Altered serological and cellular reactivity to H-2 antigens after target cell infection with vaccinia virus
MICE generate cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) which are able to lyse virus infected target cells in vitro after infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) and pox-viruses1−3. CTL kill syngeneic and semiallogenic infected cells but not allogenic infected targets. Target cell lysis in these systems seems to be restricted by H-2 antigens, especially by the K or D end of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). In experiments where virus specific sensitised lymphocytes kill virus infected allogenic target cells4 the effector lymphocytes have not been characterised exactly. Recent investigations suggest that the active cell in this assay, at least in the measles infection, is a non-thymus derived cell (H. Kreth, personal communication). An H-2 restriction of cell mediated cytolysis (CMC) to trinitrophenol (TNP)-modified lymphocytes has also been described5. Zinkernagel and Doherty6 postulated that the CTL is directed against syngeneic H-2 antigens and viral antigens and they suggested an alteration of H-2 induced by the LCMV infection. Earlier7 we found a close topological relationship between H-2 antigens and the target antigen(s) responsible for CMC in the vaccinia system. Here we report experiments which were carried out to prove alteration of H-2 after infection of L-929 fibroblasts with vaccinia virus
The Iterative Signature Algorithm for the analysis of large scale gene expression data
We present a new approach for the analysis of genome-wide expression data.
Our method is designed to overcome the limitations of traditional techniques,
when applied to large-scale data. Rather than alloting each gene to a single
cluster, we assign both genes and conditions to context-dependent and
potentially overlapping transcription modules. We provide a rigorous definition
of a transcription module as the object to be retrieved from the expression
data. An efficient algorithm, that searches for the modules encoded in the data
by iteratively refining sets of genes and conditions until they match this
definition, is established. Each iteration involves a linear map, induced by
the normalized expression matrix, followed by the application of a threshold
function. We argue that our method is in fact a generalization of Singular
Value Decomposition, which corresponds to the special case where no threshold
is applied. We show analytically that for noisy expression data our approach
leads to better classification due to the implementation of the threshold. This
result is confirmed by numerical analyses based on in-silico expression data.

PANIC: the new panoramic NIR camera for Calar Alto
PANIC is a wide-field NIR camera, which is currently under development for
the Calar Alto observatory (CAHA) in Spain. It uses a mosaic of four Hawaii-2RG
detectors and covers the spectral range from 0.8-2.5 micron(z to K-band). The
field-of-view is 30x30 arcmin. This instrument can be used at the 2.2m
telescope (0.45arcsec/pixel, 0.5x0.5 degree FOV) and at the 3.5m telescope
(0.23arcsec/pixel, 0.25x0.25 degree FOV). The operating temperature is about
77K, achieved by liquid Nitrogen cooling. The cryogenic optics has three flat
folding mirrors with diameters up to 282 mm and nine lenses with diameters
between 130 mm and 255 mm. A compact filter unit can carry up to 19 filters
distributed over four filter wheels. Narrow band (1%) filters can be used. The
instrument has a diameter of 1.1 m and it is about 1 m long. The weight limit
of 400 kg at the 2.2m telescope requires a light-weight cryostat design. The
aluminium vacuum vessel and radiation shield have wall thicknesses of only 6 mm

Personhood, consciousness, and god : how to be a proper pantheist
© Springer Nature B.V. 2018In this paper I develop a theory of personhood which leaves open the possibility of construing the universe as a person. If successful, it removes one bar to endorsing pantheism. I do this by examining a rising school of thought on personhood, on which persons, or selves, are understood as identical to episodes of consciousness. Through a critique of this experiential approach to personhood, I develop a theory of self as constituted of qualitative mental contents, but where these contents are also capable of unconscious existence. On this theory, though we can be conscious of our selves, consciousness turns out to be inessential to personhood. Fidelity trade-off for finite ensembles of identically prepared qubits
We calculate the trade-off between the quality of estimating the quantum
state of an ensemble of identically prepared qubits and the minimum level of
disturbance that has to be introduced by this procedure in quantum mechanics.
The trade-off is quantified using two mean fidelities: the operation fidelity
which characterizes the average resemblance of the final qubit state to the
initial one, and the estimation fidelity describing the quality of the obtained
estimate. We analyze properties of quantum operations saturating the
achievability bound for the operation fidelity versus the estimation fidelity,
which allows us to reduce substantially the complexity of the problem of
finding the trade-off curve. The reduced optimization problem has the form of
an eigenvalue problem for a set of tridiagonal matrices, and it can be easily

