The Quiescent Spectrum of the AM CVn star CP Eri
We used the 6.5m MMT to obtain a spectrum of the AM CVn star CP Eri in
quiescence. The spectrum is dominated by He I emission lines, which are clearly
double peaked with a peak-to-peak separation of ~1900 km/s. The spectrum is
similar to that of the longer period AM CVn systems GP Com and CE 315, linking
the short and the long period AM CVn systems. In contrast with GP Com and CE
315, the spectrum of CP Eri does not show a central 'spike' in the line
profiles, but it does show lines of SiII in emission. The presence of these
lines indicates that the material being transferred is of higher metallicity
than in GP Com and CE 315, which, combined with the low proper motion of the
system, probably excludes a halo origin of the progenitor of CP Eri. We
constrain the primary mass to M_1>0.27 M_sun and the orbital inclination to 33
degr < i < 80 degr. The presence of the He I lines in emission opens up the
possibility for phase resolved spectroscopic studies which allows a
determination of the system parameters and a detailed study of helium accretion

A Population of Faint Non-Transient Low Mass Black Hole Binaries
We study the thermal and viscous stability of accretion flows in Low Mass
Black Hole Binaries (LMBHBs). We consider a model in which an inner
advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) is surrounded by a geometrically thin
accretion disk, the transition between the two zones occurring at a radius
R_tr. In all the known LMBHBs, R_tr appears to be such that the outer disks
could suffer from a global thermal-viscous instability. This instability is
likely to cause the transient behavior of these systems. However, in most
cases, if R_tr were slightly larger than the estimated values, the systems
would be globally stable. This suggests that a population of faint persistent
LMBHBs with globally stable outer disks could be present in the Galaxy. Such
LMBHBs would be hard to detect because they would lack large amplitude
outbursts, and because their ADAF zones would have very low radiative
efficiencies, making the systems very dim. We present model spectra of such

Simultaneous optical polarimetry and X-ray data of the near synchronous polar RX J2115-5840
We present simultaneous optical polarimetry and X-ray data of the near
synchronous polar RX J2115-5840. We model the polarisation data using the
Stokes imaging technique of Potter et al. We find that the data are best
modelled using a relatively high binary inclination and a small angle between
the magnetic and spin axes. We find that for all spin-orbit beat phases, a
significant proportion of the accretion flow is directed onto the lower
hemisphere of the white dwarf, producing negative circular polarisation. Only
for a small fraction of the beat cycle is a proportion of the flow directed
onto the upper hemisphere. However, the accretion flow never occurs near the
upper magnetic pole, whatever the orientation of the magnetic poles. This
indicates the presence of a non-dipole field with the field strength at the
upper pole significantly higher. We find that the brightest parts of the hard
X-ray emitting region and the cyclotron region are closely coincident.Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS 2 March 200
The component masses of the cataclysmic variable V347 Puppis
We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the double-lined eclipsing cataclysmic variable V347 Pup (=LB 1800). There is evidence of irradiation on the inner hemisphere of the secondary star, which we correct for using a model to give a secondary-star radial velocity of KR= 198 ± 5 km s−1. The rotational velocity of the secondary star in V347 Pup is found to be v sin i= 131 ± 5 km s−1 and the system inclination is i= 840 ± 23. From these parameters we obtain masses of M1= 0.63 ± 0.04 M⊙ for the white dwarf primary and M2= 0.52 ± 0.06 M⊙ for the M0.5V secondary star, giving a mass ratio of q= 0.83 ± 0.05. On the basis of the component masses, and the spectral type and radius of the secondary star in V347 Pup, we find tentative evidence for an evolved companion. V347 Pup shows many of the characteristics of the SW Sex stars, exhibiting single-peaked emission lines, high-velocity S-wave components and phase-offsets in the radial velocity curve. We find spiral arms in the accretion disc of V347 Pup and measure the disc radius to be close to the maximum allowed in a pressureless disc
The LMC supersoft X-ray binary RX J0513.9-6951
A detailed analysis of simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of the optical counterpart of the LMC "supersoft" X-ray source RX J0513.9-6951 (identified with HV 5682) is presented. The spectrum is dominated by He II emission lines and H + He II blends; no He I is observed but several higher ionization emission features, especially O VI (3811, 3834, and 5290A) are prominent. Radial velocity measurements suggest a binary period of 0.76 days. If the small velocity amplitude, K~11 km/s, is interpreted as orbital motion, this implies that the binary system contains a somewhat evolved star plus a relatively massive compact object, viewed nearly pole-on. No orbital photometric variations were found, although irregular brightness changes of ~0.3 mag occurred. Unusual emission lines are observed which cannot be identified except as high velocity (4000 km/s) bipolar outflows or jets. These outflows are seen in H and He II at the same positive and negative velocities. They were relatively stable for periods of ~5 days, but their velocities appear to have been ~250 km/s smaller in 1992 than in 1993 or 1994
