Gas turbine engine with recirculating bleed
Carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions in a gas turbine engine are reduced by bleeding hot air from the engine cycle and introducing it back into the engine upstream of the bleed location and upstream of the combustor inlet. As this hot inlet air is recycled, the combustor inlet temperature rises rapidly at a constant engine thrust level. In most combustors, this will reduce carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions significantly. The preferred locations for hot air extraction are at the compressor discharge or from within the turbine, whereas the preferred reentry location is at the compressor inlet
Gas turbine engine with convertible accessories
Drive means for connecting a gas turbine engine to its accessories are so constructed as to allow the accessories to be selectively positioned to any one of several predetermined circumferential positions about the perimeter of the engine. This feature permits convenient mounting of the same engine upon vehicles demanding radically different engine mounting arrangements
3-D mesoscale MHD simulations of magnetospheric cusp-like configurations: cusp diamagnetic cavities and boundary structure
We present results from mesoscale simulations of the magnetospheric cusp
region for both strongly northward and strongly southward interplanetary
magnetic field (IMF). Simulation results indicate an extended region of
depressed magnetic field and strongly enhanced plasma β which exhibits a
strong dependence on IMF orientation. These structures correspond to
the Cusp Diamagnetic Cavities (CDC's). The typical features of these CDC's are
generally well reproduced by the simulation. The inner boundaries between the
CDC and the magnetosphere are gradual transitions which form a clear funnel
shape, regardless of IMF orientation. The outer CDC/magnetosheath boundary
exhibits a clear indentation in both the x-z and y-z planes for
southward IMF, while it is only indented in the x-z plane for northward,
with a convex geometry in the y-z plane. The outer boundary represents an
Alfvénic transition, mostly consistent with a slow-shock, indicating that
reconnection plays an important role in structuring the high-altitude cusp
region
Book review: Like Mother, Like Daughter? by Jill Armstrong
This book explores the influence of full-time working mothers on their daughters’ career aspirations and ambitions. It is based on a solid sample of 88 interviews with 30 mother–daughter pairs, interviewed separately and together. All mothers worked in professional and senior managerial careers, and most of the daughters also worked or were pursuing a university degree. The book is well-structured with eight chapters focusing on specific themes..
A study of the interaction of a normal shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer at transonic speeds
An asymptotic description is derived for the interaction of a weak normal shock wave and a turbulent boundary layer along a plane wall. In the case studied the nondimensional friction velocity is small in comparison with the nondimensional shock strength, and the shock wave extends well into the boundary layer. Analytical results are described for the local pressure distribution and wall shear, and a criterion for incipient separation is proposed. A comparison of predicted pressures with available experimental data includes the effect of longitudinal wall curvature
