Improving Food Security in Africa: Highlights of 25 Years of Research, Capacity-Building, and Outreach.
Decades of research have led to substantially improved understanding of the nature of food insecurity. A combination of economic growth and targeted programs resulted in a steady fall (until the food crisis of 2007/08) in the percentage of the world’s population suffering from undernutrition (from 20% in 1990/92 to 16% in 2006). Yet over a billion people still face both chronic and/or transitory food insecurity due to long-standing problems of inadequate income, low-productivity in agricultural production and marketing, and related problems of poor health and absence of clean water. Assuring adequate food security for such a large share of the world’s population is increasingly challenging due to continuing resource degradation driven by a combination of population pressure and outdated agricultural practices, poorly functioning input markets, rapid urbanization, increased concerns about food safety, and climate change. This document contains an overview of the past 25 years of research, capacity-building, and outreach by MSU’s Food Security Group. The paper describes key elements of the FSG approach and draws lessons regarding the value of that model. Efficacy of an intensive outpatient rehabilitation program in alcoholism: Predictors of outcome 6 months after treatment
Treatment of alcohol-dependent patients was primarily focused on inpatient settings in the past decades. The efficacy of these treatment programs has been evaluated in several studies and proven to be sufficient. However, with regard to the increasing costs in public healthcare systems, questions about alternative treatment strategies have been raised. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that outpatient treatment might be comparably effective as inpatient treatment, at least for subgroups of alcohol dependents. On that background, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a high-structured outpatient treatment program in 103 alcohol-dependent patients. 74 patients (72%) terminated the outpatient treatment regularly. At 6 months' follow-up, 95% patients were successfully located and personally re-interviewed. Analyses revealed that 65 patients (64%) were abstinent at the 6-month follow-up evaluation and 37 patients ( 36%) were judged to be non-abstinent. Pretreatment variables which were found to have a negative impact (non-abstinence) on the 6-month outcome after treatment were a higher severity of alcohol dependence measured by a longer duration of alcohol dependence, a higher number of prior treatments and a stronger alcohol craving (measured by the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale). Further patients with a higher degree of psychopathology measured by the Beck Depression Inventory (depression) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (anxiety) relapsed more often. In summary, results of this study indicate a favorable outcome of socially stable alcohol-dependent patients and patients with a lower degree of depression, anxiety and craving in an intensive outpatient rehabilitation program
Footprints of the Beyond in flavor physics: Possible role of the Top Two Higgs Doublet Model
The B-factories results provide an impressive confirmation of the Standard
Model (SM) description of flavor and CP violation. Nevertheless, as more data
were accumulated, deviations in the 2.5-3.5 sigma range have emerged pointing
to the exciting possibility of new CP-odd phase(s) and flavor violating
parameters in B-decays. Primarily this seems to be the case in the time
dependent CP asymmetries in penguin dominated modes (e.g. B -> phi (eta') Ks).
We discuss these and other deviations from the SM and, as an illustration of
possible new physics scenarios, we examine the role of the Top Two Higgs
Doublet Model. This is a simple extension of the SM obtained by adding second
Higgs doublet in which the Yukawa interactions of the two Higgs doublets are
assigned in order to naturally account for the large top-quark mass.
Of course, many other extensions of the Standard Model could also account for
these experimental deviations. Clearly if one takes these deviations seriously
then some new particles in the 300 GeV to few TeV with associated new CP-odd

Supports and barriers to implementation of routine clinical assessment for children with cerebral palsy: A mixed-methods study
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate supports and barriers to evidence-based routine clinical assessment of children with cerebral palsy.
Method: This mixed methods study included physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists providing services to children with cerebral palsy (3–18 years) within five organizations across Australia. Four organizations initiated standardized routine clinical data collection (Commencing organizations), and one had previously mandated routine assessment (Comparison organization). Participants completed the Supports and Barriers Questionnaire (n = 227) and participated in focus groups (n = 8 groups, 37 participants). Quantitative data were summarized descriptively, qualitative data were analyzed thematically and comparisons between organizations assessed.
Results: Organizational structures, resources, therapists within organizations, assessment tools, and children and families were, on average, viewed as supportive of routine clinical assessment. There were no differences between the Comparison and Commencing organizations except ‘therapists within the organization’ were viewed as more supportive by the Commencing organizations (p = 0.037). Five themes were derived from qualitative analyzes: motivation to adopt routine clinical assessment; acquiring and utilizing expertise; ensuring effective ongoing communication; availability and distribution of resources; and therapist perceptions of child and family wishes.