The masses of the cataclysmic variables AC Cancri and V363 Aurigae
We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the double-lined eclipsing cataclysmic variables AC Cnc and V363 Aur (= Lanning 10). There is evidence of irradiation on the inner hemisphere of the secondary star in both systems, which we correct for using a model that reproduces the observations remarkably well. We find the radial velocity of the secondary star in AC Cnc to be KR= 176 ± 3 km s−1 and its rotational velocity to be v sin i= 135 ± 3 km s−1. From these parameters we obtain masses of M1= 0.76 ± 0.03 M⊙ for the white-dwarf primary and M2= 0.77 ± 0.05 M⊙ for the K2 ± 1V secondary star, giving a mass ratio of q= 1.02 ± 0.04. We measure the radial and rotational velocities of the G7 ± 2V secondary star in V363 Aur to be KR= 168 ± 5 km s−1 and v sin i= 143 ± 5 km s−1, respectively. The component masses of V363 Aur are M1= 0.90 ± 0.06 M⊙ and M2= 1.06 ± 0.11 M⊙, giving a mass ratio of q= 1.17 ± 0.07. The mass ratios for AC Cnc and V363 Aur fall within the theoretical limits for dynamically and thermally stable mass transfer. Both systems are similar to the SW Sex stars, exhibiting single-peaked emission lines with transient absorption features, high-velocity S-wave components and phase-offsets in their radial-velocity curves. The Balmer lines in V363 Aur show a rapid increase in flux around phase 0 followed by a rapid decrease, which we attribute to the eclipse of an optically thick region at the centre of the disc. This model could also account for the behaviour of other SW Sex stars where the Balmer lines show only a shallow eclipse compared to the continuum
Defining and evaluating novel procedures for involving patients in Core Outcome Set research: creating a meaningful long list of candidate outcome domains
Background
Tinnitus is a complex audiological condition affecting many different domains of everyday life. Clinical trials of tinnitus interventions measure and report those outcome domains inconsistently and this hinders direct comparison between study findings. To address this problem, an ongoing project is developing a Core Outcome Set; an agreed list of outcome domains to be measured and reported in all future trials. Part of this project uses a consensus methodology (‘Delphi’ survey), whereby all relevant stakeholders identify important and critical outcome domains from a long list of candidates. This article addresses a gap in the patient involvement literature by describing and reflecting on our involvement of patients to create a meaningful long list of candidate outcome domains.
Methods
Two Public Research Partners with lived experience of tinnitus reviewed an initial list of 124 outcome domains over two face-to-face workshops. With the Study Management Team, they interpreted each candidate outcome domain and generated a plain language description. Following this, the domain names and descriptions underwent an additional lay review by 14 patients and 5 clinical experts, via an online survey platform.
Results
Insights gained from the workshops and survey feedback prompted substantial, unforeseen modifications to the long list. These included the reduction of the number of outcome domains (from 124 to 66) via the exclusion of broad concepts and consolidation of equivalent domains or domains outside the scope of the study. Reviewers also applied their lived experience of tinnitus to bring clarity and relevance to domain names and plain language descriptions. Four impacts on the Delphi survey were observed: recruitment exceeded the target by 171%, there were equivalent numbers of patient and professional participants (n=358 and n=312, respectively), feedback was mostly positive, and retention was high (87%).
Conclusions
Patient involvement was an integral and transformative step of the study design process. Patient involvement was impactful because the online Delphi survey was successful in recruiting and retaining participants, and there were many comments about a positive participatory experience. Seven general methodological features are highlighted which fit with general principles of good patient involvement. These can benefit other Core Outcome Set developers
Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the evolution of form and function in the amniote jaw.
The amniote jaw complex is a remarkable amalgamation of derivatives from distinct embryonic cell lineages. During development, the cells in these lineages experience concerted movements, migrations, and signaling interactions that take them from their initial origins to their final destinations and imbue their derivatives with aspects of form including their axial orientation, anatomical identity, size, and shape. Perturbations along the way can produce defects and disease, but also generate the variation necessary for jaw evolution and adaptation. We focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate form in the amniote jaw complex, and that enable structural and functional integration. Special emphasis is placed on the role of cranial neural crest mesenchyme (NCM) during the species-specific patterning of bone, cartilage, tendon, muscle, and other jaw tissues. We also address the effects of biomechanical forces during jaw development and discuss ways in which certain molecular and cellular responses add adaptive and evolutionary plasticity to jaw morphology. Overall, we highlight how variation in molecular and cellular programs can promote the phenomenal diversity and functional morphology achieved during amniote jaw evolution or lead to the range of jaw defects and disease that affect the human condition