Heart rate variability and target organ damage in hypertensive patients
Background:
We evaluated the association between linear standard Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measures and vascular, renal and cardiac target organ damage (TOD).
Methods:
A retrospective analysis was performed including 200 patients registered in the Regione Campania network (aged 62.4 ± 12, male 64%). HRV analysis was performed by 24-h holter ECG. Renal damage was assessed by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), vascular damage by carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), and cardiac damage by left ventricular mass index.
Results:
Significantly lower values of the ratio of low to high frequency power (LF/HF) were found in the patients with moderate or severe eGFR (p-value < 0.001). Similarly, depressed values of indexes of the overall autonomic modulation on heart were found in patients with plaque compared to those with a normal IMT (p-value <0.05). These associations remained significant after adjustment for other factors known to contribute to the development of target organ damage, such as age. Moreover, depressed LF/HF was found also in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy but this association was not significant after adjustment for other factors.
Conclusions:
Depressed HRV appeared to be associated with vascular and renal TOD, suggesting the involvement of autonomic imbalance in the TOD. However, as the mechanisms by which abnormal autonomic balance may lead to TOD, and, particularly, to renal organ damage are not clearly known, further prospective studies with longitudinal design are needed to determine the association between HRV and the development of TOD
Social interaction, noise and antibiotic-mediated switches in the intestinal microbiota
The intestinal microbiota plays important roles in digestion and resistance
against entero-pathogens. As with other ecosystems, its species composition is
resilient against small disturbances but strong perturbations such as
antibiotics can affect the consortium dramatically. Antibiotic cessation does
not necessarily restore pre-treatment conditions and disturbed microbiota are
often susceptible to pathogen invasion. Here we propose a mathematical model to
explain how antibiotic-mediated switches in the microbiota composition can
result from simple social interactions between antibiotic-tolerant and
antibiotic-sensitive bacterial groups. We build a two-species (e.g. two
functional-groups) model and identify regions of domination by
antibiotic-sensitive or antibiotic-tolerant bacteria, as well as a region of
multistability where domination by either group is possible. Using a new
framework that we derived from statistical physics, we calculate the duration
of each microbiota composition state. This is shown to depend on the balance
between random fluctuations in the bacterial densities and the strength of
microbial interactions. The singular value decomposition of recent metagenomic
data confirms our assumption of grouping microbes as antibiotic-tolerant or
antibiotic-sensitive in response to a single antibiotic. Our methodology can be
extended to multiple bacterial groups and thus it provides an ecological

In vivo efficacy of carvacrol on Campylobacter jejuni prevalence in broiler chickens during an entire fattening period
Carvacrol, a primary constituent of plant essential oils (EOs), and its antimicrobial activity have been the subject of many in vitro studies. Due to an increasing demand for alternative antimicrobials and an emerging number of antibiotic resistant bacteria, the use of essential oils has played a major role in many recent approaches to reduce Campylobacter colonization in poultry before slaughter age. For that purpose, the reducing effect of carvacrol on Campylobacter jejuni prevalence in broilers was determined in vivo in an experimental broiler chicken model during an entire fattening period. Carvacrol was added to the feed in a concentration of 120 mg/kg feed four days post hatch until the end of the trial. In this study, we demonstrated a statistically significant decrease of C. jejuni counts by 1.17 decadic logarithm (log10) most probable number (MPN)/g in cloacal swabs during starter and grower periods (corresponding to a broilers age between 1 and 28 days). Similar results were observed for colon enumeration at the end of the trial where C. jejuni counts were significantly reduced by 1.25 log10 MPN/g. However, carvacrol did not successfully reduce Campylobacter cecal colonization in 33-day-old broilers
Robust Detection of Hierarchical Communities from Escherichia coli Gene Expression Data
Determining the functional structure of biological networks is a central goal
of systems biology. One approach is to analyze gene expression data to infer a
network of gene interactions on the basis of their correlated responses to
environmental and genetic perturbations. The inferred network can then be
analyzed to identify functional communities. However, commonly used algorithms
can yield unreliable results due to experimental noise, algorithmic
stochasticity, and the influence of arbitrarily chosen parameter values.
Furthermore, the results obtained typically provide only a simplistic view of
the network partitioned into disjoint communities and provide no information of
the relationship between communities. Here, we present methods to robustly
detect coregulated and functionally enriched gene communities and demonstrate
their application and validity for Escherichia coli gene expression data.
Applying a recently developed community detection algorithm to the network of
interactions identified with the context likelihood of relatedness (CLR)
method, we show that a hierarchy of network communities can be identified.
These communities significantly enrich for gene ontology (GO) terms, consistent
with them representing biologically meaningful groups. Further, analysis of the
most significantly enriched communities identified several candidate new
regulatory interactions. The robustness of our methods is demonstrated by
showing that a core set of functional communities is reliably found when
artificial noise, modeling experimental noise, is added to the data. We find
that noise mainly acts conservatively, increasing the relatedness required for
a network link to be reliably assigned and decreasing the size of the core
