Imaging of adult ocular and orbital pathology - a pictorial review

Orbital pathology often presents a diagnostic challenge to the reporting radiologist. The aetiology is protean, and clinical input is therefore often necessary to narrow the differential diagnosis. With this manuscript, we provide a pictorial review of adult ocular and orbital pathology.peer-reviewe

Objective video quality metrics for HDTV services : a survey

The exponential growth of video traffic is expected to reach 62% of the global Internet traffic by the end of 2015. This presents as a significant challenge for the television service providers who need to employ networking technologies to monitor specific Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as packet loss rate, jitter and delay, to ensure an acceptable level of quality. However, recent research has demonstrated that the quality experienced by the end-user does not correlate to the QoS parameters employed by most service providers. This paper investigates the correlation between the QoS parameters and the quality perceived by the end. user. These results indicate that although the QoS parameters may sometimes achieve high correlation with respect to the quality perceived by the viewer, they still have large variances. This suggests that the QoS parameters are not enough to quantify the subjective quality with a high level of confidence. This work further compares a number of existing objective video quality metrics. The results presented in this paper show that the Full-Reference Motion based Video Integrity Evaluation (MOVIE) metric and the Spatio-Temporal Reduced Reference Entropic Differences (STRRED) metric achieve excellent correlation with the subjective scores. This research also demonstrates that the STRRED metric and its derivatives have several advantages over the MOVIE metric since less information needs to be transmitted and it is less computationally intensive.peer-reviewe

CARE-LEAVERS’ EFFORTS TO BUILD RESILIENCE THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS OF BELONGING

    Get PDF
This article aims to deepen and theorise our understanding of the need for belonging among young people transitioning out of residential care. The study adopted a qualitative approach, with a sample of 31 residential care-leavers in South Africa, who were followed-up annually for seven years. It addresses the lack of theoretically informed studies and builds an indigenous theory to explain the care-leaving journey. This paper presents findings on care-leavers’ deep desire for authentic belonging, their investment in building authentic relationships, and their frustration and failure in doing so. Implications for practice suggest an imperative to build care-leavers’ sense of belonging after removal from home to care, which will ultimately lead to building resilience. Social workers and child and youth care workers need to co-build networks of belonging to foster young people’s perceptions of themselves and the part that belonging plays in their post-care reintegration

    Adult colorectal intussusception

A 30-year-old woman presented with severe lower, colicky abdominal pain and difficulty in passing flatus. Clinical examination revealed suprapubic tenderness. An abdominal CT was performed which revealed a soft-tissue mass in the pelvis demonstrating ‘a target sign’ appearance confirming the diagnosis of intussusception. The effect of the intussusceptum within the intussuscipiens creates a layered appearance. There is loss of gas within the rectum, instead, this is replaced by a soft-tissue mass of fat density (Hounsfield units −10). A diagnosis of rectosigmoid intussusception was carried out based on the CT findings with a presumptive diagnosis of an intramural lipoma as the primary lead point. Surgical reduction was performed with resection of the distal sigmoid colon. Histology confirmed an intramural lipoma of the sigmoid colon.peer-reviewe
