INFLUENCE OF ELECTRONIC REFERENCE ON USERS’ SATISFACTION IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES
The study investigates the influence of electronic reference on users’ satisfaction in academic libraries. In order to achieve the set objectives, the researcher adopted survey research design using questionnaire as the instrument for gathering data. The total population for the study was 15,022 from which 150 students were sampled. Based on the findings of the study, electronic reference sources are only available to a low extent, Information Communication Technologies are used to a high extent for rendering reference services, electronic reference has a positive influence on users’ satisfaction and erratic power supply, poor internet connectivity, inadequate facilities and librarians poor attitude among others are the prevalent constrains of electronic reference in academic libraries. It was therefore concluded that the adoption and utilization of electronic reference tremendously increases users’ satisfaction in the library. The study recommended that academic libraries should be encouraged to harness electronic reference in their operations
THE INTERSECTION BETWEEN RACE, CLINICAL RESEARCH, AND MEDICAL EDUCATION WITH EXAMPLES ON STRATEGIES AND POLICES TO UNDERSTAND, IDENTIFY, AND MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF RACE-BASED MEDICINE / RACISM IN MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS
Race-based medicine is the belief that people of different races have different biological characteristics that affect the diseases they are prone to, and the types of treatments and procedures that should be used. This belief is reflected in medical education, clinical practice, and research. Race-based medicine was born from slavery. Notions of biological difference between races were used to justify slavery, and the structural racism that was a product of the slavery era gave rise to race-based medicine. Despite the common belief that medicine is evidence-based and objective, science and medicine reflect society, and thus are also flawed and biased. Medicine and medical education cannot be separated from the views of the dominant culture. The belief of today dictates the lens through which physicians and researchers look at patients, procedures, and treatments. Despite more and more evidence that there is no biological basis to our social construction of race, race-based medicine is still being taught in medical schools. Medical vignettes and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) display questions that encourage the normalcy of whiteness, reinforce stereotypes, and emphasize that diseases are race-specific. Race-based medicine is dangerous; not only is the concept unscientific and based in, the belief is also a source of trauma for minority students and residents. How does one cope with the daily assault of information that your race is a risk factor for many diseases, a justification for treating you differently, or that your fellow physicians are being trained to believe that the amount of melanin in your skin is enough information upon which to base assumptions? Instead of desperately searching for innate racial differences, society needs to change their focus to social determinants of health. We are chasing the rabbit hole of biological racial differences, but ignoring social determinants and structural racism, which distracts us from achieving health equity.Urban Bioethic
Treating Ichthyotoxin Poisoning Induced by Gar Eggs Ingestion
Background: A Gar is a primarily freshwater fish that resides in North America. The flesh of a garfish is edible; however, the eggs and any meat surrounding the eggs are highly toxic to humans. The toxicity is induced by the protein ichthyotoxin. Case Report: The studied patient was an 18-year-old male who ingested 2-3 spoons full of gar eggs in their residence place. Each spoon full contained 40-50 eggs. The estimated total amount of consumed eggs equaled 3 teaspoons. Approximately one hour after eating the eggs, the patient began to feel unwell. Upon arrival at the local Children’s Hospital, the patient was experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sweating. Conclusion: Patients affected by gar eggs should be treated symptomatically, given there is no antidote or specific treatment for ichthyotoxin. Further research is required on the mechanism that makes ichthyotoxin toxic. Luckily, the presented patient presented no seizures due to the toxin and the care providers could manage the related symptoms

PRINCIPALS’ HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AS CORRELATES OF TEACHERS’ JOB ENGAGEMENT IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU STATE
This study ascertained principals’ human resource management practices as correlates of teachers’ job engagement in public secondary schools in Enugu State. The study was guided by four research questions and four hypotheses which were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a correlation design. The population of the study comprised 8,805 teachers in the 291 public secondary schools in Enugu State. The sample size for this study consisted of 750 public secondary school teachers. The proportionate stratified sampling technique was used in this study. A researcher-developed instruments titled Principals’ Human Resource Management Practices (QPHRMP)” and Questionnaire on Teachers’ Job Engagement” (QTJE) was used for data collection, it was validated by three experts, who are lecturers in Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Cronbach alpha was used to determine the reliability co-efficient for QPHRMP and QTJE were 0.78 and 0.82 obtained respectively. The researchers together with eight research assistants collected data for the study using on-the spot technique and 97% return rate was recorded. Data analysis was done using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient to answer the research questions and linear regression analysis to test the hypotheses. The findings of this study revealed among others that there is a strong positive relationship between principals’ monitoring practices and teachers’ job engagement. The findings also indicates that principals\u27 practices of involving teachers in decision-making contribute to improving teachers\u27 job engagement, but it is not the sole factor. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that principals should actively seek to involve teachers in key decisions affecting the school, especially those related to curriculum development, teaching methods, and school policies

Hydrocarbon Generative Windows Determination Using Geomathematical Model: Case Study from Ogbogede Field, Niger Delta, Nigeria
Oil and gas generative windows of source rocks in Niger Delta have been determined by applying a mathematical model to geotemperature data from the wells of Ogbogede oil field. GR and Resistivity log signatures show that the Benin and Agbada Formations comprises massive sands with clay intercalations while the Agbada Formation comprises alternate sequence of sandstones and shales. The geothermal gradients for the field range from 1.4oC/100m to 2oC/100m with an average of 1.8oC/100m and standard deviation of 0.2oC/100m. Geotemperature analysis of shales of the Agbada Formation varies from 58.92oC-107.6oC, indicating that they are thermally mature and within the oil generative window, at depths varying approximately from 1833.30 m to 5166.67m. The gas window occurs from 5166.67 m to 11000 m. This work has provided a mathematical method of source rock evaluation to compliment geochemistry. The outcome is a very important tool, which can be applied to other fields and sedimentary basins in hydrocarbon exploration. Keywords: Hydrocarbon Generative Windows, Geotemperature dat
A Case of Unintentional Isopropanol Poisoning via Transdermal Absorption Delayed by Weekly Hemodialysis
BACKGROUND Isopropanol toxicity is the most common reported toxic alcohol ingestion in the United States and is well known to emergency physicians. Most toxicities result from unintentional ingestion of rubbing alcohol; however, an under-recognized mechanism of unintentional toxicity is transdermal absorption. Additionally, hemodialysis effectively removes isopropanol and its metabolites from circulation, so that in patients receiving regular hemodialysis, the manifestation of toxicity can be delayed.
CASE REPORT A 67-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease secondary to insulin-dependent type II diabetes on once-weekly hemodialysis presented to the Emergency Department via the Emergency Medical Service with acute encephalopathy, severe hypoglycemia, and hypothermia. Her daughter found her confused and lethargic, smelling of acetone, and with a bottle of rubbing alcohol in her hand. The patient had been topically applying large quantities of rubbing alcohol for several months as a home remedy for cramps and adamantly denied any oral ingestion. She had missed several hemodialysis appointments over the previous month. Upon arrival, the patient was confused, profoundly hypoglycemic, and hypothermic. Additional laboratory examination revealed an elevated plasma osmolality, osmolar gap, isopropanol level, and acetone level. She was treated supportively with glucose-containing fluids and external warming and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Hemodialysis was resumed, and the patient was discharged 3 days after admission with stable blood glucose, regular body temperature, and baseline mental status.
CONCLUSIONS Our report is unique as it presents both an under-recognized mechanism of isopropanol toxicity (transdermal absorption) and an uncommon presentation of chronic exposure with manifestations of toxicity delayed by regular hemodialysis
