Detection of spatial pattern through independence of thinned processes
Let N, N' and N'' be point processes such that N' is obtained from N by
homogeneous independent thinning and N''= N- N'. We give a new elementary proof
that N' and N'' are independent if and only if N is a Poisson point process. We
present some applications of this result to test if a homogeneous point process

Neutron Transfer reactions induced by 8Li on 9Be
Angular distributions for the elastic scattering of 8Li on 9Be and the
neutron transfer reactions 9Be(8Li,7Li)10Be and 9Be(8Li,9Li)8Be have been
measured with a 27 MeV 8Li radioactive nuclear beam. Spectroscopic factors for
8Li|n=9Li and 7Li|n=8Li bound systems were obtained from the comparison between
the experimental differential cross section and finite-range DWBA calculations
with the code FRESCO. The spectroscopic factors obtained are compared to shell
model calculations and to other experimental values from (d,p) reactions. Using
the present values for the spectroscopic factor, cross sections for the direct
neutron-capture reactions 7Li(n,g)8Li and 8Li(n,g)9Li were calculated in the

Cross sections relevant to gamma-ray line emission in solar flares:He-induced reactions on O nuclei
Gamma-ray production cross sections have been measured for gamma-ray lines
copiously emitted in the He bombardment of O nuclei: the 937, 1042
and 1081 keV lines of F and the 1887 keV line of Ne. Four Ge
detectors with BGO shielding for Compton suppression were used to measure the
angular distributions of the gamma-rays. The excitation functions have been
obtained for He bombarding energies from 3.7 to 36 MeV. Total cross
sections are tabulated for calculations relevant to gamma-ray astronomy. The
importance of these lines as diagnosis for the presence and properties of
accelerated He in solar flares is discussed in light of the measured cross

A new experiment for the determination of the 18F(p,alpha) reaction rate at nova temperatures
The 18F(p,alpha) reaction was recognized as one of the most important for
gamma ray astronomy in novae as it governs the early 511 keV emission. However,
its rate remains largely uncertain at nova temperatures. A direct measurement
of the cross section over the full range of nova energies is impossible because
of its vanishing value at low energy and of the short 18F lifetime. Therefore,
in order to better constrain this reaction rate, we have performed an indirect
experiment taking advantage of the availability of a high purity and intense
radioactive 18F beam at the Louvain La Neuve RIB facility. We present here the

Predictive value of pulse pressure variation for fluid responsiveness after maneuver to change tidal volume in patients with protective ventilatory strategy
Identification and estimation of the area planted with irrigated rice based on the visual interpretation of LANDSAT MSS data
The objective was to test the feasibility of the application of MSS-LANDSAT data to irrigated rice crop identification and area evaluation, within four rice growing regions of the Rio Grande do Sul state, in order to extend the methodology for the whole state. The applied methodology was visual interpretation of the following LANDSAT products: channels 5 and 7 black and white imageries and color infrared composite imageries all at the scale of 1:250.000. For crop identification and evaluation, the multispectral criterion and the seasonal variation were utilized. Based on the results it was possible to conclude that: (1) the satellite data were efficient for crop area identification and evaluation; (2) the utilization of the multispectral criterion, allied to the seasonal variation of the rice crop areas from the other crops and, (3) the large cloud cover percentage found in the satellite data made it impossible to realize a rice crop spectral monitoring and, therefore, to define the best dates for such data acquisition for rice crop assessment
Selenium uptake and associated anti-oxidant properties in Pleurotus fossulatus cultivated on wheat straw from seleniferous fields
The present study was carried out to examine the antioxidant activity in oyster mushroom cultivated on selenium (Se) rich substrate. Pleurotus fossulatus was cultivated on Se-rich wheat straw collected from the seleniferous belt of Punjab (India) and its potential to accumulate Se from substrate was examined. Using different assay systems the modulations in the anti-oxidant profile of Se enriched mushroom was studied in comparison to the mushrooms cultivated on normal straw. The oyster mushrooms were observed to potentially mobilize Se from Se-rich substrates to fruiting bodies, resulting in significantly high uptake (37.2±0.6 μg g−1) as compared to control (3.57±0.53 mg g−1). The antioxidant activity, as determined by various assays, such as reducing power, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging, and metal chelating activity, was higher in the experimental mushrooms when compared to control. The results obtained demonstrate that Se-fortified mushrooms through cultivation on straw containing organic forms of Se can be considered as natural and effective dietary supplements of organic Se for humans. The present study proposes the use of Se-rich agricultural residues as substrates for mushroom cultivation for human and livestock supplementation
