The effect of a new drag-law parameterization on ice shelf water plume dynamics
A drag law accounting for Ekman rotation adjacent to a flat, horizontal bou
ndary is proposed for use in
a plume model that is written in terms of the depth-mean velocity. The drag l
aw contains a variable turning
angle between the mean velocity and the drag imposed by the turbulent bound
ary layer. The effect of the
variable turning angle in the drag law is studied for a plume of ice shelf wat
er (ISW) ascending and turning
beneath an Antarctic ice shelf with draft decreasing away from the groundi
ng line. As the ISW plume
ascends the sloping ice shelf–ocean boundary, it can melt the ice shelf, wh
ich alters the buoyancy forcing
driving the plume motion. Under these conditions, the typical turning ang
le is of order
10° over most of
the plume area for a range of drag coefficients (the minus sign arises for th
e Southern Hemisphere). The
rotation of the drag with respect to the mean velocity is found to be signifi
cant if the drag coefficient exceeds
0.003; in this case the plume body propagates farther along and across the b
ase of the ice shelf than a plume
with the standard quadratic drag law with no turning angle
Unity through Diversity: Value-in-Diversity Beliefs, Work Group Diversity, and Group Identification
Research on work group diversity has more or less neglected the possibility that reactions to diversity may be informed by individuals' beliefs about the value of diversity (vs. homogeneity) for their work group. We studied the role of such diversity beliefs as a moderator of the relationship between work group diversity and individuals' identification with the work group across two studies. Study 1 was a cross-sectional survey that focused on gender diversity and gender diversity beliefs. Study 2 was a laboratory experiment in which work group diversity and diversity beliefs were manipulated. Anderson-Yuval approach to the multichannel Kondo problem
We analyze the structure of the perturbation expansion of the general
multichannel Kondo model with channel anisotropic exchange couplings and in the
presence of an external magnetic field, generalizing to this case the
Anderson-Yuval technique. For two channels, we are able to map the Kondo model
onto a generalized resonant level model. Limiting cases in which the equivalent
resonant level model is solvable are identified. The solution correctly
captures the properties of the two channel Kondo model, and also allows an
analytic description of the cross-over from the non Fermi liquid to the Fermi

Can we avoid high coupling?
It is considered good software design practice to organize source code into modules and to favour within-module connections (cohesion) over between-module connections (coupling), leading to the oft-repeated maxim "low coupling/high cohesion". Prior research into network theory and its application to software systems has found evidence that many important properties in real software systems exhibit approximately scale-free structure, including coupling; researchers have claimed that such scale-free structures are ubiquitous. This implies that high coupling must be unavoidable, statistically speaking, apparently contradicting standard ideas about software structure. We present a model that leads to the simple predictions that approximately scale-free structures ought to arise both for between-module connectivity and overall connectivity, and not as the result of poor design or optimization shortcuts. These predictions are borne out by our large-scale empirical study. Hence we conclude that high coupling is not avoidable--and that this is in fact quite reasonable

Are they ‘worth their weight in gold’? Sport for older adults: benefits and barriers of their participation for sporting organisations
The ageing global population has led to an increased focus on health for older adults. However, older adults have not been a specific priority for some sporting organisations (SOs). Thus, there is an emerging opportunity for this age group to be considered within international sport policy. The aim of this study was to understand the benefits and barriers that SOs encounter when engaging older adults. Eight focus group interviews (n = 49) were held with representatives of Australian national sporting organisations (NSOs), and older adults who were either sport club or non-sport club members. The socioecological model domains, interpersonal, organisational and policy, were used as a framework for thematic analysis, and organisational capacity building concepts were utilised to explain the findings. Common perceived benefits included interpersonal benefits (intergenerational opportunities and role models) and organisational benefits (volunteering, financial contributions and maximised facility usage) for engaging older adults. Common perceived barriers included interpersonal barriers (competing priorities and perceived societal expectations), organisational barriers (lack of appropriate playing opportunities, lack of facility access and lack of club capacity) and policy barriers (strategic organisational focus on children and elite sport and risk management). Whilst participation in sport is not common for older adults, their involvement can be invaluable for sport clubs. It is not anticipated that any policy focus on older adults will significantly increase active participation for this age group. However, any increase in older adults’ sport participation either through actively playing, supporting family and friends and/or volunteering will contribute to the positive health of individuals, sport clubs and the community.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Confined granular packings: structure, stress, and forces
The structure and stresses of static granular packs in cylindrical containers
are studied using large-scale discrete element molecular dynamics simulations
in three dimensions. We generate packings by both pouring and sedimentation and
examine how the final state depends on the method of construction. The vertical
stress becomes depth-independent for deep piles and we compare these stress
depth-profiles to the classical Janssen theory. The majority of the tangential
forces for particle-wall contacts are found to be close to the Coulomb failure
criterion, in agreement with the theory of Janssen, while particle-particle
contacts in the bulk are far from the Coulomb criterion. In addition, we show
that a linear hydrostatic-like region at the top of the packings unexplained by
the Janssen theory arises because most of the particle-wall tangential forces
in this region are far from the Coulomb yield criterion. The distributions of
particle-particle and particle-wall contact forces exhibit

A multi-photon Stokes-parameter invariant for entangled states
We consider the Minkowskian norm of the n-photon Stokes tensor, a scalar
invariant under the group realized by the transformations of stochastic local
quantum operations and classical communications (SLOCC). This invariant is
offered as a candidate entanglement measure for n-qubit states and discussed in
relation to measures of quantum state entanglement for certain important
classes of two-qubit and three-qubit systems. This invariant can be directly
estimated via a quantum network, obviating the need to perform laborious
quantum state tomography. We also show that this invariant directly captures

Entanglement, Mixedness, and Spin-Flip Symmetry in Multiple-Qubit Systems
A relationship between a recently introduced multipartite entanglement
measure, state mixedness, and spin-flip symmetry is established for any finite
number of qubits. It is also shown that, within those classes of states
invariant under the spin-flip transformation, there is a complementarity
relation between multipartite entanglement and mixedness. A number of example
