A study of shock impacts and vibration dose values onboard highspeed marine craft

    No full text
The shocks and impacts encountered on small high-speed craft exceed the limits set for safe working practice according to current standards. European legislation regarding the exposure to vibration will have far reaching effects on the operators of such craft with respect to the safety of their employees. This paper sets out to highlight the vibration dose values that can be expected during typical transits onboard high-speed craft and attempts to clarify some of the controversy currently surrounding vibration dose measurement in such circumstances. In order to relate vibration dosage to the impacts encountered and to boat motion, an algorithm was developed that identifies the timing and magnitude of impacts

Heave and pitch motions in shallow water including the effect of forward speed

The problem of small heave and pitch motions of a slender ship in shallow water including the effect of forward speed is analysed using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Formulae valid to first order in slenderness are given for the added-mass and damping coefficients in terms of the frequency and subcritical Froude number

Keeping a Clean Heart (Chapter 7 of For Today: A Prayer When Life Gets Messy)

Excerpt: When I heard that some of the kids at school received an allowance, money their parents actually gave to them for no particular reason other than to do a few chores around the house, I could hardly believe it. It seemed too good to be true. I never received an allowance, and the idea of having some spending money of any kind was usually out of the question. Once in a while, my mother would give my brothers and me a quarter each to go to the municipal swimming pool if we hoed five rows of corn in the garden, but that was the extent of it. Honestly, we had a loving and supportive family life and there was always good food on the table and clean clothes in the closet, but there wasn\u27t any extra money for extravagances like allowances. We lived paycheck to paycheck, and my parents fretted far more than I knew about running out of money before the end of the month. So, I decided to earn my own spending money. At the age of thirteen, I became an independent businessman- peddling papers for the Saginaw News

If titan prisons are back on the agenda, we must know more about the one we already have

Last week the government announced plans to conduct feasibility work on what would be Britain’s largest prison, citing a need for new capacity and a concern to close older and more expensive facilities. The government is pointing to HMP Oakwood, the 1600 place G4S prison which opened last year, as an illustration of the efficiencies achieved by prisons of this size. However Rob Allen questions whether the data for Oakwood is as clear as the government has tried to suggest

    Cognitive Relatives and Moral Relations

The close kinship between humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans is a central theme among participants in the debate about human treatment of the other apes. Empathy is probably the single most important determinant of actual human moral behavior, including the treatment of nonhuman animals. Given the applied nature of questions about the treatment of captive apes, it is entirely appropriate that the close relationship between us should be highlighted. But the role that relatedness should play in ethical theory is less clear. To the extent that legal and regulatory challenges to keeping apes in captivity are likely to be based on principles of theory, it is important to understand what roles evolutionary theory can play in deriving such principles. The development of ethically correct policies for captivity of animals will depend on taking into account both species-specific and individual differences in the ways that individuals perceive and conceptualize the spaces in which they live, and the choices with which they are presented. A fully evolutionary approach to cognition, a cognitive ethology, that is not just limited to the great apes or to primates is the best hope we have for understanding such perceptions and conceptions

The Asymptotic Couple of the Field of Logarithmic Transseries

The derivation on the differential-valued field Tlog\mathbb{T}_{\log} of logarithmic transseries induces on its value group Γlog\Gamma_{\log} a certain map ψ\psi. The structure (Γlog,ψ)(\Gamma_{\log},\psi) is a divisible asymptotic couple. We prove that the theory Tlog=Th(Γlog,ψ)T_{\log} = {\rm Th}(\Gamma_{\log},\psi) admits elimination of quantifiers in a natural first-order language. All models (Γ,ψ)(\Gamma,\psi) of TlogT_{\log} have an important discrete subset Ψ:=ψ(Γ{0})\Psi:=\psi(\Gamma\setminus\{0\}). We give explicit descriptions of all definable functions on Ψ\Psi and prove that Ψ\Psi is stably embedded in Γ\Gamma.Comment: 24 page

On automorphic points in polarized deformation rings

For a fixed mod pp automorphic Galois representation, pp-adic automorphic Galois representations lifting it determine points in universal deformation space. In the case of modular forms and under some technical conditions, B\"{o}ckle showed that every component of deformation space contains a smooth modular point, which then implies their Zariski density when coupled with the infinite fern of Gouv\^{e}a-Mazur. We generalize B\"{o}ckle's result to the context of polarized Galois representations for CM fields, and to two dimensional Galois representations for totally real fields. More specifically, under assumptions necessary to apply a small R=TR = \mathbb{T} theorem and an assumption on the local mod pp representation, we prove that every irreducible component of the universal polarized deformation space contains an automorphic point. When combined with work of Chenevier, this implies new results on the Zariski density of automorphic points in polarized deformation space in dimension three
