Invasive bacterial infections in Gambians with sickle cell anaemia in an era of widespread Pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccination
Background: There is relatively little data on the aetiology of bacterial infections in patients with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) in West Africa, and no data from countries that have implemented conjugate vaccines against both Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of SCA patients admitted to the Medical Research Council Unit, The Gambia during a five-year period when there was high coverage of Hib and Pneumococcal conjugate vaccination. We evaluated 161 admissions of 126 patients between April 2010 and April 2015. Results: Pathogenic bacteria were identified in blood cultures from 11 of the 131 admissions that had cultures taken (8.4%, 95% CI 4.5-14.1%). The most frequent isolate was Salmonella Typhimurium (6/11; 54.5%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (2/11; 18.2%) and other enteric Gram-negative pathogens (2/11; 18.2%) and there was one case of H. influenzae non-type b bacteraemia (1/11; 9.1%). There were no episodes of bacteraemia caused by S. pneumoniae or Hib. Conclusions: The low prevalence of S. pneumoniae and Hib, and the predominance of non-typhoidal Salmonella as a cause of bacteraemia suggest the need to reconsider optimal antimicrobial prophylaxis and the empirical treatment regimens for patients with SCA
Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT) splitting in the Presence of Band-Limited White Gaussian Noise
We investigate the effect of band-limited white Gaussian noise (BLWGN) on
electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT)
splitting, when performing atom-based continuous-wave (CW) radio-frequency (RF)
electric (E) field strength measurements with Rydberg atoms in an atomic vapor.
This EIT/AT-based E-field measurement approach is currently being investigated
by several groups around the world as a means to develop a new SI traceable RF
E-field measurement technique. For this to be a useful technique, it is
important to understand the influence of BLWGN. We perform EIT/AT based E-field
experiments with BLWGN centered on the RF transition frequency and for the
BLWGN blue-shifted and red-shifted relative to the RF transition frequency. The
EIT signal can be severely distorted for certain noise conditions (band-width,
center-frequency, and noise power), hence altering the ability to accurately
measure a CW RF E-field strength. We present a model to predict the changes in
the EIT signal in the presence of noise. This model includes AC Stark shifts
and on resonance transitions associated with the noise source. The results of
this model are compared to the experimental data and we find very good

Mechanical behaviour of sustainable concrete with waste ceramic aggregate replacement
Sustainability and material use have been becoming increasingly important in industry and academia in recent years, prompting investigations for ways to improve sustainability in construction materials. Past studies have investigated natural aggregate replacement in concrete with a variety of materials, including recycled concrete, glass, bricks, ceramics, and even automobile tires. These studies have produced varied results. Ceramic materials are a great prospective material for aggregate replacement due to their desirable mechanical properties and availability in waste streams worldwide. This study focusses on coarse aggregate replacement with ceramic tile materials of virgin and waste origins, reaching as high as 100% replacement. To limit the variability experienced in previous studies, great emphasis was placed on limiting parameters tested between series to the physical properties of the replacement ceramic materials alone. Test results thus far have shown that natural coarse aggregate can be replaced in ratios as high as 100%, with only minimal effects on the mechanical properties of the resulting concrete. Compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths have shown minor change, with only a slight increase in elastic modulus. This study shows that ceramic waste material has great potential for use in concrete when a suitable preparation method is used.published_or_final_versio
Practical Sparse Matrices in C++ with Hybrid Storage and Template-Based Expression Optimisation
Despite the importance of sparse matrices in numerous fields of science,
software implementations remain difficult to use for non-expert users,
generally requiring the understanding of underlying details of the chosen
sparse matrix storage format. In addition, to achieve good performance, several
formats may need to be used in one program, requiring explicit selection and
conversion between the formats. This can be both tedious and error-prone,
especially for non-expert users. Motivated by these issues, we present a
user-friendly and open-source sparse matrix class for the C++ language, with a
high-level application programming interface deliberately similar to the widely
used MATLAB language. This facilitates prototyping directly in C++ and aids the
conversion of research code into production environments. The class internally
uses two main approaches to achieve efficient execution: (i) a hybrid storage
framework, which automatically and seamlessly switches between three underlying
storage formats (compressed sparse column, Red-Black tree, coordinate list)
depending on which format is best suited and/or available for specific
operations, and (ii) a template-based meta-programming framework to
automatically detect and optimise execution of common expression patterns.
