    R. S. Thomas: The Infinite Quest for Welsh Identity

    R. S. Thomas (1913-2000) abounded with antinomies: a passionate advocate of Welsh nationalism he wrote in English; a man of devout faith who all his life experienced the elusiveness of God; an undemonstrative man he composed the most tender elegies for his wife; a poet who hardly ever left the narrow confines of north Wales but who at his death was hailed as a major European poet. He is known for his strong nationalism, his strong dislike for the English “colonizing” Wales, and his intense desire for Wales to have an independent national identity. Objective— The main objective of this research paper is to evaluate the unexplored, less known and sometimes unpredictable poet R S Thomas termed as “one of the major English language and European poets of the 20th century”. The most appropriate perspective for the study of Thomas's works may perhaps be to view him as an Anglo-Welsh writer

    Entrepreneurship Through Start-ups in Hill Areas Using Photovoltaic Systems

    There is large potential for generating solar power in Uttarakhand (India) endowed with natural resources. The extensive use of solar energy through solar PV panels in Distributed and Renewable Electricity Generation is significant to utilize multi climatic zones of hilly areas. In this regard, UREDA (Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency) targets to achieve a huge boost of solar PV battery backup with approved subsidy budget of INR 6 billion to 50 billion by 2019/20 under JNNSM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission). This investment will increase productivity, enhance employment opportunities and improve quality of education. However, maximization of power output from panels used for same is achieved through use of MPPT (Maximum Power Point Trackers). The commercially installed solar power systems can be made to accomplish higher efficiency by implementing MPPT systems in start ups. In this paper, the effort is made to use MPPT system designed by intelligent controller for implementation in PV based utility systems. The regulated voltage output from MPPT system is obtained irrespective of fluctuations in environment. These variations are tested for changing temperature and irradiance due to shading or partial unavailability of sun. The results of same have been optimized through MATLAB/SIMULINK. The model designed is intended to be a beneficial source for PV engineers and researchers to provide high efficiency with the use of MPPT

    Highly Permeable Perfluorinated Sulfonic Acid Ionomers for Improved Electrochemical Devices: Insights into Structure-Property Relationships.

    Rapid improvements in polymer-electrolyte fuel-cell (PEFC) performance have been driven by the development of commercially available ion-conducting polymers (ionomers) that are employed as membranes and catalyst binders in membrane-electrode assemblies. Commercially available ionomers are based on a perfluorinated chemistry comprised of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) matrix that imparts low gas permeability and high mechanical strength but introduces significant mass-transport losses in the electrodes. These transport losses currently limit PEFC performance, especially for low Pt loadings. In this study, we present a novel ionomer incorporating a glassy amorphous matrix based on a perfluoro(2-methylene-4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane) (PFMMD) backbone. The novel backbone chemistry induces structural changes in the ionomer, restricting ionomer domain swelling under hydration while disrupting matrix crystallinity. These structural changes slightly reduce proton conductivity while significantly improving gas permeability. The performance implications of this trade-off are assessed, which reveal the potential for substantial performance improvement by incorporation of highly permeable ionomers as the functional catalyst binder. These results underscore the significance of tailoring material chemistry to specific device requirements, where ionomer chemistry should be rationally designed to match the local transport requirements of the device architecture

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links field.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is predicted to become the third most common cause of death and disability worldwide by 2020. The prevalence of COPD defined by the lower limit of normal was estimated using high-quality spirometry in surveys of 14 populations aged ≥ 40 yrs. The strength and consistency of associations were assessed using random effects meta-analysis. Pack-years of smoking were associated with risk of COPD at each site. After adjusting for this effect, we still observed significant associations of COPD risk with age (OR 1.52 for a 10 yr age difference, 95% CI 1.35-1.71), body mass index in obese compared with normal weight (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.37-0.67), level of education completed (OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.67-0.87), hospitalisation with a respiratory problem before age 10 yrs (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.42-3.91), passive cigarette smoke exposure (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.05-1.47), tuberculosis (OR 1.78, 95%CI 1.17-2.72) and a family history of COPD (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.19-1.90). Although smoking is the most important risk factor for COPD, other risk factors are also important.     Worldwide patterns of bronchodilator responsiveness: results from the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study.

