Doing Sociomateriality Research In Information Systems

This paper agrees with Mueller et al.'s (2016) view that researchers who want to adopt a sociomaterial approach often find themselves confused regarding research methods. However, it departs from Mueller's et al. suggestion to seek guidance from the structural-functionalist approach of Parsons' and Shils' (1951) General Theory of Action. The paper argues that finding a methodological framework for research following a sociomaterial approach has to be consistent with the philosophy, ontology and roots of this approach and that it is limiting to read the post-human approach of sociomateriality through a structural-functionalist lens. The paper briefly reviews the roots of the sociomaterial approach in sociology and information systems and offers a methodological guidance based on Actor Network Theory (ANT) and post ANT/Feminist lenses.</jats:p

Naomi Wallace's "In the Heart of America": The Portrait of a Woman's Body As an Ideological Text

This paper shows how a female body, considered a representative of its nation’s ideology, is often the main target of political violence and violations. Naomi Wallace’s In the Heart of America uses the sexual frustrations of all its women characters to reflect the violent physical and mental pressures of imperial war and its consequent times. Their physical defects signal the hostile times they live in, which are usually reflected on the female body as carrier and displayer of the ideologies and social constructions of the era, turning women’s bodies into representatives of their nation’s sociopolitical ideology. They have their regions’ ideology inscribed on their bodies as physical wounds, making these bodies battlefields on which colonizers and soldiers demonstrate their political muscle. Wallace demonstrates how the female body, through its sexual orientation, its color, its exposure, and its movements and gestures, can tell the whole story of violence and create a drama of great effectEste trabajo muestra cómo un cuerpo femenino, considerado representativo de la ideología de su nación, es a menudo objetivo principal de la violencia y las violaciones políticas. The Impact of Crowdsourcing on Organisational Practices:The Case of Crowdmapping

In this paper, we investigate the possible impact of crowdsourcing on organisational practices. We answer the research question of whether and to what extent the practices of crowdmapping impact humanitarian organisations. To answer this question, we examine a crowdmapping initiative during a natural disaster. The data collection is based on forty interviews with different actors including crowdmappers, humanitarian organisations, government specialists and technology providers. Concepts from structuration theory are applied to conceptualise and make sense of the data. The findings reveal the process of change that took place in the practices of a humanitarian organisation. They also show that these changes recursively impacted the practices of crowdmapping. We then argue that there is a duality of change between the micro-practices of crowdmapping and the macro-practices of a humanitarian organisation. The implications of the study on research and practice are then discussed

This study describe about one of the activities in information seeking behaviour model proposed by Carol Kuhlthau. This study used a qualitative exploratory with a qualitative approach. In this study, the data accumulation was done by interview, observation and by literature study. In this case, author chose exploration activities therein describes the use of resources and constraints experienced during the seeking information. The result showed that the mural artist use resources from the internet, combining print and the electronic media, as well as using life experience and observation of the environment. Hepatoprotective effects of citric acid and aspartame on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic damage in rats

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of citric acid or the sweetening agent aspartame on the CCl4-induced hepatic injury in rats. Citric acid (10 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg or 1000 mg/kg), aspartame (0.625 or 1.25 mg/kg) or silymarin (25 mg/kg) was given once daily orally simultaneously with CCl4 and for one week thereafter. The administration of citric acid at 100 mg/kg or 1000 mg/kg to CCl4-treated rats reduced elevated plasma ALT by 44.1-63.3 %, AST by 47.8-70.6 %, ALP by 41.7-67.2 %, respectively compared to controls. Aspartame at 0.625 or 1.25 mg/kg reduced plasma ALT by 39.8-52.0 %, AST by 43.2-52.4 % and ALP by 50.0-68.5 %, respectively. Meanwhile, silymarin at 25 mg/kg reduced ALT, AST and ALP levels by 52.7, 62.2 and 64.7 %, respectively. On histology, citric acid at 1000 mg/kg resulted in near normalization of liver tissue. Vacuolar degeneration and necrosis were markedly reduced by 1.25 mg/kg aspartame. These results indicate that treatment with citric acid or the sweetening agent aspartame protects against hepatocellular necrosis induced by CCl4

Effect of ciprofloxacin incorporation in PVA and PVA bioactive glass composite scaffolds

International audienceScaffolds are implants used to deliver cells, drugs, and genes into the body in a local controlled release pattern which offers many advantages over systematic drug delivery. Composite scaffolds of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and quaternary bioactive glass (46S6 system) with different ratios of glass contents were prepared by the lyophilisation technique. The broad spectrum antibiotic ciprofloxacin (Cip) was impregnated to the scaffold during the fabrication in a concentration of 5, 10 and 20%. Biodegradation rate and in-vitro mineralization of the prepared scaffolds were performed by soaking the scaffolds in simulated body fluid (SBF). Phase identification, microstructure, porosity, bioactivity, mechanical properties and drug release pattern in PBS were characterized by XRD, SEM coupled with EDS, Hg-porosimeter, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), universal testing machine, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-spectrophotometer, respectively. A porous scaffold has been obtained with porosity up to 85%. By increasing the glass contents in the prepared scaffold the porosity and the degradation rate decrease however, the compressive strength was enhanced. A sustained drug release pattern was observed with a quasi-Fickian diffusion mechanism. The formulated ciprofloxacin loaded porous polyvinyl alcohol scaffold gave an acceptable physicochemical properties and was able to deliver the drug in a prolonged release pattern which offers a distinguish treatment for osteomylitis as well as local antibacterial effect
