Suggestions are given regarding the following: education on the importance of conservation; fish farming or aquaculture; restocking or rejuvenation of depleted water bodies; stock assessment; monitoring and surveillance; provision of fishing inputs; and, extension research linkag
Faecal Analysis of Pullet Birds Administered Aqueous Lagenaria Breviflora Robert Extract
Due to the residual effect of antibiotics and the need to eradicate its usage in poultry industry. A 98-days experiment was carried out to determine the efficacy of aqueous extract of fruits of Lagenaria breviflora Robert on faecal samples of birds of the pullet birds. Ninety (90) two-weeks old pullet birds were divided into two treatments (100 and 150g of Lagenaria breviflora per litre of water) and further subdivided into three replicates of 15 birds each. Data collected on faecal analysis (at weeks 8 and 16) were subjected to independent sample T-test. The analyzed result revealed a significant (p<0.01) decrease in the oocyst per gram, egg worm count and and Total bacteria egg count at weeks 8 and 16 respectively. However, higher and best count reduction in oocyst, egg worm and likewise the Total bacterial count was obtained in 150g group compared to the 100g group. Therefore an alternative to conventional drugs, aqueous extract of the fruit of Lagenaria breviflora Robert can be used at the rate of 150g per litre of water
A Simulation Based Approach for Contingency Planning for Aircraft Turnaround Operation System Activities in Airline Hubs
Commercial aircraft undergo a significant number of maintenance and logistical activities during the turnaround operation at the departure gate. By analyzing the sequencing of these activities, more effective turnaround contingency plans may be developed for logistical and maintenance disruptions. Turnaround contingency plans are particularly important as any kind of delay in a hub based system may cascade into further delays with subsequent connections. The contingency sequencing of the maintenance and logistical turnaround activities were analyzed using a combined network and computer simulation modeling approach. Experimental analysis of both current and alternative policies provides a framework to aid in more effective tactical decision making
Fish sorting assessments of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings raised in fish tanks
Fish sorting assessments of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings stocked and raised in fish tanks were undertaken for a 6-month culture period: Sorting was undertaken from the first, second, and third months of stocking the fish fingerlings while the control was not sorted at all. The sorting assessments revealed that the twice sorting of fish fingerlings stocked with a Marginal Rate of Return (MRR) of 3.44 was significantly different (p>0.05) from those sorted once with MRR of 0.912, and three times with MRR of 2.65 respectively, thus making twice sorting most advisable for fish farmers utilizing Clarias gariepinus fingerlings for tank aquacultur
Can Labour and Trade Stimulate the Achievement of Nigeria’s Vision 20:2020 Drive?
The paper examines the extent to which labour and trade can help Nigeria achieve the goal of attaining the position of
one of the 20 largest economies in the world by 2020 using descriptive analysis of data between 2009 and 2013. The aim is to
analyze the extent to which labour and trade respond to the smart initiative by the Nigerian Government in its drive towards
achieving Nigeria’s vision 20:2020. The paper adopted both comparative and exploratory approaches. Exports, imports, trade
as a percentage of GDP and the unemployment rate figures in Nigeria were compared with those of Belgium, Poland, Saudi
Arabia and Sweden that have been in contention for the 20 th largest economy since 2009. Though, the finding of this study
revealed Nigeria is still lagging behind the other four contenders of the 20 th position, but has a lot of potentials to clinch the 20 th
position before or by the year 2020 since she is presently regarded as one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
Therefore, the study recommends that concerted efforts should be made by the Nigerian government to mobilize and harness
the potentials of the labour force to engender accelerated economic development through the establishment of an enabling
environment for the expansion of economic activities, skill development and appropriate training
Development of an improved dug canoe for artisanal fisheries
A dug canoe similar to the one commonly used by artisanal fisherfolks 4.82M (LOA) was designed and constructed using locally available materials, as an alternative to hardwood that is becoming very scarce. The canoe have least cost, easy construction, adequate stability, light weight and easy maneuverability, as its attributes. The light displacement (weight empty) was 37kg which is light enough in relation to craft of same size commonly used by fishermen. The capacity of the canoe was 210 kg (3 persons) and total production cost of N18,400 which is not beyond the reach of an average fisherfolk. The craft is small and fall among the category of crafts that account for the greater percentage of national fish landing. The canoe also closely resembles the local fishing crafts, hence easy acceptance by local fisherfolk
Radiological and chemical toxicity risks of uranium in groundwater based-drinking at Immigration Headquarters Gosa and Federal Housing Lugbe area of Abuja, North Central Nigeria
Inadequate public water supply by the Water Board in Abuja has forced the public to source for groundwater as the only alternative for consumption without consideration for radiological risk. The radiological risk for cancer mortality of uranium in Immigration Headquarters Gosa and Federal-Housing Lugbe groundwater water samples were measured and compared with Water Board and hand-dug well water samples from the same area using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The highest radiological risks for cancer mortality and morbidity were found to be low, with highest values of 1.24 × 10−7 and 1.64 × 10−7 obtained from Federal-Housing Lugbe borehole. The chemical toxicity risk of 238U in drinking water over life time consumption has a mean value of 4.0 × 10−4 μg kg−1 day−1 with highest value of 6.0 × 10−3 μg kg−1 day−1 obtained from Federal-Housing Lugbe. Significantly, this study inferred that the 238U concentrations reported in groundwater based-drinking originated from sheared zone of magmatic metamorphosed basaltic dyke intrusion. Due to the low risk values found in the water samples when compared with the International Reference Standard, radiological and chemical toxicity risks values may not pose any health risk to the public that rely on groundwater in the are
Assessment of Residents’ Satisfaction with Mammy Markets in Military Cantonments in Lagos State, Nigeria
The study assessed the level of residents’ satisfaction with mammy markets in military cantonments, Lagos state. Data was derived from both primary and secondary sources. A multi-stage technique was adopted for the study. There were eleven (11) camps in Ojo Cantonment and seven (7) in Ikeja. Out of these, six (6) camps from Ojo and four (4) camps from Ikeja cantonments were randomly selected. These were 7,854 housing units in the ten (10) selected camps. Systematic sampling method was used to select one out of every twenty-sixth housing unit in the selected camps. Thus, the sample size was 298 housing units (115 from Ojo and 178 from Ikeja) representing 3.7% of housing units in the study area. Information obtained included the socio-economic characteristics of residents and residents’ satisfaction with the markets. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study showed that the Mammy Markets were more patronized by married residents (67.0% for Ojo and 50.6% for Ikeja) who were within the age brackets of 31-50 years (62.4%) in Ojo and 18-30 years (67.5%) in Ikeja. In addition, most (56.0% for Ojo cantonment and 67.5% for Ikeja cantonment) of them were junior non-commissioned officers. However, residents were fairly satisfied with the Mammy Markets (3.04 for Ojo and 2.17 for Ikeja). The study concluded that though the residents’ were more satisfied with security and location of Mammy Markets in the cantonments, a lot still needs to be done by the army authorities to enhance the satisfaction of the residents and traders with the Mammy Markets. Keywords: market, mammy market, residents’ satisfaction, military cantonmen
