Surrogates of Recognition. On the Reconstruction of a Possible Critical Hegelian Contribution to Current Discussions on “Identity”
The article discusses a central topic of contemporary understandings of society that seems to have no place in Hegel’s theory: the topic of “identity”, which seems to fall between the process of a “struggle for recognition” on the one hand, and, on the other, a consolidated recognition of subjects and their rights within the established social order. The article would like to propose a further reconstruction here. It discusses which considerations should be included so that the discourse on “identity” does not end in any substantialist or ethno-national, egocentric understandings, but, instead, could become possibly a part of Hegel’s theory. In today’s dynamics and unsettling changes, there are undeniable needs for “identity” (which are also easily addressed, even fuelled, by corresponding offers). These are, as one could learn from Hegel, surrogates of a still not or no longer successful sufficient recognition. In this, “identity” is to be understood as critical work on oneself as a product of becoming, on inheritances, achievements, challenges, divisions, discrepancies, guilt and failures
Die Moral der Exekutive. Das Charisma der guten Politik und eine ‚Fichteanische‘ Gefährdung im modernen Institutionenstaat
As a structural problem of the normative dimension of contemporary societies, the
article shows that increasing real justice deficits go hand in hand with high political
expectations
of ‘justice’, while on the other hand the achievements of the law are often
no longer sufficiently valued. This has a background in a certain way in which modern
moral and political spheres have diverged, for which the theoretical significance can be
illustrated with Johann G. Fichte. Fichte had tried to renew once again the Western cultural
idea of the political with maximum moralization – and for this very reason ended
up having massive gaps in relation to concrete questions of justice. Today’s mental constellation
can be described as ‘inverse Fichteanism’. There is a threat of – especially in
the institutional state – a general moralization of all correlations, and above all a (moral)
general empowerment
of politics (absolutizing the executive). This development stands
at the end of an erosion that took place during the 20th century, and which was reflected
in the great theoretical positions of decisionism and, on the other hand, of legal positivism
Ciało wkracza na scenę. O wypartym doświadczeniu i metaforyce cielesności
Vindication of the body belongs to great projects of our times and the attention body receives can easily be named as one of the leitmotifs of modern age. Body has been subjected to repression, alienation and taming of its uncontrollable tendencies and wide disregard. Previous epochs left us with the dualism of mind and body, in which the spiritual element has been largely favored as the one connected to the universal truth. In recent times the situation shifted and it is the body that is seen as a source of authenticity and individuality. Attitudes towards the body have changed with the development of modern science, cultural perspective and new knowledge about body and its functions including psychosomatic and psychological. Moreover now-a-days bodies are protected like never before with new technologies. Subsequently bodies have become substituted in interaction with the outside world and estranged.Vindication of the body belongs to great projects of our times and the attention body receives can easily be named as one of the leitmotifs of modern age. Ethical Theory in Classic German Philosophy Then and Now
The volume brings together contributions in the spirit embodied by Marek J. Siemek († 2011) and Jakub Kloc-Konkołowicz († 2021), two Warsaw philosophers truly devoted to Classical German Philosophy. They were simultaneously in a relationship between thinker and adept, and thinker and thinker. They both taught philosophy, with a strong emphasis on classic German philosophy, at Warsaw University. Under the theme “Ethical Theory in Classic German Philosophy Then and Now,” students and companions continue their discussions with both of them
Die Macht der herrschenden Verstehbarkeit über Bedingungen eines nicht-trivialen Zusammenhangs von Anthropologie und Hermeneutik (The power of the dominating understanding. On the conditions of a non-trivial connection between anthropology and hermeneutics)
This essay attempts to take up the challenge of the human subject’s understanding in light of contemporary ›systemic‹ superstructures and above all the achievements of Artificial Intelligence. For the construction of a respective theory of human understanding, a number of significant impetuses arise as soon as the argument regarding the conditio humana – in contrast to the one-sided conception of man as an actively interpreting subject – takes into account the fundamental passivity of its condition, as well as its need for comprehensibility. The theory has to consider how the understanding of being a subject develops in acts of comprehension, i.e. the ›self‹ as a secondary formation. (The essay outlines parts of such a theory referencing H. Plessner.)The fruitful consequences of such an undertaking are situated in three areas: (1) The complex processes of construction in all modes of understanding. (2) The imposition or demand to understand (versus a complete moralization, i.e. ›understanding‹ as a bestowed kindness or as pertaining to the extend of one’s character). (3) The primordial situation for human beings is that there are already interpretations and ascriptions; from that results the structural susceptibility to ideology within the hermeneutical process (the homo interpretativus is at once the homo ideologicus). To this ideology which masks the real interrelations belongs essentially the ideology of hermeneutical concepts and metaphors themselves which circulatein our times in everyday speech. Considering these three areas, also helps to escape a new fundamentalism which certain hermeneutical modes of thinking harbour within themselves (›anthropologoumena‹ in place of a necessary social theory)
