On the efectiveness of several market integration measures: an empirical analysis

Many market integration measures are operationalized to compute their numerical values during a period characterized by the lack of stability ad market turmoil. The results of the tests give their degree of effectiveness, and reveal that the measures based on the principles of asset valuation, versus statistical measures, more clearly yield the level of integration of financial markets. Besides, cross market arbitrage-linked measures and equilibrium models-linked measures provide complementary information and reflect different properties, and consequently, both types of measures may be useful in practice

"El productor creativo: ¿tautología o excepción?"

Desde los mismos orígenes de la industria cinematográfica, el trabajo del productor ha abarcado tanto competencias financieras y administrativas como creativas, sin existir –por su propia naturaleza– un obligado predominio en uno u otro sentido. Sólo la evolución de la industria del cine, así como las aptitudes personales de quienes han desempeñado este oficio, han inclinado la balanza en favor de un saber-hacer más bien técnico o, por el contrario, de la capacidad creativa, siendo éste último el caso menos frecuente. Durante las últimas décadas, tanto en Estados Unidos como en Europa, ha resurgido con singular fuerza la figura del productor creativo, heredero del modo de entender la producción durante el sistema de estudios de Hollywood. Algunos autores defienden su carácter excepcional, como si se tratara de una rara avis; otros en cambio opinan que producción y creatividad siempre han sido términos sinónimos. Surge así el tema central sobre el que pretendo reflexionar aquí: ¿Hasta qué punto puede hablarse de creatividad en la producción de películas y de qué modo se ejerce? ¿Tiene sentido hablar de productores creativos? ¿Estamos en ese caso ante un término redundante o ante una excepción? ¿Puede llegar a considerarse al productor también como autor del filme, al menos en algunos casos? La respuesta a estas cuestiones abre el debate no sólo sobre la naturaleza del oficio del productor, sino sobre la misma autoría de la obra cinematográfica

“Historia y ficción en el cine de David Puttnam”

Una característica que comparten varias de las películas del productor británico David Puttnam es la referencia a personajes y acontecimientos históricos. Así sucede en Carros de fuego (Chariots of Fire, 1981), Los gritos del silencio (The Killing Fields, 1984) y La misión (The Mission, 1986). Este artículo analiza la relación entre verdad histórica y licencias dramáticas en estas tres películas emblemáticas de Puttnam y explica cómo para entender con profundidad las claves temáticas presentes en su filmografía, las referencias históricas son una premisa básica. // One of the features shared by the films made by the british producer David Puttnam is their references to historical characters and events. This is the case, for instance of Chariots of Fire, (1981), The Killing Fields (1984)and The Mission (1986). This article analyses the relationship between historical truth and dramatic licenses in this emblematic Puttnam's films, and explains how the historical framework is a key aspect to understand his themes

Predicting human preferences using the block structure of complex social networks

With ever-increasing available data, predicting individuals' preferences and helping them locate the most relevant information has become a pressing need. Understanding and predicting preferences is also important from a fundamental point of view, as part of what has been called a "new" computational social science. Here, we propose a novel approach based on stochastic block models, which have been developed by sociologists as plausible models of complex networks of social interactions. Our model is in the spirit of predicting individuals' preferences based on the preferences of others but, rather than fitting a particular model, we rely on a Bayesian approach that samples over the ensemble of all possible models. We show that our approach is considerably more accurate than leading recommender algorithms, with major relative improvements between 38% and 99% over industry-level algorithms. Besides, our approach sheds light on decision-making processes by identifying groups of individuals that have consistently similar preferences, and enabling the analysis of the characteristics of those groups

En este trabajo abordamos el diseño de una actividad didáctica cuya finalidad involucra el uso de las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación para ser lo que llamamos una actividad didáctica en línea. Basados en la teoría de las situaciones didácticas proponemos la creación de situaciones a-didácticas que permitan a los estudiantes crear conceptos relacionados con la trigonometría utilizando actividades didácticas en línea que exploten las características de internet. Los diseños están dirigidos a estudiantes de escuelas secundarias (12 a 15 años) del sistema educativo del estado de Veracruz en México

"The Film Producer as a Creative Force"

This article seeks to shed new light on our understanding of the work of the film producer, discussing the creative nature of this craft. It does that by searching for answers to two questions: Firstly, up to what point can we talk about creativity in the producing of films? And secondly, how is that creativity practiced? To deal with both these questions it offers a historical overview of the creative producer and how it is presently considered. Finally, it also briefly addresses the influence of digital revolution in the production process

Integration and arbitrage in the spanish financial markets: an empirical approach

Several authors have introduced different ways to measure the integration between fmancial markets. Most of them are derived from the basic assumptions to price assets, like the Law of One Price or the absence of arbitrage opportunities. Two perfectly integrated markets must give identical price to identical fmal payoffs, and a vector of positive discount factors, common to both markets, must exist. Therefore, if these properties do not hold, their degree of violation can be measured and considered as an integration measure. The present paper empirically test the integration measures in the Spanish fmancial markets. Hence, several interesting values are obtained, like for instance, the state prices or the risk-neutral probabilities. Furthermore, when the risk-neutral probabilities do not exist, explicit cross-market arbitrage portfolios are detected. The results of our test are surprising for several reasons. First of all, the arbitrage opportunities very often appear, and the bid-ask spread and the transaction costs are not able to avoid the arbitrage profits. Furthermore, the criticisms, which are usually argued when empirical papers show the existence of arbitrage opportunities, do not apply here, since we work with perfectly synchronized high frequency data. On the other hand, different integration measures show a similar evolution along the tested period, although these measures give different information about the markets efficiency and integration, and they do not have to be necessarily related
