    Analysis of Morphometric Characteristics of Different Populations of Tabanus bromius Linne 1758 (Diptera: Tabanidae)

    WOS: 000409565700033Horse flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) are known world-wide as important mechanical vectors of viruses, bacteria, protozoans, and helminths that cause diseases in wild and domestic animals. Tabanus bromius L. is common species worldwide, which shows considerable variation in the size of the body due to its adaptation to different habitats. In this paper, thirteen populations of this species, which are collected from different habitats and ecological regions (forests, sea sides and alpines) at altitudes between 5-2200 meters in Anatolia and Aegean were compared using geometric morphometries. When the wing shape differences of populations were analyzed by UPGM, the cluster analyses recognized two main groups of populations, one group comprising Afyon (890 m), Amasya (800 m), Artvin (960 m), Bolu (1200 m), Eskisehir (1170 m), Kastamonu (600 m) and Zonguldak (1050 m) while the second group comprised Bursa (700 m), Giresun (150 m), Sinop (160 m), Samsun (340 m), Karabiik (230 m) and Trabzon (200 m).project of Anadolu University [BAP-1502F074]This research has been supported by project of Anadolu University numbered BAP-1502F074

    Empiric antibiotic therapy in acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections and fluoroquinolone resistance: a prospective observational study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aims of this study were to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of urinary isolates from community acquired acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTI) and to evaluate which antibiotics were empirically prescribed in the outpatient management of uUTI.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Among the patients which were admitted to outpatient clinics of Ankara University Medical Faculty, Ibni-Sina Hospital during 2005-2006, a total of 429 women between the age of 18 and 65 years old who were clinically diagnosed with uUTI and to whom prescribed empirical antibiotics were enrolled in this prospective observational study. Patients' demographical data, urine culture results, resistance rates to antimicrobial agents and prescribed empiric antimicrobial therapy were analyzed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Totally 390 (90.9%) patients among all study population were requested for urine culture by their physicians. 150 (38.5%) of these urine cultures were positive. The most common isolated uropathogen was <it>Escherichia coli (E. coli) </it>(71.3%). The variations of uropathogens according to age and menopause status were not significantly different.</p> <p>The resistance rates of <it>E. coli </it>isolates for ampicillin, ampicillin-sulbactam, amoxicillin-clavulonate, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, fluoroquinolones (FQ), co-trimoxazole (TMP-SMX) and gentamicin were 55.1%, 32.7%, 32.7%, 23.4%, 15.9%, 25.2%, 41.1%, 6.1% respectively. FQ were the most common prescribed antibiotics (77.9%) (<it>P </it>< 0.001), followed by TMP-SMX (10.7%), fosfomycin (9.2%), nitrofurantoin (2.1%). Treatment durations were statistically longer than the recommended 3-day course (<it>P </it>< 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Empirical use of FQ in uUTI should be discouraged because of increased antimicrobial resistance rates.</p

    “Ethereal Journeys” of a Wanderer in William Cowper and Yahya Kemal Beyatlı

    This study investigates the heterotopic representations of home and evening in the selected poems of William Cowper and Yahya Kemal Beyatlı. The study starts with the discussion of William Cowper and Yahya Kemal Beyatlı as unique poets in their national literatures to consolidate their comparable qualities based on their personal lives and their poetic styles and to clarify such a choice for the comparative analysis of the poets. Then, the study elaborates on the significance of the recurrent images related to home and evening since the concept of ‘home’ serves as a powerful metaphor, representing the coexistence of opposite realms in the poetries of Cowper and Beyatlı. Similarly, the transitional moment of evening symbolises the gradual shift in the speakers’ perception as they navigate between different imaginary spaces through observation and imagination, which creates the idea of journey/ wandering and a constant desire for searching in the poems by the two poets. Besides adapting Foucault’s theory of space in “Of Other Spaces” for the comparative analysis of the poems, the study also suggests that the narrators of Cowper and Beyatlı find solace and a sense of renewal within the confines of their homes or the natural landscape providing a recuperative space with the affirming reminiscences. Hence, in Cowper’s long narrative poem, The Task (1785) and Beyatlı’s poems from Our Own Vault of Heaven, The Idea of Journey and Communion (1961) the image of a protected home catalyses the rational boundaries and language, enabling the speakers to cope with their recurring sorrows/ anxieties. The study concludes that an English pre-Romantic/ neo-classical poet and a Turkish neo-classical poet can poeticise similar contradictory feelings of joy and despondence in the natural phenomenon of evening and the comforting space of home

    Associations between anthropometric indicators of adiposity and body fat percentage in normal weight young adults

    The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the associations between various anthropometric adiposity screening indices and body fat percentage estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A total of 186 (95 male and 91 female) normal weight (body mass index [BMI] = 18.5- 24.9 kg/m2) young adults (mean age= 20.96 ± 2.03 years) were measured on body fat percentage, body height, body mass, waist and hip circumferences. Abdominal volume index, body adiposity index, BMI, body roundness index, conicity index, reciprocal ponderal index, waist to height ratio, waist to height 0.5 ratio, and waist to hip ratio were calculated accordingly. Results revealed significant gender effects in all main anthropometric measurements. Except for waist to hip ratio, results indicated significant associations between anthropometric indices and BIA in both male and female participants. BIA results were found to be largely associated with BMI and abdominal volume index in both genders. BlandAltman analysis showed good agreements between these indices and BIA. Considerable associations and agreements highlight the potential importance and the use of several anthropometric proxies to estimate body adiposity among male and female non-overweight/obese young adults. Despite continuing discussion regarding its accuracy, BMI seems to be useful for monitoring body adiposity within this cohort

