    Cellular angiofibroma in women: A review of the literature

    Cellular Angiofibroma (CA) represents a quite recently described mesenchymal tumour that occurs in both genders, in particular in the vulvo-vaginal region in women and in the inguino-scrotal area in men. The first description of this tumour dates from Nucci et al. article in 1997; since then, the literature reports different reviews and case report of this tumour in both genders, but no article specifically addressing CA treatment and follow-up in women. In this review we collected all 79 published female CA cases, analyzing the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical features of the tumour. CA affects women mostly during the fifth decade of life, it is generally a small and asymptomatic mass that mainly arises in the vulvo-vaginal region, although there are reported pelvic and extra-pelvic cases. The treatment requires a simple local excision due to an extremely low ability to recurrent locally and no chance to metastasize. Throughout the immunohistochemical and pathological findings it is also easily possible a differential diagnosis from the other soft tissue tumours which affect the vulvo-vaginal area, such as spindle cell lipoma, solitary fibrous tumour, angiomyofibroblastoma and aggressive angiomyxoma

    Endobronchial metastasis: an epidemiologic and clinicopathologic study of 174 consecutive cases

    PURPOSE: Endobronchial metastases from extrapulmonary solid tumors are a rare event and currently available epidemiological and clinico-pathological data mainly derive from anecdotal case reports. METHODS: A series of 174 consecutive cases of endobronchial metastases from extrathoracic solid tumors were collected over a period of 18 years. Immunohistochemistry was performed in 115 cases. Complete imaging features were available in 81 patients, and analysis of the latency period between primitive tumor diagnosis and occurrence of endobronchial metastasis was obtained. RESULTS: Among all bronchoscopic examinations performed in the same period for malignancy, a mean of 5.6 cases per year consisted of endobronchial metastases (range 2-17 cases), with a statistically significant increase when comparing the periods 1992-2000 (65 cases, 37%) and 2001-2009 (109 cases, 63%) (p = 0.05). Overall, 4% of endobronchial biopsies for suspected malignancy disclosed an endobronchial metastasis from extrapulmonary tumor. Breast (52 cases, 30%), colorectal (42 cases, 24%), renal (14%), gastric (6%) and prostate (4.5%) cancers and melanoma (4.5%) were the most common metastatic neoplasms presenting as endobronchial mass. One-hundred fifty-four cases were identified after the primitive tumor diagnosis (metachronous cases, 89%), 11 cases were simultaneously evidenced in extrapulmonary and endobronchial sites (synchronous cases, 6%), while 9 occult metastatic cases (5%) first presented as endobronchial mass (anachronous cases). Overall, mean latency from extrapulmonary tumor diagnosis and endobronchial metastasis was 136 months (range, 1-300 months). The most frequent symptoms were dyspnea (23%), cough (15%) and haemoptysis (12%), while 26% of patients were totally asymptomatic. At radiology, 53% presented as multiple pulmonary nodules, while other cases presented as hilar and mediastinal mass, single peripheral nodule, atelectasis or pleural effusion. CONCLUSIONS: Endobronchial metastases from extrapulmonary tumors account for about 4% of all bronchoscopic biopsies performed for suspected malignancy and in 5% of the cases the metastasis is the first manifestation of the neoplasm

    Artificial intelligence and new business models in agriculture: a structured literature review and future research agenda

    Purpose Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a growing technology impacting several business fields. The agricultural sector is facing several challenges, which may be supported by the use of such a new advanced technology. The aim of the paper is to map the state-of-the-art of AI applications in agriculture, their advantages, barriers, implications and the ability to lead to new business models, depicting a future research agenda. Design/methodology/approach A structured literature review has been conducted, and 37 contributions have been analyzed and coded using a detailed research framework. Findings Findings underline the multiple uses and advantages of AI in agriculture and the potential impacts for farmers and entrepreneurs, even from a sustainability perspective. Several applications and algorithms are being developed and tested, but many barriers arise, starting from the lack of understanding by farmers and the need for global investments. A collaboration between scholars and practitioners is advocated to share best practices and lead to practical solutions and policies. The promising topic of new business models is still under-investigated and deserves more attention from scholars and practitioners. Originality/value The paper reports the state-of-the-art of AI in agriculture and its impact on the development of new business models. Several new research avenues have been identified

    Virtual relational capital for business development: a case study

    Purpose The study aims to investigate virtual relational capital (VRC) to evaluate to what extent virtual relations (VR), obtained by using new technologies, support the development of firms, also considering the increasing sustainability’s needs. The study addresses the literature gap on VRC dynamics through an empirical analysis. Design/methodology/approach The investigation focuses on a single case study in the lighting industry, deepening the case of a small Italian company. The case is analyzed through the lens of the CAOS framework model by Paoloni, nurtured through direct semi-structured interviews with the entrepreneur and some managers and consultants, and data collected via web scraping. Findings VRC, obtained by the use of new technological tools, contributes to developing and fostering the innovation ecosystem in which companies need to create new skills and synergic alliances with other stakeholders. Moreover, VR can improve commercial and sales performance, stakeholder engagement and sustainability, including alignment with the circular economy and waste management principles. VRC can support smaller companies with more limited resources to connect to a broader range of actors, raising their voices with policymakers and other relevant international institutions. Originality/value The study contributes to the theoretical understanding of VRC, especially in an era in which new technologies play a fundamental role for both businesses and people. It also provides practical insights into how companies, especially smaller ones, can maximize their sustainable impact by strategically adopting virtual interactions with meaningful stakeholders like customers, key executive partners, industrial associations and policymakers

    Generating story variants with constrained video recombination

    We present a novel approach to the automatic generation of filmic variants within an implemented Video-Based Storytelling (VBS) system that successfully integrates video segmentation with stochastically controlled re-ordering techniques and narrative generation via AI planning. We have introduced flexibility into the video recombination process by sequencing video shots in a way that maintains local video consistency and this is combined with exploitation of shot polysemy to enable shot reuse in a range of valid semantic contexts. Results of evaluations on output narratives using a shared set of video data show consistency in terms of local video sequences and global causality with no loss of generative power