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links field.Criteria for a clinically significant bronchodilator response (BDR) are mainly based on studies in patients with obstructive lung diseases. Little is known about the BDR in healthy general populations, and even less about the worldwide patterns. 10 360 adults aged 40 years and older from 14 countries in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia participated in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study. Spirometry was used before and after an inhaled bronchodilator to determine the distribution of the BDR in population-based samples of healthy non-smokers and individuals with airflow obstruction. In 3922 healthy never smokers, the weighted pooled estimate of the 95th percentiles (95% CI) for bronchodilator response were 284 ml (263 to 305) absolute change in forced expiratory volume in 1 s from baseline (ΔFEV(1)); 12.0% (11.2% to 12.8%) change relative to initial value (%ΔFEV(1i)); and 10.0% (9.5% to 10.5%) change relative to predicted value (%ΔFEV(1p)). The corresponding mean changes in forced vital capacity (FVC) were 322 ml (271 to 373) absolute change from baseline (ΔFVC); 10.5% (8.9% to 12.0%) change relative to initial value (ΔFVC(i)); and 9.2% (7.9% to 10.5%) change relative to predicted value (ΔFVC(p)). The proportion who exceeded the above threshold values in the subgroup with spirometrically defined Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage 2 and higher (FEV(1)/FVC <0.7 and FEV(1)% predicted <80%) were 11.1%, 30.8% and 12.9% respectively for the FEV(1)-based thresholds and 22.6%, 28.6% and 22.1% respectively for the FVC-based thresholds.     Occupation of racial grief, loss as a resource : learning from ‘The Combahee River Collective Black Feminist Statement'

    The methodology of ‘occupation’ through rereading The Combahee River Collective Black Feminist Statement (The Combahee River Collective, in: James, Sharpley-Whiting (eds) The Black Feminist Reader. Blackwell Publishers Ltd., Oxford, pp 261–270, 1977) demonstrates the necessity of temporal linkages to historical Black feminist texts and the wisdom of Black feminist situated knowers. This paper argues that racism produces grief and loss and as long as there is racism, we all remain in racial grief and loss. However, in stark contrast to the configuration of racial grief and loss as something to get over, perhaps grief and loss can be thought about differently, for example, in terms of racial grief and loss as a resource. This paper questions Western Eurocentric paternalistic responses to Black women’s ‘talk about their feelings of craziness… [under] patriarchal rule’ (The Combahee River Collective 1977: 262) and suggests alternative ways of thinking about the psychological impact of grief and loss in the context of racism. In this paper, a Black feminist occupation of racial grief and loss includes the act of residing within, and the act of working with the constituent elements of racial grief and loss. The proposal is that an occupation of racial grief and loss is a paradoxical catalyst for building a twenty-first century global intersectional Black feminist movement

    Impact of Urban Design features on Happiness in Rotterdam

    This study explains the impact of urban design features on happiness of residents in the neighbourhoods of Rotterdam, on account of subjective and objective measures, and associations with health and social ties. Looking at necessity to understand factors affecting well-being as well as to establish relationship between ‘importance of place and concept of happiness’, the study has intended to recognize remarkable urban design features that help in promoting happiness. The concept of happiness used in the research is self-reported individual ‘overall happiness’ which is combination of ‘how well one feels generally’ (aspect) and ‘how favourable one compares with various standards of success’ (appraisal). Five urban design features- urban facilities, greenery, public space, transport nodes and mixed use were selected to analyse the relationship with self-reported happiness of the residents. Additionally, objective measures for selected urban design features were taken for all neighbourhoods of Rotterdam from municipality of Rotterdam that is a reliable source while subjective measures were collected only from two neighbourhoods- Cool and Terbregge, of Rotterdam because of constraints on time and resources. Selection of neighbourhood was done on the greater variance in urban design features of the two neighbourhoods. Cool is characterized as mixed land use and presence of physical infrastructure while Terbregge can be termed as sub-urban with abundance of natural elements. Ordered probit model was used to examine association of urban design features with self- reported happiness. Both, objective and subjective, measures of urban design features were analysed separately to find their significance with happiness. Additionally, Big seven factors for happiness given by Richard Layard were taken as control variables in the modelling. Research statistics showed significance of objective measures of greenery and land use mix with happiness while on account of subjective measures, availability of daily need shops, public spaces and land use mix were relevantly associated with happiness. However, presence of transport nodes in the neighbourhood demonstrated non-significance with happiness on account of both the measures. The research concluded the importance of urban design features for happiness. The way neighbourhoods are planned and built have relevant impact on well-being of the residents. However, on implications and applicability of specific features of urban design, it demands further investigations and suggests future guidelines for research because of the several limitations of the current study. The study findings also exhibited significance of both the measures of urban design for happiness. Happiness depends on perception as well as real qualities. Moreover, with the exhibition of importance of urban design for happiness, the research corroborated ongoing trend of inclusion of non-pecuniary measures, more specific physical environment, while assessing well-being

    Shedding light on the economic costs of long-duration power outages: A review of resilience assessment methods and strategies

    This paper provides a literature review of methods and modeling techniques to estimate the cost of power system outages, along with the value of outage mitigation or system resilience. Regulators, policymakers, and infrastructure owners have a growing need to understand the methods for estimating the benefits of resilience improvements of electric infrastructure against natural and man-made disasters. There is a broad literature that estimates the cost of short-duration outages and a small but developing literature on estimating the cost of long-duration outages. This article reviews the models used to estimate the cost of outages and discusses their relative strengths. Additionally, this paper identifies key questions from stakeholders regarding resilience investment and maps them to the relevant models that would help answer them. We include recommendations for future work to include recent advances in regional economic modeling that can estimate region and demographic-specific costs and the distributional consequences of potential resilience projects
