    We propose to apply Ramsey's method of separated oscillating fields to the spectroscopy of the quantum states in the gravity potential above a vertical mirror. This method allows a precise measurement of quantum mechanical phaseshifts of a Schr\"odinger wave packet bouncing off a hard surface in the gravitational field of the earth. Measurements with ultra-cold neutrons will offer a sensitivity to Newton's law or hypothetical short-ranged interactions, which is about 21 orders of magnitude below the energy scale of electromagnetism.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    In the Standard Model of elementary particles, quark-mixing is expressed in terms of a 3 x 3 unitary matrix V, the so called Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. Significant unitarity checks are so far possible for the first row of this matrix. This article reviews the experimental and theoretical information on these matrix elements. On the experimental side, we find a 2.2 sigma to 2.7 sigma deviation from unitarity, which conflicts with the Standard Model.Comment: accepted by EPJ

    The resistivity vs. temperature relation in bulk ceramic HTSC under self-field conditions as well as in weak external magnetic fields is modelled by local Lorentz force induced fluxon motion with temperature dependent pinning.     Physiological ageing in a polar and a temperate swimming scallop

    We compared physiological ageing parameters in 2 scallops, the temperate Aequipecten opercularis and the Antarctic Adamussium colbecki. These 2 species are phylogenetically closely related and display a similar lifestyle but have distinctly different maximum lifespans (MLSP). A. opercularis does not live longer than 8 to 10 yr, whereas A. colbecki lives over 18 yr. The development of several physiological ageing parameters over time, chosen according to the ‘free radical theory of ageing‘, was compared in the 2 species to identify differences in the ageing process. In the shorter-lived A. opercularis, activities of the mitochondrial enzymes citrate synthase and cytochrome c oxidase and of the antioxidant enzyme catalase showed a more pronounced decrease with increasing age than in the longer-lived A. colbecki. In line with this finding, lipofuscin accumulation increased more distinctly in A. opercularis than in A. colbecki, while tissue protein content decreased in A. opercularis but increased in A. colbecki. Its better preservation of mitochondrial and antioxidant enzyme activities and the avoidance of waste accumulation may enable A. colbecki to live longer than A. opercularis. Mitochondrial function investigated in A. opercularis showed only minor changes with age, and mitochondrial H2O2 generation rates were low at all ages. We relate our findings to the ‘free radical–rate of living’ theory, to the ‘uncoupling to survive‘ hypothesis, and to the particular lifestyle of these scallops

    Konzeption und Entwicklung eines Condition Monitoring Systems mit Low Cost Sensoren zur Überwachung von Roboterschwingungen

    Im Rahmen dieser Veröffentlichung wird ein Konzept zur Erfassung des Schwingungsverhaltens von Industrierobotern mit Hilfe von Low Cost Sensoren vorgestellt. Durch dieses sollen die dynamischen Eigenschaften des Industrieroboters im gesamten Arbeitsraum untersucht werden. Die Roboterstruktur wird dazu durch eine speziell konstruierte Unwuchtscheibe angeregt. Das Messsystem besteht aus einem Beschleunigungssensor, einem Arduino-Mikrocontroller und einem eigens entwickelten Mess- und Auswerteprogramm in der Softwareumgebung MATLAB®. Die Validierung des Konzeptes erfolgt jeweils mit Messreihen an einem Kragbalken sowie an einem Industrieroboter durch den Vergleich mit einem Referenzmesssystem der Firma Brüel & Kjaer. Durch das entwickelte Low Cost Condition Monitoring System lassen sich die Anregungsfrequenzen und –amplituden mit hinreichender Genauigkeit erfassen und Rückschlüsse auf das Schwingungsverhalten des Industrieroboters ziehen

    Quantum motion of a neutron in a wave-guide in the gravitational field

    We study theoretically the quantum motion of a neutron in a horizontal wave-guide in the gravitational field of the Earth. The wave-guide in question is equipped with a mirror below and a rough absorber above. We show that such a system acts as a quantum filter, i.e. it effectively absorbs quantum states with sufficiently high transversal energy but transmits low-energy states. The states transmitted are mainly determined by the potential well formed by the gravitational field of the Earth and the mirror. The formalism developed for quantum motion in an absorbing wave-guide is applied to the description of the recent experiment on the observation of the quantum states of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field

    A new measurement of the neutrino asymmetry parameter B in neutron decay, the angular correlation between neutron spin and anti-neutrino momentum, is presented.     Lattice calculation of 1+1^{-+} hybrid mesons with improved Kogut-Susskind fermions

    We report on a lattice determination of the mass of the exotic 1+1^{-+} hybrid meson using an improved Kogut-Susskind action. Results from both quenched and dynamical quark simulations are presented. We also compare with earlier results using Wilson quarks at heavier quark masses. The results on lattices with three flavors of dynamical quarks show effects of sea quarks on the hybrid propagators which probably result from coupling to two meson states. We extrapolate the quenched results to the physical light quark mass to allow comparison with experimental candidates for the 1+1^{-+} hybrid meson. The lattice result remains somewhat heavier than the experimental result, although it may be consistent with the π1(1600)\pi_1(1600).Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures. Replaced to match published versio
