Something old, someting new : Update of the 2009 and 2013 ABCD guidelines on prevention and management of feline infectious diseases
OVERVIEW: The ABCD has published 34 guidelines in two Special Issues of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS): the first in July 2009 (Volume 11, Issue 7, pages 527-620) and the second in July 2013 (Volume 15, Issue 7, pages 528-652). The present article contains updates and new information on 18 of these (17 disease guidelines and one special article 'Prevention of infectious diseases in cat shelters'). For detailed information, readers are referred to the guidelines published in the above-mentioned JFMS Special Issues
Comparing correction methods of RCM outputs for improving crop impact projections in the Iberian Peninsula for 21st century
Assessment of climate change impacts on crops in regions of complex orography such as the Iberian Peninsula (IP) requires climate model output which is able to describe accurately the observed climate. The high resolution of output provided by Regional Climate Models (RCMs) is expected to be a suitable tool to describe regional and local climatic features, although their simulation results may still present biases. For these reasons, we compared several post-processing methods to correct or reduce the biases of RCM simulations from the ENSEMBLES project for the IP. The bias-corrected datasets were also evaluated in terms of their applicability and consequences in improving the results of a crop model to simulate maize growth and development at two IP locations, using this crop as a reference for summer cropping systems in the region. The use of bias-corrected climate runs improved crop phenology and yield simulation overall and reduced the inter-model variability and thus the uncertainty. The number of observational stations underlying each reference observational dataset used to correct the bias affected the correction performance. Although no single technique showed to be the best one, some methods proved to be more adequate for small initial biases, while others were useful when initial biases were so large as to prevent data application for impact studies. An initial evaluation of the climate data, the bias correction/reduction method and the consequences for impact assessment would be needed to design the most robust, reduced uncertainty ensemble for a specific combination of location, crop, and crop management
On the way to large-scale and high-resolution brain-chip interfacing
Brain-chip-interfaces (BCHIs) are hybrid entities where chips and nerve cells establish a close physical interaction allowing the transfer of information in one or both directions. Typical examples are represented by multi-site-recording chips interfaced to cultured neurons, cultured/acute brain slices, or implanted “in vivo”. This paper provides an overview on recent achievements in our laboratory in the field of BCHIs leading to enhancement of signals transmission from nerve cells to chip or from chip to nerve cells with an emphasis on in vivo interfacing, either in terms of signal-to-noise ratio or of spatiotemporal resolution. Oxide-insulated chips featuring large-scale and high-resolution arrays of stimulation and recording elements are presented as a promising technology for high spatiotemporal resolution interfacing, as recently demonstrated by recordings obtained from hippocampal slices and brain cortex in implanted animals. Finally, we report on an automated tool for processing and analysis of acquired signals by BCHIs
Resilience in Pre-Columbian Caribbean House-Building: Dialogue Between Archaeology and Humanitarian Shelter

It first appeared from Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10745-015-9741-5This paper responds to questions posed by archaeologists and engineers in the humanitarian sector about relationships between shelter, disasters and resilience. Enabled by an increase in horizontal excavations combined with high-resolution settlement data from excavations in the Dominican Republic, the paper presents a synthesis of Caribbean house data spanning a millennium (1400 BP- 450 BP). An analysis of architectural traits identify the house as an institution that constitutes and catalyses change in an emergent and resilient pathway. The ?Caribbean architectural mode? emerged in a period of demographic expansion and cultural transition, was geographically widespread, different from earlier and mainland traditions and endured the hazards of island and coastal ecologies. Great Britain: the intertidal and underwater archaeology of Britain’s submerged landscapes