Empirical evaluations on large sparse matrices with various densities of
non-zero elements demonstrate the advantages of the hybrid storage framework

Mitochondria directly influence fertilisation outcome in the pig
The mitochondrion is explicitly involved in cytoplasmic regulation and is the cell's major generator of ATP. Our aim was to determine whether mitochondria alone could influence fertilisation outcome. In vitro, oocyte competence can be assessed through the presence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) as indicated by the dye, brilliant cresyl blue (BCB). Using porcine in vitro fertilisation (IVF), we have assessed oocyte maturation, cytoplasmic volume, fertilisation outcome, mitochondrial number as determined by mtDNA copy number, and whether mitochondria are uniformly distributed between blastomeres of each embryo. After staining with BCB, we observed a significant difference in cytoplasmic volume between BCB positive (BCB+) and BCB negative (BCB-) oocytes. There was also a significant difference in mtDNA copy number between fertilised and unfertilised oocytes and unequal mitochondrial segregation between blastomeres during early cleavage stages. Furthermore, we have supplemented BCB- oocytes with mitochondria from maternal relatives and observed a significant difference in fertilisation outcomes following both IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) between supplemented, sham-injected and non-treated BCB- oocytes. We have therefore demonstrated a relationship between oocyte maturity, cytoplasmic volume, and fertilisation outcome and mitochondrial content. These data suggest that mitochondrial number is important for fertilisation outcome and embryonic development. Furthermore, a mitochondrial pre-fertilisation threshold may ensure that, as mitochondria are diluted out during post-fertilisation cleavage, there are sufficient copies of mtDNA per blastomere to allow transmission of mtDNA to each cell of the post-implantation embryo after the initiation of mtDNA replication during the early postimplantation stages
Validation of the Harvard Lyman-α in situ water vapor instrument: Implications for the mechanisms that control stratospheric water vapor
Building on previously published details of the laboratory calibrations of the Harvard Lyman-α photofragment fluorescence hygrometer (HWV) on the NASA ER-2 and WB-57 aircraft, we describe here the validation process for HWV, which includes laboratory calibrations and intercomparisons with other Harvard water vapor instruments at water vapor mixing ratios from 0 to 10 ppmv, followed by in-flight intercomparisons with the same Harvard hygrometers. The observed agreement exhibited in the laboratory and during intercomparisons helps corroborate the accuracy of HWV. In light of the validated accuracy of HWV, we present and evaluate a series of intercomparisons with satellite and balloon borne water vapor instruments made from the upper troposphere to the lower stratosphere in the tropics and midlatitudes. Whether on the NASA ER-2 or WB-57 aircraft, HWV has consistently measured about 1–1.5 ppmv higher than the balloon-borne NOAA/ESRL/GMD frost point hygrometer (CMDL), the NOAA Cryogenic Frost point Hygrometer (CFH), and the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Aura satellite in regions of the atmosphere where water vapor is <10 ppmv. Comparisons in the tropics with the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite show large variable differences near the tropopause that converge to ~10% above 460 K, with HWV higher. Results we show from the Aqua Validation and Intercomparison Experiment (AquaVIT) at the AIDA chamber in Karlsruhe do not reflect the observed in-flight differences. We illustrate that the interpretation of the results of comparisons between modeled and measured representations of the seasonal cycle of water entering the lower tropical stratosphere is dictated by which data set is used
On the molecules of numerical semigroups, Puiseux monoids, and Puiseux algebras
A molecule is a nonzero non-unit element of an integral domain (resp.,
commutative cancellative monoid) having a unique factorization into
irreducibles (resp., atoms). Here we study the molecules of Puiseux monoids as
well as the molecules of their corresponding semigroup algebras, which we call
Puiseux algebras. We begin by presenting, in the context of numerical
semigroups, some results on the possible cardinalities of the sets of molecules
and the sets of reducible molecules (i.e., molecules that are not
irreducibles/atoms). Then we study the molecules in the more general context of
Puiseux monoids. We construct infinitely many non-isomorphic atomic Puiseux
monoids all whose molecules are atoms. In addition, we characterize the
molecules of Puiseux monoids generated by rationals with prime denominators.
