    Lunar laser ranging in infrfared at hte Grasse laser station

    For many years, lunar laser ranging (LLR) observations using a green wavelength have suffered an inhomogeneity problem both temporally and spatially. This paper reports on the implementation of a new infrared detection at the Grasse LLR station and describes how infrared telemetry improves this situation. Our first results show that infrared detection permits us to densify the observations and allows measurements during the new and the full Moon periods. The link budget improvement leads to homogeneous telemetric measurements on each lunar retro-reflector. Finally, a surprising result is obtained on the Lunokhod 2 array which attains the same efficiency as Lunokhod 1 with an infrared laser link, although those two targets exhibit a differential efficiency of six with a green laser link

    MDCgo takes up the association/correlation challenge for grouped ordinal data

    The subjective assessment of quality of life, personal skills and the agreement with a certain opinion are common issues in clinical, social, behavioral and marketing research. A wide set of surveys providing ordinal data arises. Beside such variables, other common surveys generate responses on a continuous scale, where the variable actual point value cannot be observed since data belong to certain groups. This paper introduces a re-formalization of the recent \u201cMonotonic Dependence Coefficient\u201d (MDC) suitable to all frameworks in which, given two variables, the independent variable is expressed in ordinal categories and the dependent variable is grouped. We denote this novel coefficient with MDCgo. The MDCgo behavior and the scenarios in which it presents better performance with respect to the alternative correlation/association measures, such as Spearman\u2019s r rS, Kendall\u2019s \u3c4b and Somers\u2019 \u394 coefficients, are explored through a Monte Carlo simulation study. Finally, to shed light on the usefulness of the proposal in real surveys, an application to drug-expenditure data is considered

    Latest frontiers in grouped-ordinal data dependence analysis

    The bivariate dependence analysis is strongly supported in literature by a wide set of measures, including the Pearson\u2019s r, the Kendall\u2019s \u3c4b and the Spearman\u2019s rS correlation coefficients among others. Currently, we are assisting to an explosion in the availability of ordinal data due to widespread attitudinal surveys. In many cases, survey scales are also built on responses that are observed to belong to certain groups on a continuous scale (grouped variable). Given h groups, the measurement problem may be addressed by encoding each group through a label (from 1 to h) and, subsequently, by assigning rank one to all the units included in the first ordered group and finally rank h to those included in the h-th ordered group. In such a way, the assessment of the direct or inverse dependence relationship may be carried out through Spearman\u2019s rS (e.g. Spearman[3]) or Kendall\u2019s \u3c4b (e.g. Kendall[2]) coefficients which are based on the correlation between the ranks of two variables and on the pairs of concordant and discordant values of two variables, respectively. This results in neglecting the original continuous nature of the grouped variable, since the information from the grouped variable has to be reduced to its ordinal information, too. A crucial issue is then related to dependence relationship studies when one variable is ordinal and the other variable is grouped. The \u201cMonotonic Dependence Coefficient\u201d (MDC), recently proposed by Ferrari and Raffinetti[1], is here re-formalized for the case of grouped and ordinal variables. Through a Monte Carlo simulation study, some basic hints about the new MDC coefficient performance in specific scenarios are given even in comparison with Spearman\u2019s and Kendall\u2019s coefficients. The contribution ends with an application to drug-expenditure data incurred by the Italian system for public health assistance, whose aim is to illustrate the role of age differences in the allocation of drug expenditure both by considering overall patients and single sub-groups, differing in terms of gender

    GYOTO 2.0: a polarized relativistic ray-tracing code

    Polarized general-relativistic radiative transfer in the vicinity of black holes and other compact objects has become a crucial tool for probing the properties of relativistic astrophysics plasmas. Instruments like GRAVITY, the Event Horizon telescope, ALMA, or IXPE make it very timely to develop such numerical frameworks. In this article, we present the polarized extension of the public ray-tracing code Gyoto, and offer a python notebook allowing to easily perform a first realistic computation. The code is very modular and allows to conveniently add extensions for the specific needs of the user. It is agnostic about the spacetime and can be used for arbitrary compact objects. We demonstrate the validity of the code by providing tests, and show in particular a perfect agreement with the ipole code.     Complications of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis and stenosis surgery in patients over 80 s: comparative study with over 60 s and 70 s. Experience with 678 cases

    Purpose: Degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) is a debilitating condition that carries a high economic burden. As the global population ages, the number of patients over 80 years old demanding spinal fusion is constantly rising. Therefore, neurosurgeons often face the important decision as to whether to perform surgery or not in this age group, commonly perceived at high risk for complications. Methods: Six hundred seventy-eight elder patients, who underwent posterolateral lumbar fusion for DS (performed in three different centers) from 2012 to 2020, were screened for medical, early and late surgical complications and for the presence of potential preoperative risk factors. Patients were divided in three categories based on their age: (1) 60–69 years, (2) 70–79 years, (3) 80 and over. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the predictive power of age and of other risk factors (i.e., ASA score; BMI; sex; presence or absence of insulin-dependent and -independent diabetes, use of anticoagulants, use of antiaggregants and osteoporosis) for the development of postoperative complications. Results: In univariate analysis, age was significantly and positively correlated with medical complications. However, when controls for other risk factors were added in the regressions, age never reached significance, with the only noticeable exception of cerebrovascular accidents. ASA score and BMI were the two risk factors that significantly correlated with the higher numbers of complication rates (especially medical). Conclusion: Patients of different age but with comparable preoperative risk factors share similar postoperative morbidity rates.
