A methodology for economics of fish culture in Nigeria: case study of two fish farms in Lagos State
The relationship between some physicochemical parameters and plankton composition on fish production in ponds
The effect of physico-chemical parameters and plankton composition on fish production in ponds was investigated in six fish farms for eight weeks. The physicochemical parameters investigated were temperature=25-30 plus or minus C, transparency=0.45-0.57m, dissolved oxygen=3.0-10.9mg/l, pH=6.0-7.7, dissolved carbon dioxide=5.46-28.3mg/l, total alkalinity=44.37-80.0ppm, chemical oxygen demand=31.88-72.18mg/l and biological oxygen demand=0.66-48.34mg/l. Plankton composition varies and was made of four families of phytoplankton namely; Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Dinophyceae and Diatomida; and four families of zooplankton viz; Protozoa, Rotifera, Copepoda and Dinoflagellates. Farm 1 and 6 recorded the highest average weight of about 1.0kg and average total length of about 40.0cm for the two fish species. This study showed that fish yield was dependable on the quality and management of pond water characteristic
Tertiary conformational transition constant of guinea pig haemoglobin determined from the reaction of 5,5′-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoate) with CysF9[93]β and CysH3[125]β
We have determined Kequ, the equilibrium constant for the reaction of 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoate) — DTNB — with the CysF9*93+β and CysH3*125+β sulphydryl groups of various derivatives of guinea pig haemoglobin at 25oC. In the pH range 5.6 to 9, Kequ decreases almost 50-fold: from a mean of 3.45 ± 0.2 to a mean of 0.073 ± 0.01. Quantitative analyses of the pH dependence profiles of Kequ enable the determination of Krt, the equilibrium constant for the rt tertiary conformational transition of haemoglobin. The t isomer population is 53.9 (± 2)%. In the r conformation the pKas of the amino acid residues whose ionisations are coupled to the reaction of DTNB with the sulphydryl groups are 5.74 ± 0.02 — for a combination of HisNA2*2+β and HisH21*143+β) — and 7.74 ± 0.2 for ValNA1*1+β); in the t conformation they are 5.88 ± 0.05 and 8.23 ± 0.1, respectively. Keywords --- guinea pig haemoglobin; sulphydryl groups; 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoate); equilibrium constants; tertiary conformational transition
Joint Modeling of Received Power, Mean Delay, and Delay Spread for Wideband Radio Channels
We propose a multivariate log-normal distribution to jointly model received
power, mean delay, and root mean square (rms) delay spread of wideband radio
channels, referred to as the standardized temporal moments. The model is
validated using experimental data collected from five different measurement
campaigns (four indoor and one outdoor scenario). We observe that the received
power, mean delay and rms delay spread are correlated random variables and,
therefore, should be simulated jointly. Joint models are able to capture the
structure of the underlying process, unlike the independent models considered
in the literature. The proposed model of the multivariate log-normal
distribution is found to be a good fit for a large number of wideband
data-sets

Crab value chain in Lagos Lagoon complex: implications for food security in a recession economy
This study aims at bridging the knowledge gap in respect of production and marketing of crab fisheries in Lagos lagoon complex of Lagos State, Nigeria. The data have been collated through specific survey carried out between August 2008 and April 2009 in each of the five lagoon systems of Lagos State including Badagry, Ologe, Lagos, Epe and Lekki lagoon. The production systems and targeted clientele of each lagoon differ greatly. The profit margin per unit weight retained at each stage of transaction was relatively low. The crab fishery was observed to be economically viable because of the large turnover and small size of individual operations. The crabs plays significant role in the livelihood of the fisher folks and are very important as export commodity in West Africa
