The Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) NASA's first operational robotic system
NASA has completed the preliminary definition phase of the Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) and is now preparing to begin the detailed design and fabrication phase. The FTS will be designed and built by Martin Marietta Astronautics Group in Denver, CO, for the Goddard Space Flight Center, in support of the Space Station Freedom Program. The design concepts for the FTS are discussed, as well as operational scenarios for the assembly, maintenance, servicing and inspection tasks which are being considered for the FTS. The upcoming Development Test Flight (DTF-1) is the first of two shuttle test flights to test FTS operations in the environment of space and to demonstrate the FTS capabilities in performing tasks for Space Station Freedom. Operational planning for DTF-1 is discussed as well as development plans for the operational support of the FTS on the space station
The development test flight of the flight telerobotic servicer
The Development Test Flight (DTF-1) is the first of two shuttle flights to test operations of the Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) in space and to demonstrate its capabilities in performing tasks for Space Station Freedom. The DTF-1 system, which Martin Marietta Astronautics Group is designing and building for the Goddard Space Flight Center, will be flown in December, 1991, as an attached payload on the shuttle. The design of the DTF-1 system, the tests to be performed, and the data to be gathered are discussed
The flight telerobotic servicer and technology transfer
The Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) project at the Goddard Space Flight Center is developing an advanced telerobotic system to assist in and reduce crew extravehicular activity (EVA) for Space Station Freedom (SSF). The FTS will provide a telerobotic capability in the early phases of the SSF program and will be employed for assembly, maintenance, and inspection applications. The current state of space technology and the general nature of the FTS tasks dictate that the FTS be designed with sophisticated teleoperational capabilities for its internal primary operating mode. However, technologies such as advanced computer vision and autonomous planning techniques would greatly enhance the FTS capabilities to perform autonomously in less structured work environments. Another objective of the FTS program is to accelerate technology transfer from research to U.S. industry

Design concept for the Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FITS)
NASA has just completed an in-house Phase B Study (one of three studies) for the preliminary definition of a teleoperated robotic device that will be used on the National Space Transportation System (NSTS) and the Space Station to assist the astronauts in the performance of assembly, maintenance, servicing, and inspection tasks. This device, the Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS), will become a permanent element on the Space Station. Although it is primarily a teleoperated device, the FTS is being designed to grow and evolve to higher states of autonomy. Eventually, it will be capable of working from the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV) to service free-flying spacecraft at great distances from the Space Station. A version of the FTS could also be resident on the large space platforms that are part of the Space Station Program
Characterization of Fungal Communities Associated with Aquilaria spp. for the Production of Agarwood. [Poster-B123]
Aquilaria is a tree genus distributed in Southeast Asia, known for its oleoresin production. The induction of this oleoresin is described as a stress reaction by injury and, or fungal infection. In response to this stress, Aquilaria spp. produces an oleoresin that accumulates in the wood. The wood of not-injured trees is clear. The wood of injured trees tints and becomes odorous; we call it Agarwood. The quality of the oils, extracted from the wood, is variable. These variations are due to, in part, to the diversity of fungi that infect Aquilaria . The objective of this work is to characterize the fungal communities associated with Agarwood in areas where Aquilaria is native (South East Asia) and in an introductory area (French Guiana). We collected wood samples of Aquilaria from these countries to sequence fungal ITS2. Thus, we obtained 693,961 sequences grouped into 535 OTUs (Ascomycetes 87%, Basidiomycetes 10.5%). Fungi specific to a geographical area were highlighted as well as ubiquitous fungi in different areas. These results allow considering the role of these microorganisms in the quality of Agarwood
Systems Engineering Technical Authority: A Path to Mission Success
The systems engineering of space missions to study planet Earth has been an important focus of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) since its inception. But all space missions are becoming increasingly complex and this fact, reinforced by some major mishaps, has caused NASA to reevaluate their approach to achieving safety and mission success. A new approach ensures that there are adequate checks and balances in place to maximize the probability of safety and mission success. To this end the agency created the concept of Technical Authority which identifies a key individual accountable and responsible for the technical integrity of a flight mission as well as a project-independent reporting path. At the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) this responsibility ultimately begins with the Mission Systems Engineer (MSE) for each satellite mission. This paper discusses the Technical Authority process and then describes some unique steps that are being taken at the GSFC to support these MSEs in meeting their responsibilities
NGS identification of fungi potentially implicatedin the production of agarwood from Aquilariaz spp. trees
Aquilaria is a tree species belonging to the Thymeleaceae family. When Aquilaria sp. is injured, it can produce agarwood. Agarwood is characterized by a darker wood colour than the healthy one and by a strong perfume that is much esteemed by perfumers and some oriental religious communities. The production of agarwood is presumed to depend on environmental factors, among them fungi. The aim of this work is to obtain an overview of fungi present in Aquilaria sp. from different countries. Aquilaria sp. is endemic to South East Asia including notably Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, where it is cultivated to produce agarwood. In French Guiana, farmers would like to locally produce agarwood in their field. That's why we wonder if fungal communities naturally present in French Guiana present characteristics making it compatible with the induction of agarwood. In this study, NGS was used to characterize fungal communities associated with agarwood: 693,961 sequences that cover ITS2 estimated about 250bp have been obtained. These sequences have been grouped into 535 OTUs, displaying 100% identity. In this study, 87% were Ascomycetes and 10.5% were Basidiomycetes. These results show also differences in fungal communities between aboveground and belowground parts of the tree. Likewise, differences between countries within fungal communities were also observed