    This study tries to evaluate Rupert Brooke’s “The Soldier,” Edward Thomas’ “Adlestrop” and Isaac Rosenberg’s “Break of Day in the Trenches” by demonstrating the three poets’ ideological stances during WWI. The difficulties of the trench life are apparent in their poems but what makes their poems different from each other is the ideology lying behind the poems. Brooke, Thomas, and Rosenberg represent three different perspectives on the popular patriotism and Englishness during the war period. While Brooke’s poems function as a deliberate representation of the dominant government policies, the poems of Thomas and Rosenberg create an opponent voice by delineating the harsh conditions of the war period and hollowness of the policies about war

Tabanidae türlerinin kromozom sayısının 2n = 12 dan 2n =18'e kadar değiştiği ve aynı kromozom sayısına sahip türlerde kromozomlar arasında morfolojik farlılıkların olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Toplam olarak 72 kromozom analiz edilmiş ve ortalama TCL (Total Chroniosome Length) 61,511 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Çalışılan türlerden, Atylotus fulvus'un 2n = 18, Tabanus autumnalis'in 2n = 14, T. bifarius'un 2n = 16, T. bromius'un 2n = 12, T. cordiger'in 2n = 12, T. quatuornotatus"un 2n = 16, T. unifasciatus'un 2n = 12, Haematopota italica'nın 2n = 14, H. pandazisi'nin 2n = 14 ve Dasyrhamphis umbrinus'un 2n = 12 kromozoma sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir ve bu kromozomlara ait morfometrik ölçümler (Kromozom uzunluğu, relatif uzunluk, kol oranı) gerçekleştirilmiştir

    In this paper, the habitats of Tabanidae larvae in West Anatolia were studied for the first time. The larvae of 25 horse flies species and subspecies had been collected in several points differed by biotopical conditions and identified. Descriptions of new subspecies of Haematopota pallens bozdagensis ssp. nova, and its larva as well as unknown earlier larvae of Tabanus portschinskii Olsufjev, 1937, Philipomyia graeca Fabricius, 1794, Dasyrhamphis carbonarius Meigen, 1820 and Nemorius abbassianae Leclercq, 1960 were given.In this paper, the habitats of Tabanidae larvae in West Anatolia were studied for the first time.     Synthesis and activity determination of new H2S releasing drug active molecules in microglia cells

    Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, Kimya Ana Bilim Dalı, Organik Kimya Bilim DalıHidrojen sülfür (H2S), memeli canlılarda enzimatik veya enzimatik olmayan yollarla sentezlenen ve antiinflamatuar, antikanser, antioksidan gibi biyolojik etkinliklere sahip olduğu bilinen önemli bir uyarı molekülüdür. Bununla birlikte, çeşitli H2S salıcıları ve türevlerinin de biyoaktif bileşikler olması, bu alana olan ilginin artmasını sağlamıştır. Bu amaçla, tez çalışmasında literatürde H2S salıcı olarak tanımlanan 5-fenil-3H-1,2-ditiyol-3-tiyon (ADT) ve tiyobenzamit (TB) iskelet yapıları seçilerek 28 yeni türevi sentezlenmiş, yapıları çeşitli spektroskopik analizlerle doğrulanmıştır. Sentezlenen bileşiklerin H2S salınımı yapıp yapmadıkları metilen mavisi yöntemi kullanılarak tayin edilmiş ve tüm bileşiklerin değişen derişimlerde H2S salma yeteneğine sahip olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmanın ikinci kısmında bu bileşiklerin, LPS uygulaması ile inflamasyon modeli oluşturulan SIM-A9 mikroglia hücrelerindeki sitotoksitesi değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın devamında toksik özellik göstermeyen bileşiklerin, inflamasyon durumunda artan NO üretimini baskılama düzeyleri araştırılmış ve en iyi baskılamayı S4, S15, T7 ve T9 bileşiklerinin yaptığı gözlenmiştir. Genel olarak, çalışmalar bu bileşiklerin antiinflamatuar ve antikanserojenik moleküller olarak etken olabileceklerini göstermekle beraber, bu özelliklerin ileri in vitro ve in vivo çalışmalar ile geliştirilmesi gerekmektedir.Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important signaling molecule that is synthesized enzymatically or non-enzymatically in mammals and is known to have biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant. However, the fact that various H2S releasing compounds and their derivatives are bioactive compounds has increased the interest in this field. For this purpose, in the present thesis study, 5-phenyl-3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (ADT) and thiobenzamide (TB) skeleton structures, which are defined as H2S releasers in the literature, were selected and 28 new derivatives were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by various spectroscopic analyzes. The H2S releasing capacities of the synthesized compounds were determined using the methylene blue method and it was determined that all compounds had the ability to release H2S at varying concentrations. In the second part of the study, the cytotoxicities of these compounds in LPS treated SIM-A9 microglia cells, as an inflammation model were evaluated. Following this, the compounds without any cytotoxic properties were also evaluated for their ability to supress LPS induced NO production. and accordingly, it was observed that S4, S15, T7 and T9 showed highest supression on inflmaation related NO increase. Overall, results showed that these compounds may have potential as antiinflamatory and anticancer compounds that should be confirmed by further studies in the future
