Growth of children receiving a dehydrated potato-soy protein concentrate or corn-soy blend as part of a food aid program in Northern Senegal
Rations distributed by food aid programs are intended to improve the growth of undernourished children. In practice, food programs target individual children and provide a supplement to the family that is intended to increase the energy and nutrient intake of undernourished children. Multiple food rations are available yet few studies have compared their differential effect on the growth of children. The objective of the study was to compare growth in undernourished Senegalese children who received a newly developed dehydrated potato-soy protein concentrate blend (PSB) to those supplemented with the currently available corn-soy blend (CSB). The first child at each site was randomly assigned to receive PSB or CSB and subsequent children alternately received PSB or CSB. Eligibility for obtaining the food ration was basedon criteria determined by the USAID (P.L. 480) Title II Food Aid Program. Children received iso-caloric amounts of the two supplements each month (23,000kcals). Weight, height and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) were taken over a fourmonth period. Z-scores were calculated for weight-for-age (WAZ), weight-for-height (WHZ) and for length/height-for-age measures (HAZ).The study was conducted at 7 clinics which served as food distribution sites in northern Senegal. The study enrolled348 children 18-56 months old with a weight-for-age z-score below the yellow zone of the locally available growth chart (equivalent to WAZ < -1.0). WAZ and HAZ significantly increased over time but there was no difference between the two ration groups. In a subset of 280 children (145 PSB, 135 CSB) who attended all four appointments and received the full complement of ration, there was significant and equivalent increase for both groups in WAZ and WHZ. These findings indicate thatchildren participating in the food aid program significantly improved their growth over a four-month period. Using the new PSB as a ration had the same impact on growth as the standard CSB and required less fuel to prepare

During the same time frame of the great depression, 1936, Stephen Jokel received a commission from an unknown source to create the Orchard Theater, an entertainment center to display musicals and other live performances. Not much is known about where or why the Orchard Theater was commissioned, but the project never came to fruition. It is possible that like the Willow Beach Amusement Park, this building was an attempt to capitalize on the entertainment market during the depression era.

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension in the Setting of Secondary Erythrocytosis Associated with Eisenmenger's Syndrome
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is defined as increased intracranial pressure with normal cerebrospinal fluid contents, in the absence of an intracranial mass, hydrocephalus, or other identifiable cause. We report a case of IIH in the setting of secondary erythrocytosis associated with cyanotic congenital heart disease

The great depression was one of the worst times in US history. It was during the late 1920s and early 1930s, and families were in desperate financial shape for years to come. Due to the crash of the stock market in 1929, the family budget of the average American diminished significantly. Families now had very little money to spend on anything besides the essentials. Yet in the very year of the crash, the Willow Beach Amusement Park was built. Commissioned by Jimmy Hayes, constructed by The Jokel and Lange architectural firm of Toledo, this family fun park was home to many rides such as an auto race area, a roller coaster, and more. The park eventually closed down in 1949, not long after a teenager fell to her death from the roller coaster. The park was built to try and capitalize on the “free real estate” of commercial businesses during the depression. It's impossible to know whether or not the park would still be open today if not for the fatal accident. In the area where the park once stood is Cullen Park, home to a fishing and boating area
Macula-Sparing rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: Is emergent surgery necessary?
The status of the macula is a significant factor in determining final visual outcomes in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and should be considered in the timing of surgical repair. Several studies have shown that macula-involving RRDs attain similar visual and anatomic outcomes when surgery is performed within seven days as compared to emergent surgery (within 24 hours). In contrast, surgery prior to macular detachment in macula-sparing RRDs generally yields the best visual outcomes. In the case of macula-sparing RRDs, it is not clear how long the macula may remain attached, therefore, standard practice dictates emergent surgery. Timing of presentation, examination findings, case complexity, co-existing medical conditions, surgeon expertise, and timing and quality of access to operating facilities and staff, however, should all be considered in determining whether a macula-sparing RRD requires immediate intervention or if equivalent visual and possibly better overall outcomes can be achieved with scheduled surgery within an appropriate time frame
