Design for porous prisons
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (p. 61-62).Incarcerating over two million prisoners a year costs the government an astounding twenty-six billion dollars annually, which means the government spends the same amount of money on each inmate as any American would make a year working a minimum wage job. Although cities "generate" the majority of offenders most U.S. prisons are located outside of cities. Every year more than six hundred thousand prisoners are released to return home, but almost fifty percent of the released return back to prison within three years. This migration of offenders back and forth between the cities they live in and rural prisons rendersthese prisons to be a significant part of the urban gestalt. This migration of people from their home communities to rural prisons renders prisons and people they house to be culturally and economically an integral part of urban community. Nevertheless, the money spent on prisons is housed outside of the communities. This thesis does not claim to be a reformation to prison system but, rather, to prison architecture. Through the medium of architectural design, this thesis will attempt to instigate a dialogue questioning the following hypothesis: Spatial and visual interaction with the outside world is necessary for the sustainable reformation of prison inmates. Economic revitalization of the areas with high rates of incarceration can subsequently reduce these rates. Merging these two propositions gives a rise to following key questions: "What are the architectural implications of a prison that is both secure to prevent escape and porous to allow for the infiltration of the community that surrounds it? And, what are the urban implications of an institution that, instead of benefiting corporations, gives back to the community in terms of space and resources?"(cont.) I propose to test the limits of this proposal in an architectural and urban form dismantled over the fabric of New Orleans. This report will describe the background research conducted in order to define an architectural problem for a Master of Architecture thesis and the design solution that came out of this hypothesis.by Viktorija Abolina.M.Arch
TRANSFORMING HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE ERA OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CHAT TOOLS: CASE STUDY
These days it’s hard to find someone who hasn’t heard of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is a reality of today’s life. Although there are many questions – how to use it effectively, especially in higher education and research. Therefore, the question of AI Literacy becomes relevant, where the key aspects relate to knowledge, skills and psychosocial factors, including a positive attitude towards AI technology and tools. In order to conduct the corresponding transformation of teaching, learning and assessment from the perspective of higher education, the readiness to use AI tools on the example of AI Chat Tools by staff must first be determined. So, within the scope of ERASMUS+ project “DialogEduShift: Transforming Higher Education Teaching and Evaluation Approaches in the Era of AI Chat Tools” the survey was created for cross-country research, including the respondents from the following countries: Poland, Germany, Turkey, Ukraine, Latvia. A comparative analysis of the survey results was then conducted regarding the perspective of three respondent groups: experts in IT field, academician, and university administration. While some questions were specified and intended only for academician. This article reviews the insights and suggestions gathered during the survey by creating the list of guidelines for effective transformation of teaching and assessment in higher education institutions in the Era of AI Chat Tools. The aim of the article is to determine the AI Literacy of three groups of respondents: IT experts, academician, and university administration who use AI Chat Tools to increase the effectiveness of their work and to summarize the guidelines for updating and renewing teaching and evaluation approaches in higher education institutions by implementing AI Chat Tools. This research is valuable for improving AI Literacy of higher education staff.
Corporate icons in the suburban landscape
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2013.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 86-89).The image of the modern workplace in the American suburb has long been a contentious topic of discussion among academics, planning and development professionals, and the public. Today, the critics of office parks in the low-density neighborhoods are applauding the idea of reverse migration back to the city. It is no doubt a trend for large competitive corporations and one that this thesis will explore. But in their day, the suburban corporate centers represented the epitome of advanced thinking about corporate organization, productivity, innovation, marketing, and architecture. This thesis will focus on how these large centers came into being, how they functioned and their continuing legacy. The principal cases and relevant examples discussed were designed by renowned 20th century architects and are of an iconic architectural value. The classic examples examined include: General Motors Technical Center, Deere and Company, PepsiCo, and Union Carbide. The hypothesis is that the day of suburban corporate centers is not over, that despite the changes in corporate culture and work-life, the lure of the isolated center in the landscape is so powerful that it will continue to be valuable to companies - but in new ways: as amenity locations for workers, and with new kinds of uses and activities incorporated into the centers.by Viktorija Abolina.M.C.P
