Healthcare service evolution towards the Internet of Things: an end-user perspective
For the last two decades the Internet of Things (IoT) has been a subject of growing global interest. Particularly dynamic industries such as the healthcare service sector have just begun to understand the benefits of the IoT for the provision of a new, more advanced type of services. However, whilst the healthcare service industry is yet to fully grasp the benefits of information systems for its practitioners and managers, and for patients and families, there is a need for a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated to IoT-based healthcare systems as another disruptive wave of technologies. In particular, research on the relevance of users’ skills for adoption of IoT-based healthcare services has been limited. Using the current Internet-based healthcare service landscape as a platform for the formulation and testing of its hypotheses, this paper explores the relationship between patients’ capabilities for effective use of information and communication technologies and the success of IoT-based healthcare services. The resulting theoretical model for effective use of information and communication technologies and the success of IoT-based healthcare services was then validated. The validation was based on data collected from a randomly selected sample of 256 users of Internet-based healthcare services provided by the public healthcare system of the Region of Murcia in Spain. The findings of this research inform future strategies for the implementation of new generations of health and well-being services based on IoT technologies
The five factor model and social desirability in the workplace: Issues of criterion-related validity across diverse measures of job performance
Historically, one of the major criticisms of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) has been its poor utility in predicting diverse behavioral criteria. Recently, numerous findings linking personality and job performance have accumulated to question the validity of this criticism. In an attempt to extend this research, self-report FFM, social desirability, and job performance data were collected from 131 phone counselors (19 males and 112 females) employed with a medium-sized midwestern corporation. Multiple regression analyses determined that Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience of the FFM were valid predictors, (fi2 = .04 to .14), of diverse performance criteria. For the overall FFM, social desirability accounted for a significant amount of the predicted criterion variance for Promotion of Services and Quality ofMatch, suggesting this characteristic of personality is better interpreted as a trait, rather than a response bias. Results of this research have implications for personnel selection in business
What Can We Expect for the Development of Rural Areas in Europe?—Trends of the Last Decade and Their Opportunities for Rural Regeneration
Rural areas in Europe have been undergoing structural change for years, resulting in strong functional differentiation and fragmentation into prosperous and structurally weak areas. Rural areas are as diverse as the challenges they face. Not only various megatrends but also social, economic, technological, ecological, and political trends influence and shape the development of rural areas. In order to understand the problems and causes of the current development of rural areas, this paper provides a differentiated trend analysis for rural areas at the European level. A content analysis of more than 70 EU-funded project reports on rural areas and rural development is carried out. The aim is to identify trends and their drivers over the last decade and to summarize opportunities and challenges for successful rural regeneration. These external and overarching trends, particularly in the context of a sustainable transition, renewable energies, the emergence of new technologies and growing awareness of environmental impacts, offer rural areas more opportunities than ever before. The interplay between external incentives (e.g., European Union policies) and endogenous regional development (e.g., local actors) is crucial for the successful exploitation of these opportunities for rural regeneration

Is Prison Sexual Offending Indicative of Community Risk?
This study examines whether prison sexual offending behaviors are predictive of violence upon release. Recidivism rates for four groups of male sex offenders were compared: (a) offenders convicted of community sex crimes, (b) community sex offenders who were convicted under non-sex-crime charges, (c) offenders known only to commit sexually abusive misconduct in prison, and (d) offenders with both community and prison sex offenses. The findings reveal that prison sex offenders are significantly more likely to be arrested for violent offenses upon release. They pose a similar risk to convicted sex offenders on arrests for sexual offenses; however, the average time to arrest was much shorter for prison sex offenders. Using nontraditional data sources (e.g., Accurint, the Colorado and National Sex Offender Registries) considerably increased the known recidivism rate. Implications for prevention and treatment are discussed. </jats:p
