The Role of Family Physicians in Mental Health Care: Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options
amily physicians play a pivotal role in the early detection, diagnosis, and management of mental health disorders within the community. This review article delves into the multifaceted responsibilities of family physicians in the realm of mental health care. Emphasizing the importance of primary care settings as the first point of contact for many patients, the article underscores the need for effective screening tools and methodologies tailored for these environments. The diagnostic precision of family physicians, often challenged by the broad spectrum of mental health symptoms, is explored alongside the potential implications of misdiagnoses. Furthermore, the article evaluates various treatment options, from pharmacological interventions to psychotherapy, and their applicability in primary care settings. The integration of technological advancements, such as electronic health records and telemedicine, is also discussed in the context of enhancing patient care. The review concludes by highlighting the importance of educating primary care physicians to not only pay close attention to the mental health of their patients, but also to be able to accurately screen and diagnose mental health issues using various diagnostic tools. Moreover, it is critical to develop more useful tools that can be used in the context of primary care settings

Effect of the molar ratio of (Ni2+ and Fe3+) on the magnetic, optical and antibacterial properties of ternary metal oxide CdO–NiO–Fe2O3 nanocomposites
Abstract In this work, the effect of the molar ratio of (Ni2+ and Fe3+) on the properties of CdO–NiO–Fe2O3 nanocomposites was investigated. The synthesis of CdO–NiO–Fe2O3 nanocomposites was carried out by self-combustion. XRD, UV–Vis, PL and VSM were used to describe the physical properties of the materials. The results showed significant progress in structural and optical properties supporting antibacterial activity. For all samples, the particle size decreased from 28.96 to 24.95 nm with increasing Ni2+ content and decreasing Fe3+ content, as shown by the XRD pattern, which also shows the crystal structure of cubic CdO, cubic NiO, and cubic γ-Fe2O3 spinel. The Ni2+ and Fe3+ contents in the CdO–NiO–Fe2O3 nanocomposites have also been shown to enhance the ferromagnetic properties. Due to the significant coupling between Fe2O3 and NiO, the coercivity Hc values of the samples increase from 66.4 to 266 Oe. The potential of the nanocomposites for antibacterial activity was investigated against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Moraxella catarrhalis) bacteria. Comparison of P. aeruginosa with E. coli, S. aureus and M. catarrhalis showed that it has a stronger antibacterial activity with a ZOI of 25 mm
ON-1 and BA-IX Are the Dominant Sub-Genotypes of Human Orthopneumovirus A&B in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Human orthopneumovirus (HOPV) is the major viral pathogen responsible for lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in infants and young children in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Yet, predominant HOPV subtypes circulating in this region and their molecular and epidemiological characteristics are not fully ascertained. A total of 300 clinical samples involving nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPAs), throat swabs, and sputum were collected during winter seasons of 2019/2020 and 2021/2022 for HOPV subtyping and genotyping. Of the 300 samples, HOPV was identified in 55 samples (18.3%) with a distinct predominance of type A viruses (81.8%) compared to type B viruses (18.2%). Importantly, the ON1 strain of HOPV-A and BA-IX strain of HOPV-B groups were found to be responsible for all the infections. Sequence analysis revealed a duplication region within 2nd HVR of G protein gene of ON1 and BA-IX strains. This nucleotide duplication exerted a profound effect on protein length and affinity towards cell receptors. Further, these modifications may aid the HOPV in immune evasion and recurrent infections. Data from this study showed that ON-1 genotype of HOPV-A and BA-IX genotype of HOPV-B were dominant in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Impact of Vitamin D on Androgens and Anabolic Steroids among Adult Males: A Meta-Analytic Review
Background: Recent studies indicate that vitamin D impacts male reproductive function, with deficiency linked to infertility. This review evaluates the effect of vitamin D supplementation on male fertility, focusing on total testosterone, free testosterone, the free androgen index (FAI), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and estradiol. Methods: We systematically searched Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus from their inception until July 2024 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving adult males. The primary focus of these studies was on reproductive hormone parameters, analyzed using a random-effects meta-analysis and weighted mean difference (WMD). Evidence quality was assessed using ROB2 and GRADE. Meta-regression and dose–response analyses were performed. Results: Seventeen studies met the criteria for quantitative analysis. Vitamin D supplementation significantly increased total testosterone levels (WMD 0.38, 95% CI 0.06–0.70, n = 15, I2 = 67.03). However, it had no significant effect on other hormone parameters: free testosterone (WMD 0.00, 95% CI −0.02–0.03, n = 9, I2 = 48.12), FSH (WMD −0.02, 95% CI −0.57–0.53, n = 7, I2 = 48.72), LH (WMD −0.09, 95% CI −0.30–0.12, n = 8, I2 = 0.00), SHBG (WMD 0.73, 95% CI −1.14–2.61, n = 10, I2 = 69.05), FAI (WMD −0.92, 95% CI −2.12–0.27, n = 6, I2 = 0.00), and estradiol (WMD −0.02, 95% CI −2.95–2.92, n = 5, I2 = 20.63). Conclusion: This meta-analysis shows that vitamin D supplementation may increase total testosterone levels in men. However, further well-designed RCTs are needed to determine vitamin D’s effects on other reproductive hormone parameters
Does Magnesium Affect Sex Hormones and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Patients with PCOS? Findings from a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Background and Objectives: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder associated with various cardiometabolic risk factors, including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obesity, which contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. This inaugural systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluated the impact of magnesium supplementation on various cardiometabolic risk factors and hormonal parameters in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Materials and Methods: We systematically searched the MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases until 30 March 2024 for studies comparing magnesium supplementation to control in improving cardiometabolic and hormonal factors in PCOS patients. Endpoints were summarized as mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in a random-effects model. Results: The primary search yielded 176 studies. After screening, six studies met our inclusion criteria. Our meta-analysis showed no significant effects of magnesium supplementation on cardiometabolic risk factors and hormonal parameters in patients with PCOS. Conclusions: Magnesium supplementation does not appear to influence the cardiometabolic and hormonal factors in PCOS patients. Further rigorous RCTs are needed to strengthen the evidence and support comprehensive analysis in this area. PROSPERO database (CRD42024526110)
