Computing Hypercircles by Moving Hyperplanes
Let K be a field of characteristic zero, alpha algebraic of degree n over K.
Given a proper parametrization psi of a rational curve C, we present a new
algorithm to compute the hypercircle associated to the parametrization psi. As
a consequence, we can decide if the curve C is defined over K and, if not, to
compute the minimum field of definition of C containing K. The algorithm
exploits the conjugate curves of C but avoids computation in the normal closure
of K(alpha) over K.Comment: 16 page
High strength stainless steel 14301 for prestressed concrete structures protection
High Strength Stainless Steels (HSSS) are being developed with the aim to improve corrosion resistance of prestressed concrete structures in aggressive environments. In the present paper focus is given to mechanical and corrosion performance of a HSSS type 14301. The ability of passivation in alkaline media and the risk of local corrosion (pitting) in presence of chlorides, has been determined. Besides, the response of the stainless steel submitted to mechanical strains similar to those in service is considered with respect to the risk of corrosion, Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE). The cold-drawn HSSS 14301 shows higher tolerance to chloride ion than conventional prestressing steel. The local corrosion becomes significant for chloride contents above 0.75 M. The applied load moves pitting corrosion initiation at lower concentrations of chlorides. The pitting enhances risk for SCC developing, although the steel is more resistance to HE in comparison with conventional presstressing ste
Recognition of facial expression of emotions in Parkinson’s disease: a theoretical review
programas que se aplicanEmotional facial expression is a basic guide during social interaction and, therefore, alterations in their
expression or recognition are important limitations for communication.
Aim. To examine facial expression recognition abilities and their possible impairment in Parkinson’s disease.
Development. First, we review the studies on this topic which have not found entirely similar results. Second, we analyze
the factors that may explain these discrepancies and, in particular, as third objective, we consider the relationship between
emotional recognition problems and cognitive impairment associated with the disease. Finally, we propose alternatives
strategies for the development of studies that could clarify the state of these abilities in Parkinson’s disease.
Conclusions. Most studies suggest deficits in facial expression recognition, especially in those with negative emotional
content. However, it is possible that these alterations are related to those that also appear in the course of the disease in
other perceptual and executive processes. To advance in this issue, we consider necessary to design emotional recognition
studies implicating differentially the executive or visuospatial processes, and/or contrasting cognitive abilities with facial
expressions and non emotional stimuli. The precision of the status of these abilities, as well as increase our knowledge of
the functional consequences of the characteristic brain damage in the disease, may indicate if we should pay special
attention in their rehabilitation inside the programs implementedProyecto ref. PSI2009-09067, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación
Information activity in digital media: will print newspapers survive without advertising?
This crisis has accelerated printed press’ process to become online. ICT have transformed the information system both economically and productively. The dramatic decline in advertising revenues shakes the business model followed so far by media companies. We need new ways of financing, to allowe media survive. There are cases of new systems adopted for information activity to obtain profitability: from crowdfunding to ecommerce, supported in media audiences. All this makes us question the future of the media, in the way as they have been understood as information companies untill now
The AMBRE Project: Stellar parameterisation of the ESO:FEROS archived spectra
The AMBRE Project is a collaboration between the European Southern
Observatory (ESO) and the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur (OCA) that has been
established in order to carry out the determination of stellar atmospheric
parameters for the archived spectra of four ESO spectrographs.
The analysis of the FEROS archived spectra for their stellar parameters
(effective temperatures, surface gravities, global metallicities, alpha element
to iron ratios and radial velocities) has been completed in the first phase of
the AMBRE Project. From the complete ESO:FEROS archive dataset that was
received, a total of 21551 scientific spectra have been identified, covering
the period 2005 to 2010. These spectra correspond to ~6285 stars.
The determination of the stellar parameters was carried out using the stellar
parameterisation algorithm, MATISSE (MATrix Inversion for Spectral SynthEsis),
which has been developed at OCA to be used in the analysis of large scale
spectroscopic studies in galactic archaeology. An analysis pipeline has been
constructed that integrates spectral reduction and radial velocity correction
procedures with MATISSE in order to automatically determine the stellar
parameters of the FEROS spectra.
Stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [M/H] and [alpha/Fe]) were
determined for 6508 (30.2%) of the FEROS archived spectra (~3087 stars). Radial
velocities were determined for 11963 (56%) of the archived spectra. 2370 (11%)
spectra could not be analysed within the pipeline. 12673 spectra (58.8%) were
analysed in the pipeline but their parameters were discarded based on quality
criteria and error analysis determined within the automated process. The
majority of these rejected spectra were found to have broad spectral features
indicating that they may be hot and/or fast rotating stars, which are not
considered within the adopted reference synthetic spectra grid of FGKM stars.Comment: 28 pages, 28 figures, 9 table
Evolution in the Translation of Humor in the Character of Tony Stark in Iron Man and Spiderman: Homecoming
Translation has been present from the beginning of times, when two cultures tried to
communicate with each other and their languages were different, they needed a way of
doing it. In every culture there are instances of humor, as it is part of the human nature.
So, the translation of humor is an important field that needs to be studied more in depth,
as there is only a small number of works dealing with it. In this work, we aim to study
some aspects of this field by analyzing the dubbed versions of two movies. We will focus
on what has been translated and how they have done it. Then, analyze the translations
from a diachronic perspective to see the evolution that the translation of humor has
suffered.

There are many international meetings and consensus about the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint
infection. However, there aren´t consensus about the most appropriate test to identify the prophylactically microorganisms
responsible of infection. This paper is a retrospective study of 1.022 patients with 1.045 total
hip replacements between 2009-2013. We analyzed the results of intraoperative culture samples, identified the
microorganisms and the patients with clinical infection. We calculated the sensitivity, specificity, positive and
negative predictive values of the test. The patients with infectious were identified and classified according to
criteria Tsukayama and treatment performed. We conclude that intraoperative culture samples in primary hip
arthroplasty to try to advance the diagnosis of periprosthetic infection are an ineffective and inefficient practice
and we have to stop doing it
Reformulating Pro-Oxidant Microglia in Neurodegeneration
In neurodegenerative diseases, microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and oxidative stress are central events. Recent genome-wide transcriptomic analyses of microglial cells under different disease conditions have uncovered a new subpopulation named disease-associated microglia (DAM). These studies have challenged the classical view of the microglia polarization state's proinflammatory M1 (classical activation) and immunosuppressive M2 (alternative activation). Molecular signatures of DAM and proinflammatory microglia (highly pro-oxidant) have shown clear differences, yet a partial overlapping gene profile is evident between both phenotypes. The switch activation of homeostatic microglia into reactive microglia relies on the selective activation of key surface receptors involved in the maintenance of brain homeostasis (a.k.a. pattern recognition receptors, PRRs). Two relevant PRRs are toll-like receptors (TLRs) and triggering receptors expressed on myeloid cells-2 (TREM2), whose selective activation is believed to generate either a proinflammatory or a DAM phenotype, respectively. However, the recent identification of endogenous disease-related ligands, which bind to and activate both TLRs and TREM2, anticipates the existence of rather complex microglia responses. Examples of potential endogenous dual ligands include amyloid β, galectin-3, and apolipoprotein E. These pleiotropic ligands induce a microglia polarization that is more complicated than initially expected, suggesting the possibility that different microglia subtypes may coexist. This review highlights the main microglia polarization states under disease conditions and their leading role orchestrating oxidative stress