Finally, we turn to investigate the molecules of Puiseux algebras. We provide a
characterization of the molecules of the Puiseux algebras corresponding to
root-closed Puiseux monoids. Then we use such a characterization to find an
infinite class of Puiseux algebras with infinitely many non-associated

Numerical Hermitian Yang-Mills Connections and Vector Bundle Stability in Heterotic Theories
A numerical algorithm is presented for explicitly computing the gauge
connection on slope-stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau manifolds.
To illustrate this algorithm, we calculate the connections on stable monad
bundles defined on the K3 twofold and Quintic threefold. An error measure is
introduced to determine how closely our algorithmic connection approximates a
solution to the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations. We then extend our results by
investigating the behavior of non slope-stable bundles. In a variety of
examples, it is shown that the failure of these bundles to satisfy the
Hermitian Yang-Mills equations, including field-strength singularities, can be
accurately reproduced numerically. These results make it possible to
numerically determine whether or not a vector bundle is slope-stable, thus

The effect of thermophoresis on the discharge parameters in complex plasma experiments
Thermophoresis is a tool often applied in complex plasma experiments. One of
the usual stated benefits over other experimental tools is that changes induced
by thermophoresis neither directly depend on, nor directly influence, the
plasma parameters. From electronic data, plasma emission profiles in the
sheath, and Langmuir probe data in the plasma bulk, we conclude that this
assumption does not hold. An important effect on the levitation of dust
particles in argon plasma is observed as well. The reason behind the changes in
plasma parameters seems to be the change in neutral atom density accompanying
the increased gas temperature while running at constant pressure.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
Summertime distribution and relations of reactive odd nitrogen species and NOyin the troposphere over Canada
We report here large-scale features of the distribution of NOx, HNO3, PAN, particle (NO3) (-) and NOy in the troposphere from 0.15 to 6 km altitude over central Canada. These measurements were conducted in July-August 1990 from the NASA Wallops Electra aircraft as part of the joint United States-Canadian Arctic Boundary Layer Expedition (ABLE) 3B-Northern Wetlands Study. Our findings show that this region is generally NOx limited, with NOx mixing ratios typically 20-30 parts per trillion by volume (pptv). We found little direct evidence for anthropogenic enhancement of mixing ratios of reactive odd nitrogen species and NOy above those in "background" air. Instead, it appears that enhancements in the mixing ratios of these species were primarily due to emissions from several day old or CO -rich -NOx-poor smoldering local biomass-burning fires. NOx mixing ratios in biomass-burning impacted air masses were usually <50 pptv, but those of HNO3 and PAN were typically 100-300 pptv representin g a twofold-threefold enhancement over "background" air. During our study period, inputs of what appeared to be aged tropical air were a major factor influencing the distribution of reactive odd nitrogen in the midtroposphere over northeastern North America. These air masses were quite depleted in NOy (generally <150 pptv), and a frequent summertime occurrence of such air masses over this region would imply a significant influence on the reactive odd nitrogen budget. Our findings show that the chemical composition of aged air masses over subarctic Canada and those documented in the Arctic during ABLE 3A have strikingly similar chemistries, suggesting large-scale connection between the air masses influencing these regions
