Involvement in community partnerships at Virginia Commonwealth University has its roots in the institution\u27s history. The Medical College of Virginia, founded in1838, and the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, both sought to extend knowledge into the community to change peoples\u27 lives for the better. Today, the VCU campuses are even more entwined with the City of Richmond -- physically, and increasingly so as a partner in the economic and social challenges and opportunities facing the City
The Effects Of Competition On The Price For Cable Modem Internet Access
An important issue in economics is how market structure affects prices.
While the standard view is that competition lowers prices, Chen and
Riordan (2006) argued that with product differentiation it is not
exceptional for prices to be higher under duopoly than monopoly. This
paper empirically investigates one implication from Chen and Riordan,
namely, that prices are lower under duopoly when consumer preferences
for the two products are similar, and they are more likely to be higher
under duopoly if consumer preferences for the two products are more
diverse. Focusing on the price for cable modem Internet access, with or
without competition from a DSL provider, and using education dispersion
and ethnic diversity as proxies for consumer preference diversity, we
find empirical support for this implication. In markets where preference
diversity is low, competition reduces prices. As preference becomes more
diverse, the negative effect of competition on prices diminishes; and
when preference diversity is high enough, competition increases prices

Socio-demographic, Clinical, and Genetic Determinants of Quality of Life in Lung Cancer Patients.
Patient reported health-related quality of life (QOL) is a major component of the overall well-being of cancer patients, with links to prognosis. In 6,420 lung cancer patients, we identified patient characteristics and genetic determinants of QOL. Patient responses from the SF-12 questionnaire was used to calculate normalized Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores. Further, we analyzed 218 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the p38 MAPK signaling pathway, a key mediator of response to cellular and environmental stress, as genetic determinants of QOL in a subset of the study population (N = 641). Trends among demographic factors for mean PCS and MCS included smoking status (PCS Ptrend < 0.001, MCS Ptrend < 0.001) and education (PCS Ptrend < 0.001, MCS Ptrend < 0.001). Similar relationships were seen for MCS. The homozygous rare genotype of MEF2B: rs2040562 showed an increased risk of a poor MCS (OR: 3.06, 95% CI: 1.05-8.92, P = 0.041). Finally, survival analysis showed that a low PCS or a MCS was associated with increased risks of five-year mortality (HR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.51-1.77, HR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.16-1.32, respectively) and there was a significant reduction in median survival time (Plog-rank < 0.001). These findings suggest that multiple factors contribute to QOL in lung cancer patients, and baseline QOL can impact survival
The Effects of International Simple Resale on Prices in International Telecommunications Markets
This paper empirically investigates the effect of international simple
resale (ISR) authorization on the prices for international message
telephone service (IMTS). We compile a firm-level panel data set for
over 200 United States-foreign country bilateral markets from 1995 to
2004. These data provide detailed information on prices, variable costs,
fixed costs and market shares for 75 firms for each bilateral market, as
well as the timing of ISR authorization by the Federal Communications
Commission for each bilateral market. Estimates from a
difference-in-differences model show that ISR authorization, and the
associated lowering of barriers to entry, almost always results in lower
prices for all markets. Additionally, we find evidence that ISR
authorization alters the relationship between market concentration and
price. Prior to ISR authorization more concentrated markets have higher
prices. ISR authorization dampens this effect and in some cases reverses
the relationship so that market concentration is negatively correlated
with IMTS prices set by incumbent firms
A Content Analysis of Psychological Resilience Among First Responders and the General Population
The current study examined how first responders and the general population described the concept of resilience. Categories
of resilience were coded a priori using Stemler’s content analysis. For the general population, positive coping was the
most frequently occurring category followed by social support and adaptability. The next most frequently occurring terms
were societal resources and personal competence. Consistent with the general population, first responders described
resilience most frequently with positive coping. Social support was the next most frequently occurring category, followed
by personal competence, perseverance, emotional regulation, and physical fitness. Although both the general population and
first responder participants highlighted the importance of having a support network, first responders suggested that dealing
with traumatic experiences was more of an individual process, and seeking professional help was not common practice.

