with an accuracy that exceeds both a state-of-the-art physicochemical modeling program and the sequence-based consensus approach. As a further test, we use our phylogenetic inference approach to predict stabilizing mutations to influenza hemagglutinin. We introduce these mutations into a temperature-sensitive influenza virus with a defect in its hemagglutinin gene and experimentally demonstrate that some of the mutations allow the virus to grow at higher temperatures. Our work therefore describes a powerful new approach for predicting stabilizing mutations that can be successfully applied even to large, complex proteins such as hemagglutinin. This approach also makes a mathematical link between phylogenetics and experimentally measurable protein properties, potentially paving the way for more accurate analyses of molecular evolution
‘Do i care?’ young adults' recalled experiences of early adolescent overweight and obesity: a qualitative study
<p>Objective: Individual behaviour change to reduce obesity requires awareness of, and concern about, weight. This paper therefore describes how young adults, known to have been overweight or obese during early adolescence, recalled early adolescent weight-related awareness and concerns. Associations between recalled concerns and weight-, health- and peer-related survey responses collected during adolescence are also examined.</p>
<p>Design: Qualitative semi-structured interviews with young adults; data compared with responses to self-report questionnaires obtained in adolescence.</p>
<p>Participants: A total of 35 participants, purposively sub-sampled at age 24 from a longitudinal study of a school year cohort, previously surveyed at ages 11, 13 and 15. Physical measures during previous surveys allowed identification of participants with a body mass index (BMI) indicative of overweight or obesity (based on British 1990 growth reference) during early adolescence. Overall, 26 had been obese, of whom 11 had BMI99.6th centile, whereas 9 had been overweight (BMI=95th–97.9th centile).</p>
<p>Measures: Qualitative interview responses describing teenage life, with prompts for school-, social- and health-related concerns. Early adolescent self-report questionnaire data on weight-worries, self-esteem, friends and victimisation (closed questions).</p>
<p>Results: Most, but not all recalled having been aware of their overweight. None referred to themselves as having been obese. None recalled weight-related health worries. Recollection of early adolescent obesity varied from major concerns impacting on much of an individual's life to almost no concern, with little relation to actual severity of overweight. Recalled concerns were not clearly patterned by gender, but young adult males recalling concerns had previously reported more worries about weight, lower self-esteem, fewer friends and more victimisation in early adolescence; no such pattern was seen among females.
Conclusion: The popular image of the unhappy overweight teenager was not borne out. Many obese adolescents, although well aware of their overweight recalled neither major dissatisfaction nor concern. Weight-reduction behaviours are unlikely in such circumstances.</p>
