    New Record of Satyrichthys milleri Kawai, 2013 (Peristediidae) From Gulf of Mannar, Bay of Bengal

    A specimen of Satyrichthys milleri Kawai, 2013 with the standard length of 221 mm was collected from Tuticorin fishing harbour, south east coast of India on 23rd October 2014. It was collected by bottom trawlers at a depth ranges from 200-250 m. This is the first attempt to provide a detailed description of the species from the Gulf of Mannar. This record was compared with the first reported specimen in order to compare the external morphology with known specimen. The present study constitutes an extension of the known distributional range of this species from the Andaman to the Gulf of Mannar

    A burst search for gravitational waves from binary black holes

    Compact binary coalescence (CBC) is one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves. These sources are usually searched for with matched filters which require accurate calculation of the GW waveforms and generation of large template banks. We present a complementary search technique based on algorithms used in un-modeled searches. Initially designed for detection of un-modeled bursts, which can span a very large set of waveform morphologies, the search algorithm presented here is constrained for targeted detection of the smaller subset of CBC signals. The constraint is based on the assumption of elliptical polarisation for signals received at the detector. We expect that the algorithm is sensitive to CBC signals in a wide range of masses, mass ratios, and spin parameters. In preparation for the analysis of data from the fifth LIGO-Virgo science run (S5), we performed preliminary studies of the algorithm on test data. We present the sensitivity of the search to different types of simulated CBC waveforms.     Aspirin, a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, has a long history of therapeutic applications in pain relief, fever reduction, and inflammation management. Recent research has expanded its potential utility in treating neurological conditions such as migraines and Alzheimer's disease. For migraine management, aspirin's mechanism of action involves the suppressing the production of prostaglandins, a key factor in migraine-related inflammation and pain. Clinical trials have demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks. Aspirin, especially when combined with metoclopramide, has proven to be a valuable treatment option for acute migraine episodes. In the case of Alzheimer's disease, which exhibits neurodegeneration, aspirin's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have generated interest in its potential as a preventive and therapeutic agent. While epidemiological studies and biological processes have suggested aspirin's potential benefits, randomized studies have raised concerns about the risks of bleeding, outweighing the potential advantages. This review article examines the latest research on aspirin's role in managing and preventing migraines and Alzheimer's disease. It also discusses the clinical research regarding aspirin's effectiveness, safety profile, and possible side effects in these neurological conditions. Finally, the article explores the directions for future research involving aspirin in relation to migraines and Alzheimer's disease

    Enhancing conservation science capacity in India: first decade of the Master's programme in wildlife biology and conservation

    India is a mega biodiverse country but, with a human population of 1.2 billion and aspirations for further economic growth, conservation of this biodiversity faces huge challenges. A decade ago, identifying the need for strong academic programmes to train conservation professionals, the Wildlife Conservation Society collaborated with the National Centre for Biological Sciences of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research to initiate a Master's degree programme in wildlife biology and conservation, comprising cutting-edge course modules taught by practising scientists and conservationists, followed by a dissertation. The programme trains a cohort of 15 students every 2 years, and the fifth cohort graduated in September 2014. In all, 74 budding conservationists have graduated in the programme's first decade. Their field research has spanned multiple species and ecosystems in 20 Indian states, and alumni of the course now form the core of many academic and conservation institutions. The alumni have engaged in practical conservation initiatives, driving both policy and practice in India by setting high standards of research and science-based conservation. The sixth cohort of 15 students began their training in July 2014

    Status of exploitation of coastal tunas in the Indian seas

    Tuna and billfish production from Indian seas during the period 1985-'99 evinced an increasing trend and the landings fluctuated between 24,287 t (1987) and 53,6621 (1992). The average annual production during the said period was 40,2041, contributing to 3.6% of the total pelagic fish landings and 1.8% of the total marine fish landings. On an average, 24% of the total tuna and billfish production during 1991-'99 was contributed by northwest coast, 2% by Andaman and Nicobar islands and 14.9% by Lakshadweep. Among the maritime states, Kerala (36 %), Gujarat (18.1%) Tamilnadu (11.6%), Maharashtra (5.9%), Kamataka (5%), Andhra Pradesh (4.4 %) and Goa (2%) were the prime tuna producing states

    Clinical profile of dengue fever in a tertiary care centre in North Kerala

    Background: Dengue fever is the most common arboviral disease and fifty percent of world population is at risk. Frequent outbreaks are reported from all states of our country and incidence increases every year. This case study is of 305 patients from Academy of Medical Sciences, which is a tertiary care centre and research Institute in North Kerala. The objective of this study was to study the clinical profile of dengue fever.Methods: Study was prospective observational study conducted during the epidemic for a period of one year. All the cases which fulfilled WHO criteria for diagnosis of dengue fever and those who are positive for IGM antibody detected by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (IgM ELISA) were only included in this study.Results: There is male preponderance, and those above the age of 30 years affected more. All patients had fever. Gastrointestinal manifestation like nausea and vomiting were commonly observed symptoms. Hepatomegaly, rash and conjuctival suffusion were important physical findings, whereas splenomegaly noted only in 8.2% cases. Thrombocytopenia is noticed in 73.96%.Conclusions: The mortality is 2.6%. Hypotension and thrombocytopenia are the two important determinants of mortality. Dengue Shock syndrome and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever were relatively less when compared to other epidemics from different regions

    Connecting Numerical Relativity and Data Analysis of Gravitational Wave Detectors

    Gravitational waves deliver information in exquisite detail about astrophysical phenomena, among them the collision of two black holes, a system completely invisible to the eyes of electromagnetic telescopes. Models that predict gravitational wave signals from likely sources are crucial for the success of this endeavor. Modeling binary black hole sources of gravitational radiation requires solving the Eintein equations of General Relativity using powerful computer hardware and sophisticated numerical algorithms.     Generative Model for Conceptual Design of Defence Equipment

    Requirement study and analysis forms a key component in conceptual design of new products and systems. For complex systems like defence equipment, concept design is very important and should primarily satisfy all user requirements. Brings out a new generative model for concept design of defence systems using principles of systems engineering. A structured model and methodology is presented starting from capturing the user requirements, developing multiple solutions, short listing the candidate solutions and finally selecting one or two feasible designs. The model and process is illustrated with the help of a case study on the development of a torpedo defence system for naval ships.
