Medieval foreign exchange: a time series analysis

This chapter applies rigorous statistical analysis to existing datasets of medieval exchange rates quoted in merchants’ letters sent from Barcelona, Bruges and Venice between 1380 and 1310, which survive in the archive of Francesco di Marco Datini of Prato. First, it tests the exchange rates for stationarity. Second, it uses regression analysis to examine the seasonality of exchange rates at the three financial centres and compares them against contemporary descriptions by the merchant Giovanni di Antonio da Uzzano. Botnet Detection in Virtual Environments Using NetFlow

For both enterprises and service providers, the exponential growth of cloud and virtual infrastructures brings vast performance and financial benefits but this growth has undoubtedly introduced unforeseen problems in terms of new opportunities for malware and cybercrime to flourish. Botnets could be created entirely within the cloud using virtual resources, for a myriad of purposes including DDoS-as-a-Service. This study has sought to determine whether distributed packet capture utilising mirroring technology or some form of sampling mechanism provides better performance for detecting cybercrime style activities within virtual environments. Recommendations are for a distributed monitoring technique which can provide end-to-end monitoring capabilities while minimising the performance impact on popular adoptions of cloud or virtual infrastructures. Investigations have concentrated on distributed monitoring techniques utilising virtual network switches, looking for a proof of concept demonstrator where sample Command & Control and Peer-to-Peer botnet activities can be detected utilising flow capture technologies such as NetFlow, sFlow or IPFIX. This paper demonstrates how by inserting a monitoring function into a virtual or cloud architecture the capture and analysis of traffic parameters using NetFlow can be used to identify the presence of an HTTP-based Command & Control botnet

Scaling up: Achieving a breakthrough in adult learning with technology

It focuses on possible ways to transform the UK’s vocational education and training system, identifying three main priorities for funding by the Ufi Charitable Trust: * increasing the capability of those involved in running the vocational learning system * exploiting networks to bring together learners, learning content and learning professionals * harnessing computers to support individualised and differentiated learning

The relationship between challenge and threat states and performance: A systematic review

The biopsychosocial model of challenge and threat states specifies that these states engender different physiological and behavioral responses in potentially stressful situations. This model has received growing interest in the sport and performance psychology literature. The present systematic review examined whether a challenge state is associated with superior performance than a threat state. Across 38 published studies that conceptualized challenge and threat states in a manner congruent with the biopsychosocial model, support emerged for the performance benefits of a challenge state. There was, however, significant variation in the reviewed studies in terms of the measures of challenge and threat states, tasks, and research designs. The benefits of a challenge state on performance were largely consistent across studies using cognitive, physiological, and dichotomous challenge and threat measures, cognitive and behavioral tasks, and direct experimental, indirect experimental, correlational, and quasi-experimental designs. The results imply that sports coaches, company directors, and teachers might benefit from trying to promote a challenge state in their athletes, employees, and students, respectively. Future research could benefit from a greater consensus on how best to measure challenge and threat states to help synthesize the evidence across studies. Specifically, we recommend that researchers use both cognitive and physiological measures and develop stronger manipulations for experimental studies.