Conclusions: Organizations experience challenges to effective and sustained implementation of routine clinical assessment. Adequate resourcing and positive, clear communication were perceived as critical for success
From participation to dropout
The academic e-learning practice has to deal with various participation patterns and types of online learners with different support needs. The online instructors are challenged to recognize these and react accordingly. Among the participation patterns, special attention is requested by dropouts, which can perturbate online collaboration. Therefore we are in search of a method of early identification of participation patterns and prediction of dropouts. To do this, we use a quantitative view of participation that takes into account only observable variables. On this background we identify in a field study the participation indicators that are relevant for the course completion, i.e. produce significant differences between the completion and dropout sub-groups. Further we identify through cluster analysis four participation patterns with different support needs. One of them is the dropout cluster that could be predicted with an accuracy of nearly 80%. As a practical consequence, this study recommends a simple, easy-to-implement prediction method for dropouts, which can improve online teaching. As a theoretical consequence, we underline the role of the course didactics for the definition of participation, and call for refining previous attrition models
The development and validation of a general measure of well-being: the BBC well-being scale
Purpose: The concept of maximising well-being, as opposed to merely treating mental disorder, is a powerful current theme in the area of mental health. Clearly this emphasises the need for appropriate valid and reliable measures of general well-being. This paper examines the appropriateness of a number of measures in this area and concludes that existing assessment tools fail to address the full range of aspects of personal well-being. This paper therefore presents the psychometric properties, validity and reliability of a new measure of well-being-the BBC Well-being Scale. Methods: A total of 1,940 participants completed the new measure, the Goldberg scales of anxiety and depression, the 'List of Threatening Experiences' life events scale, a modified version of the Response Styles Questionnaire and a modified version of the Internal, Personal and Situational Attributions Questionnaire presented via the internet. Results: Exploratory factor-analysis suggested a three-factor solution including themes of psychological well-being, physical health and well-being and relationships. The total 24-item scale had good internal consistency (α = .935) and correlated significantly with key demographic variables and measures of concurrent validity. Conclusions: The new measure-the BBC Well-being Scale-is recommended for research and clinical purposes. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V
Social sciences research in neglected tropical diseases 3: Investment in social science research in neglected diseases of poverty: a case study of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.BACKGROUND: The level of funding provides a good proxy for the level of commitment or prioritisation given to a particular issue. While the need for research relevant to social, economic, cultural and behavioural aspects of neglected tropical diseases (NTD) control has been acknowledged, there is limited data on the level of funding that supports NTD social science research.
METHOD: A case study was carried out in which the spending of a major independent funder, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) - was analysed. A total of 67 projects funded between October 1998 and November 2008 were identified from the BMGF database. With the help of keywords within the titles of 67 grantees, they were categorised as social science or non-social science research based on available definition of social science. A descriptive analysis was conducted.
RESULTS: Of 67 projects analysed, 26 projects (39%) were social science related while 41 projects (61%) were basic science or other translational research including drug development. A total of US 241 million) went to social science research. Although the level of funding for social science research has generally been lower than that for non-social science research over 10 year period, social science research attracted more funding in 2004 and 2008.
CONCLUSION: The evidence presented in this case study indicates that funding on NTD social science research compared to basic and translational research is not as low as it is perceived to be. However, as there is the acute need for improved delivery and utilisation of current NTD drugs/technologies, informed by research from social science approaches, funding priorities need to reflect the need to invest significantly more in NTD social science research
Challenging SO(10) SUSY GUTs with family symmetries through FCNC processes
We perform a detailed analysis of the SO(10) SUSY GUT model with D3 family
symmetry of Dermisek and Raby (DR). The model is specified in terms of 24
parameters and predicts, as a function of them, the whole MSSM set of
parameters at low energy scales. Concerning the SM subset of such parameters,
the model is able to give a satisfactory description of the quark and lepton
masses, of the PMNS matrix and of the CKM matrix. We perform a global fit to
the model, including flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes Bs -->
mu+ mu-, B --> Xs gamma, B --> Xs l+ l- and the B(d,s) - bar B(d,s) mass
differences Delta M(d,s) as well as the flavour changing (FC) process B+ -->
tau+ nu. These observables provide at present the most sensitive probe of the
SUSY mass spectrum and couplings predicted by the model. Our analysis
demonstrates that the simultaneous description of the FC observables in
question represents a serious challenge for the DR model, unless the masses of
the scalars are moved to regions which are problematic from the point of view
of naturalness and probably beyond the reach of the LHC. We emphasize that this
problem could be a general feature of SUSY GUT models with third generation

Relationships: computational thinking, pedagogy of programming, and Bloom’s Taxonomy
This study explores the relationship between computational thinking, teaching programming, and Bloom’s Taxonomy. Data is collected from teachers, academics, and professionals, purposively selected because of their knowledge of the topics of problem solving, computational thinking, or the teaching of programming. This data is analysed following a grounded theory approach. A computational thinking taxonomy is developed. The relationships between cognitive processes, the pedagogy of programming, and the perceived levels of difficulty of computational thinking skills are illustrated by a model. Specifically, a definition for computational thinking is presented. The skills identified are mapped to Bloom’s Taxonomy: Cognitive Domain. This mapping concentrates computational skills at the application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation levels. Analysis of the data indicates that abstraction of functionality is less difficult than abstraction of data, but both are perceived as difficult. The most difficult computational thinking skill is reported as decomposition. This ordering of difficulty for learners is a reversal of the cognitive complexity predicted by Bloom’s model. The plausibility of this inconsistency is explored. The taxonomy, model, and the other results of this study may be used by educators to focus learning onto the computational thinking skills acquired by the learners, while using programming as a tool. They may also be employed in the design of curriculum subjects, such as ICT, computing, or computer science. <br/
