Diffusive molecular communication in a biological spherical environment with partially absorbing boundary

Diffusive molecular communication (DMC) is envisioned as a promising approach to help realize healthcare applications within bounded biological environments. In this paper, a DMC system within a biological spherical environment (BSE) is considered, inspired by bounded biological sphere-like structures throughout the body. As a biological environment, it is assumed that the inner surface of the sphere’s boundary is fully covered by biological receptors that may irreversibly react with hitting molecules. Moreover, information molecules diffusing in the sphere may undergo a degradation reaction and be transformed to another molecule type. Concentration Green’s function (CGF) of diffusion inside this environment is analytically obtained in terms of a convergent infinite series. By employing the obtained CGF, the information channel between transmitter and transparent receiver of DMC in this environment is characterized. Interestingly, it is revealed that the information channel is reciprocal, i.e., interchanging the position of receiver and transmitter does not change the information channel. Results indicate that the conventional simplifying assumption that the environment is unbounded may lead to an inaccurate characterization in such biological environments

On the landscape of combinatorial optimization problems

This paper carries out a comparison of the fitness landscape for four classic optimization problems: Max-Sat, graph-coloring, traveling salesman, and quadratic assignment. We have focused on two types of properties, local average properties of the landscape, and properties of the local optima. For the local optima we give a fairly comprehensive description of the properties, including the expected time to reach a local optimum, the number of local optima at different cost levels, the distance between optima, and the expected probability of reaching the optima. Principle component analysis is used to understand the correlations between the local optima. Most of the properties that we examine have not been studied previously, particularly those concerned with properties of the local optima. We compare and contrast the behavior of the four different problems. Although the problems are very different at the low level, many of the long-range properties exhibit a remarkable degree of similarity

Structural capacity assessment of corroded RC bridge piers

A new numerical model is developed that enables simulation of the nonlinear flexural response of reinforced concrete (RC) components and sections with corroded reinforcement. The numerical model employs a displacement based beam-column element using the classical Hermitian shape function. The material nonlinearity is accounted for by updating element stiffness matrices using the moment-curvature response of the element section considering uniform stiffness over the element. The cover concrete strength is adjusted to account for corrosion induced cover cracking and the core confined concrete strength and ductility are adjusted to account for corrosion induced damage to the transverse reinforcement. The numerical model is validated against a bench mark experiment on a corroded RC column subject to lateral cyclic loading. The verified model is then used to explore the impact of corrosion on the inelastic response and the residual capacity of corroded RC sections. The results show that considering the effect of corrosion damage on RC sections changes the failure mode of RC columns

Challenges on issues and problems of warehouse efficiencies are always the major concern in the business globalization process. As part of the major logistics and supply chain management activities, warehousing is always part of the strategic and competency plan for companies in enhancing their positions in the logistics industries as their services providers. The objectives of this paper is to examine whether there is any mediating effect of warehousing Management Information System (MIS) in the relationship between warehousing Human Capital Management (HCM) and warehouse efficiency.Overall 182 Small and medium Enterprises (SMEs) were involved in this study with the findings showed that there is a strong relationship between the warehousing operations and warehouse efficiency. The findings indicate the important of warehouse efficiency in the manufacturing firms.Theoretically, the research contributes to the growth and development of the warehouse efficiency theories.Practically it would contribute the owners or warehouse managers of the manufacturing firms in making the right management decisions regarding the warehousing. Therefore, this study prov ides new knowledge and important insights of warehousing attributes that will benefit manufacturing firms and other related industries, particularly for SMEs in Malaysia

Slice sampling technique in Bayesian extreme of gold price modelling

    Get PDF
In this paper, a simulation study of Bayesian extreme values by using Markov Chain Monte Carlo via slice sampling algorithm is implemented. We compared the accuracy of slice sampling with other methods for a Gumbel model. This study revealed that slice sampling algorithm offers more accurate and closer estimates with less RMSE than other methods. Finally we successfully employed this procedure to estimate the parameters of Malaysia extreme gold price from 2000 to 2011

Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa: COL7A1 Mutation Landscape in a Multi-Ethnic Cohort of 152 Extended Families with High Degree of Customary Consanguineous Marriages

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a heritable skin disease manifesting with sub-lamina densa blistering, erosions, and chronic ulcers. COL7A1, encoding type VII collagen, has been identified as the candidate gene for dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. In this study, we have identified COL7A1 mutations in a large multi-ethnic cohort of 152 extended Iranian families with high degree of consanguinity. The patients were diagnosed by clinical manifestations, histopathology, and immunoepitope mapping. Mutation detection consisted of a combination of single nucleotide polymorphism-based whole-genome homozygosity mapping, Sanger sequencing, and gene-targeted next-generation sequencing. A total of 104 distinct mutations in COL7A1 were identified in 149 of 152 families (98%), 56 (53%) of them being previously unreported. Ninety percent of these mutations were homozygous recessive, reflecting consanguinity in these families. Three recurrent mutations were identified in five or more families, and haplotype analysis suggested a founder effect in two of them. In conclusion, COL7A1 harbored mutations in the overwhelming majority of patients with dystrophic epi-dermolysis bullosa, and most of them in this Iranian cohort were consistent with autosomal recessive inheri-tance. The mutation profile attests to the impact of consanguinity in these families