The submerged landscapes around Great Britain are extensive and would have offered productive territory for hunting, gathering, exploitation of aquatic and marine resources, and—in the final stages of postglacial sea-level rise—opportunities for agriculture. They would also have provided land connections to continental Europe and opportunities for communication by sea travel along now-submerged palaeocoastlines and river estuaries. Most of the archaeological material has been discovered in intertidal or shallow water conditions, but there are also discoveries in deeper water, with dates ranging from earliest human presence nearly one million years ago up to the establishment of modern sea level. Some later material is present where coastlines have continued to sink in more recent millennia. Intertidal sites are especially well represented because of relatively large tidal ranges and shallow offshore gradients on many coastlines. These are often associated with remains of submerged forests, which are periodically exposed at low tide and then covered up again by movements of sand. Some of the most distinctive intertidal finds are the human and animal footprints preserved in intertidal sediments in many locations, especially at Goldcliff East. The earliest, at Happisburgh, are dated between 0.78 and 1 Ma. Fully submerged sites include the Mesolithic site of Bouldnor Cliff with its worked timbers, and the Middle Stone Age artefacts from offshore aggregate Area 240 along with well-preserved ice age fauna and environmental indicators. Pioneering work using oil industry seismic records has produced detailed reconstructions of the submerged landscape, and this is being followed up by new work involving targeted acoustic survey and coring of sediments
Rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry imaging platform for direct mapping from bulk tissue and bacterial growth media
Rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) technology allows real time intraoperative tissue classification and the characterization and identification of microorganisms. In order to create spectral libraries for training the classification models, reference data need to be acquired in large quantities as classification accuracy generally improves as a function of number of training samples. In this study, we present an automated high-throughput method for collecting REIMS data from heterogeneous organic tissue. The underlying instrumentation consists of a 2D stage with an additional high-precision z-axis actuator that is equipped with an electrosurgical diathermy-based sampling probe. The approach was validated using samples of human liver with metastases and bacterial strains, cultured on solid medium, belonging to the species P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis, and S. aureus. For both sample types, spatially resolved spectral information was obtained that resulted in clearly distinguishable multivariate clustering between the healthy/cancerous liver tissues and between the bacterial species
Chemo-informatic strategy for imaging mass spectrometry-based hyperspectral profiling of lipid signatures in colorectal cancer
Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) provides the opportunity to investigate tumor biology from an entirely novel biochemical perspective and could lead to the identification of a new pool of cancer biomarkers. Effective clinical translation of histology-driven MSI in systems oncology requires precise colocalization of morphological and biochemical features as well as advanced methods for data treatment and interrogation. Currently proposed MSI workflows are subject to several limitations, including nonoptimized raw data preprocessing, imprecise image coregistration, and limited pattern recognition capabilities. Here we outline a comprehensive strategy for histology-driven MSI, using desorption electrospray ionization that covers (i) optimized data preprocessing for improved information recovery; (ii) precise image coregistration; and (iii) efficient extraction of tissue-specific molecular ion signatures for enhanced biochemical distinction of different tissue types. The proposed workflow has been used to investigate region-specific lipid signatures in colorectal cancer tissue. Unique lipid patterns were observed using this approach according to tissue type, and a tissue recognition system using multivariate molecular ion patterns allowed highly accurate (>98%) identification of pixels according to morphology (cancer, healthy mucosa, smooth muscle, and microvasculature). This strategy offers unique insights into tumor microenvironmental biochemistry and should facilitate compilation of a large-scale tissue morphology-specific MSI spectral database with which to pursue next-generation, fully automated histological approaches
Matrix vaccination guidelines: ABCD recommendations for indoor/ outdoor cats, rescue shelter cats and breeding catteries
OVERVIEW: This article presents, in a user-friendly, tabluated form, the ABCD's current vaccination recommendations for four broad categories of cats: outdoor cats (ie, those with access outdoors that come into contact with other cats outdoors); indoor cats (ie, those with no contact with other cats from outdoors); rescue shelter cats; and cats in breeding catteries. Note that it is not always possible to make a clear distinction between these various categories and the definition in any individual case is left up to the veterinary surgeon conducting the vaccination interview