Telephone Surveys Underestimate Cigarette Smoking among African-Americans
Background: This study tested the hypothesis that data from random digit-dial telephone surveys underestimate the prevalence of cigarette smoking among African-American adults.
Method: A novel, community-sampling method was used to obtain a statewide, random sample of N = 2118 California (CA) African-American/Black adults, surveyed door-to-door. This Black community sample was compared to the Blacks in the CA Health Interview Survey (N = 2315), a statewide, random digit-dial telephone survey conducted simultaneously.
Results: Smoking prevalence was significantly higher among community (33%) than among telephone survey (19%) Blacks, even after controlling for sample differences in demographics.
Conclusion: Telephone surveys underestimate smoking among African-Americans and probably underestimate other health risk behaviors as well. Alternative methods are needed to obtain accurate data on African-American health behaviors and on the magnitude of racial disparities in them
The Football Factor: Shaping Community on Campus
Many American universities continue to invest in expensive intercollegiate football
programs, and specifically cite the sport’s ability to foster a sense of community (SOC) as justification for the cost. This study sought to assess the importance of SOC and the influence of football on the cultivation thereof. A pre-post test design utilizing an online survey compared SOC levels for students (N = 886) before and after the implementation of Division I football on a large university campus. No significant differences were found in SOC levels before and after the football season (regardless of attendance). Post-test SOC perceptions differed based on game attendance (i.e., moderate and loyal attendees reported the highest levels). Finally, SOC had a moderate to strong positive influence on four outcome variables: Satisfaction, Retention, Current Support of Athletics, and Future Support for Athletics. This study suggests that while SOC is very important to students, at least in the short term the introduction of a football program does not foster a greater SOC for all students
First Steps towards Underdominant Genetic Transformation of Insect Populations
The idea of introducing genetic modifications into wild populations of insects to stop them from spreading diseases is more than 40 years old. Synthetic disease refractory genes have been successfully generated for mosquito vectors of dengue fever and human malaria. Equally important is the development of population transformation systems to drive and maintain disease refractory genes at high frequency in populations. We demonstrate an underdominant population transformation system in Drosophila melanogaster that has the property of being both spatially self-limiting and reversible to the original genetic state. Both population transformation and its reversal can be largely achieved within as few as 5 generations. The described genetic construct {Ud} is composed of two genes; (1) a UAS-RpL14.dsRNA targeting RNAi to a haploinsufficient gene RpL14 and (2) an RNAi insensitive RpL14 rescue. In this proof-of-principle system the UAS-RpL14.dsRNA knock-down gene is placed under the control of an Actin5c-GAL4 driver located on a different chromosome to the {Ud} insert. This configuration would not be effective in wild populations without incorporating the Actin5c-GAL4 driver as part of the {Ud} construct (or replacing the UAS promoter with an appropriate direct promoter). It is however anticipated that the approach that underlies this underdominant system could potentially be applied to a number of species.

Biomarkers of Disease and Treatment in Murine and Cynomolgus Models of Chronic Asthma
Background
Biomarkers facilitate early detection of disease and measurement of therapeutic efficacy, both at clinical and experimental levels. Recent advances in analytics and disease models allow comprehensive screening for biomarkers in complex diseases, such as asthma, that was previously not feasible.
Objective
Using murine and nonhuman primate (NHP) models of asthma, identify biomarkers associated with early and chronic stages of asthma and responses to steroid treatment.
Methods
The total protein content from thymic stromal lymphopoietin transgenic (TSLP Tg) mouse BAL fluid was ascertained by shotgun proteomics analysis. A subset of these potential markers was further analyzed in BAL fluid, BAL cell mRNA, and lung tissue mRNA during the stages of asthma and following corticosteroid treatment. Validation was conducted in murine and NHP models of allergic asthma.
Results
Over 40 proteins were increased in the BAL fluid of TSLP Tg mice that were also detected by qRT-PCR in lung tissue and BAL cells, as well as in OVA-sensitive mice and house dust mite-sensitive NHP. Previously undescribed as asthma biomarkers, KLK1, Reg3γ, ITLN2, and LTF were modulated in asthmatic mice, and Clca3, Chi3l4 (YM2), and Ear11 were the first lung biomarkers to increase during disease and the last biomarkers to decline in response to therapy. In contrast, GP-39, LCN2, sICAM-1, YM1, Epx, Mmp12, and Klk1 were good indicators of early therapeutic intervention. In NHP, AMCase, sICAM-1, CLCA1, and GP-39 were reduced upon treatment with corticosteroids.
Conclusions and clinical relevance
These results significantly advance our understanding of the biomarkers present in various tissue compartments in animal models of asthma, including those induced early during asthma and modulated with therapeutic intervention, and show that BAL cells (or their surrogate, induced sputum cells) are a viable choice for biomarker examination
Factors influencing quality of life following lower limb amputation for peripheral arterial occlusive disease: a systematic review of the literature
Background: The majority of lower limb amputations are undertaken in people with peripheral arterial occlusive disease,\ud
and approximately 50% have diabetes. Quality of life is an important outcome in lower limb amputations; little is known\ud
about what influences it, and therefore how to improve it.\ud
Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to identify the factors that influence quality of life after lower limb\ud
amputation for peripheral arterial occlusive disease.\ud
Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Cochrane databases were searched to identify\ud
articles that quantitatively measured quality of life in those with a lower limb amputation for peripheral arterial occlusive\ud
disease. Articles were quality assessed by two assessors, evidence tables summarised each article and a narrative\ud
synthesis was performed.\ud
Study design: Systematic review.\ud
Results: Twelve articles were included. Study designs and outcome measures used varied. Quality assessment scores\ud
ranged from 36% to 92%. The ability to walk successfully with a prosthesis had the greatest positive impact on quality\ud
of life. A trans-femoral amputation was negatively associated with quality of life due to increased difficulty in walking\ud
with a prosthesis. Other factors such as older age, being male, longer time since amputation, level of social support and\ud
presence of diabetes also negatively affected quality of life.\ud
Conclusion: Being able to walk with a prosthesis is of primary importance to improve quality of life for people with lower\ud
limb amputation due to peripheral arterial occlusive disease. To further understand and improve the quality of life of this\ud
population, there is a need for more prospective longitudinal studies, with a standardised outcome measure
