Prueba de práctica diaria: efectos sobre el rendimiento matemático en la resolución de operaciones fundamentales en fracciones
This experimental study evaluated the effects of implementing the Daily Practice test in solving fundamental operations on fractions as one of the deficiencies of students in Mathematics. Moreover, achievement test results reveal that one of the weaknesses of the students is mastery and computational fluency in solving problems involving fractions. The study aimed to compare daily testing and conventional review as a tool to master concepts involving fractions. This was made through the pre-posttest in the students’ performance before and after being exposed to daily testing. The respondents were grouped according to conventional review and a group exposed to the daily testing for eight weeks. Two distinct classes; experimental (n=75) and control (n=75) groups were randomly chosen. The results revealed that the students in both groups showed Below Average performance in the pretest but manifested a significant difference in the actual mean in the post-test. Both groups displayed significant improvement in solving fundamental operations on fractions. Further, the achievement of students under the Daily Practice Test showed Above Average performance and significantly helped in the improvement of students’ mastery in solving the fundamental operations on fractions. The paper concludes that daily testing has a positive impact on students’ mastery and have shown improvement in their study habits as tested often.
Heritage significances of ancestral houses at the plaza complex of Pototan, Iloilo
Abstract onlyTourism promotion of heritage sites and cultural properties is an important subset of tourist campaign in our country. There is a sizable number of tourists who travel to marvel at things that are vintage and belonging to the past. This study aimed to culturally map the ancestral houses that survived war and times along the Plaza Complex of Pototan, Iloilo with the aimed of promoting these structures as the town’s tourist attraction. This historic town of Pototan which had its share of heroine and visionary leaders boasts of a number of well-preserved pre-war structures and ancestral houses. These ancestral houses are owned by the local elite of Pototan who made a mark in the socio-economic and political life of the town and province. The study showed, that indeed, Pototan possessed such mansions and elaborate houses that had survived through time. While no structures remained intact, the fagade that survived and were rehabilitated by their owners still mirrors the greatness of what was originally built. Each house had a unique story worthy of being told. This study can be a starting point for further detailed study of other researchers who want to explore further.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Tourism Managemen
Genomes of trombidid mites reveal novel predicted allergens and laterally-transferred genes associated with secondary metabolism
Trombidid mites have a unique lifecycle in which only the larval stage is ectoparasitic. In the superfamily Trombiculoidea (“chiggers”), the larvae feed preferentially on vertebrates, including humans. Species in the genus Leptotrombidium are vectors of a potentially fatal bacterial infection, scrub typhus, which affects 1 million people annually. Moreover, chiggers can cause pruritic dermatitis (trombiculiasis) in humans and domesticated animals. In the Trombidioidea (velvet mites), the larvae feed on other arthropods and are potential biological control agents for agricultural pests. Here, we present the first trombidid mites genomes, obtained both for a chigger, Leptotrombidium deliense, and for a velvet mite, Dinothrombium tinctorium

Engineering a replication-incompetent viral vector for the delivery of therapeutic RNA in crustaceans
Viral disease pandemics are a major cause of economic losses in crustacean farming worldwide. While RNA interference (RNAi)-based therapeutics have shown promise at a laboratory scale, without an effective oral delivery platform, RNA-based therapy will not reach its potential against controlling viral diseases in crustaceans. Using a reverse-engineered shrimp RNA virus, Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV), we have developed a shrimp viral vector for delivering an engineered RNA cargo. By replacing the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) protein-coding region of MrNV with a cargo RNA encoding green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a proof-of-concept, we generated a replication-incompetent mutant MrNV(ΔRdRp) carrying the GFP RNA cargo resulting in MrNV(ΔRdRp)-GFP. Upon incorporating MrNV(ΔRdRp)-GFP in the diet of the marine Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei), MrNV(ΔRdRp) particles were visualized in hemocytes demonstrating successful vector internalization. Fluorescence imaging of hemocytes showed the expression of GFP protein and the MrNV capsid RNA (RNA2) as well as the incorporated GFP RNA cargo. Detection of cargo RNA in hepatopancreas and pleopods indicated the systemic spread of the viral vector. The quantitative load of both the MrNV RNA2 and GFP RNA progressively diminished within 8 days postadministration of the viral vector, which indicated a lack of MrNV(ΔRdRp)-GFP replication in shrimp. In addition, no pathological hallmarks of the wild-type MrNV infection were detected using histopathology in the target tissue of treated shrimp. The data unequivocally demonstrated the successful engineering of a replication-incompetent viral vector for RNA delivery, paving the way for the oral delivery of antiviral therapeutics in farmed crustaceans. © The Author(s) 2023.Open access journalThis item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries. Pathogen recognition of a novel C-type lectin from Marsupenaeus japonicus reveals the divergent sugar-binding specificity of QAP motif
C-type lectins (CTLs) are calcium-dependent carbohydrate-binding proteins known to assist the innate immune system as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). The binding specificity of CTLs lies in the motif of their carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD), the tripeptide motifs EPN and QPD bind to mannose and galactose, respectively. However, variants of these motifs were discovered including a QAP sequence reported in shrimp believed to have the same carbohydrate specificity as QPD. Here, we characterized a novel C-type lectin (MjGCTL) possessing a CRD with a QAP motif. The recombinant MjGCTL has a calcium-dependent agglutinating capability against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and its sugar specificity did not involve either mannose or galactose. In an encapsulation assay, agarose beads coated with rMjGCTL were immediately encapsulated from 0 h followed by melanization at 4 h post-incubation with hemocytes. These results confirm that MjGCTL functions as a classical CTL. The structure of QAP motif and carbohydrate-specificity of rMjGCTL was found to be different to both EPN and QPD, suggesting that QAP is a new motif. Furthermore, MjGCTL acts as a PRR binding to hemocytes to activate their adherent state and initiate encapsulation
