LM lookangle program
Program computes the spacecraft look angles and the slant range, which define a spherical coordinate system located in the spacecraft body. The program is designed to reduce data from the Lunar Module Missions and to output desired information
Embedded librarianship and problem-based learning in undergraduate mathematics courses
A pedagogical approach of problem-based learning with embedded librarianship
in several undergraduate mathematics courses is implemented in this educational
research. The students are assigned to work on several projects on various
applications of mathematical topics in daily life and submit written reports.
An embedded librarian collaborates together with the instructor and the
students to improve the students' information literacy. Initial reaction and
anecdotal evidence show that the students' information literacy and academic
performance have improved throughout the semesters.Comment: 4 pages, 2 tables, International Congress of Women Mathematicians

The Effects of Children's Time Use and Home and Neighborhood Quality on their Body Weight and Cognitive/Behavioral Development
We estimate a directional distance function to assess the impacts of multiple time-varying parent and child inputs on a cluster of jointly produced child outcomes for children aged 7 to 13 years. The directional distance function specification avoids several well-known empirical problems associated with analysis of household production data, namely, the need to aggregate inputs and outputs, assume separability among inputs and outputs, or estimate reduced form equations. Using a balanced panel of families from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child Sample for 1996 to 2000, we assess the marginal contributions of home and neighborhood environmental quality and children's time allocations, on their math and reading performance, behavior problems, and body mass index. We also measure productivity growth, technical change, efficiency change, and technical efficiency for production of child outcomes. Our results indicate significant jointness among good and bad child outcomes. Significant improvements in children's good outcomes and reductions in bad outcomes are also associated with a better home and parent perceived neighborhood environment, Head Start participation, and increased family time spent together during meals. Children's productivity growth is found to be highest at age 8 years and diminishes thereafter.Health Economics and Policy, Labor and Human Capital,
THE USE OF A MULTI-OBJECTIVE GENETIC ALGORITHM FOR CALIBRATION OF WATER QUALITY NUMERICAL MODEL OF EAGLE CREEK RESERVOIR, IN
poster abstractWater quality models used for water resource management require large amounts of input parameters, whose values may or may not be readily available. The calibration of these models involves the adjustment of several input parameters. The credibility of calibrated models is judged based on their agreement with actual data. However, calibration of water quality numerical models can be an exceptionally computationally challenging process. In this research, the Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code’s (EFDC) HEM3D water quality model was developed for the Eagle Creek Reservoir in order to model three algal groups (cyanobacteria, diatoms, and greens) as well as reservoir nutrient dynamics. A multi-objective genetic algorithm was then used for calibration by adjusting predetermined input parameters within a certain range and based on the model’s agreement with observed data in the reservoir. The genetic algorithm was parallelized to work across a network of machines and on multiple threads. This presentation will demonstrate the advantages of using such a parallelized genetic algorithm for efficiently calibrating computationally expensive numerical models

Voicing the unspoken: Breaking through the barriers of mainstream institutionalized deafness to Pacific therapeutic practices
This paper explores the development of two significant crosscultural research projects in Pasifika psychology. Both projects were designed to speak into the “silent space” of unexplored Pasifika practices and needs in the field of mental health
