Few-layer MoS2 flakes as hole-selective layer for solution-processed hybrid organic hydrogen-evolving photocathodes
High-efficiency organic photocathodes, based on regioregular
poly(3-hexylthiophene) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (rr-P3HT:PCBM)
bulk heterojunction sandwiched between charge-selective layers, are emerging as
efficient and low-cost devices for solar hydrogen production by water
splitting. Nevertheless, stability issues of the materials used as
charge-selective layers are hampering the realization of long-lasting
photoelectrodes, pointing out the need to investigate novel and stable
materials. Here, we propose MoS2 nano-flakes, produced by Li-aided exfoliation
of bulk counterpart, as efficient atomic-thick hole-selective layer for
rr-P3HT:PCBM-based photocathodes. We carried out a p-type chemical doping to
tune on-demand the MoS2 Fermi level in order to match the highest occupied
molecular orbital level of the rr-P3HT, thus easing the hole collection at the
electrode. The as-prepared p-doped MoS2-based photocathodes reached a
photocurrent of 1.21 mA cm-2 at 0 V vs. RHE, a positive onset potential of 0.56
V vs. RHE and a power-saved figure of merit of 0.43%, showing a 6.1-fold
increase with respect to pristine MoS2-based photocathodes, under simulated 1
Sun illumination. Operational activity of the photocathodes over time and under
1 Sun illumination revealed a progressive stabilization of the photocurrents at
0.49 mA cm-2 at 0 V vs. RHE. These results pave the way towards the
exploitation of layered crystals as efficiency-boosters for scalable hybrid
organic H2-evolving photoelectrochemical cells.Comment: 33 pages, 16 figure

Nowadays, the majority of world population lives in urban areas and this portion is going to increase in the coming decades. The health impact of urban areas is well established and described in scientific literature. Italian health and hygiene legislation dealing with urban health is fragmented and not coordinated with the regulation about environment and city planning. The overlapping of legal competences between different authorities and the conflict of attribution between the Central State and Regional Governments deeply contributed to generate uncertainty. The authors here analyse the Italian regulatory framework and depict its lacks in terms of public health protection
Oncolytic adenovirus loaded with L-carnosine as novel strategy to enhance the antitumor activity
Oncolytic viruses are able to specifically replicate, infect, and kill only cancer cells. Their combination with chemotherapeutic drugs has shown promising results due to the synergistic action of virus and drugs; the combinatorial therapy is considered a potential clinically relevant approach for cancer. In this study, we optimized a strategy to absorb peptides on the viral capsid, based on electrostatic interaction, and used this strategy to deliver an active antitumor drug. We used L-carnosine, a naturally occurring histidine dipeptide with a significant antiproliferative activity. An ad hoc modified, positively charged L-carnosine was combined with the capsid of an oncolytic adenovirus to generate an electrostatic virus-carnosine complex. This complex showed enhanced antitumor efficacy in vitro and in vivo in different tumor models. In HCT-116 colorectal and A549 lung cancer cell lines, the complex showed higher transduction ratio and infectious titer compared with an uncoated oncolytic adenovirus. The in vivo efficacy of the complex was tested in lung and colon cancer xenograft models, showing a significant reduction in tumor growth. Importantly, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of complex on tumor growth reduction. We found that complex induces apoptosis in both cell lines, by using two different mechanisms, enhancing viral replication and affecting the expression of Hsp27. MITS: the Multi-Imaging Transient Spectrograph for SOXS
The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a medium resolution spectrograph R~4500
proposed for the ESO 3.6 m NTT. We present the optical design of the UV-VIS arm
of SOXS which employs high efficiency ion-etched gratings used in first order
(m=1) as the main dispersers. The spectral band is split into four channels
which are directed to individual gratings, and imaged simultaneously by a
single three-element catadioptric camera. The expected throughput of our design
is >60% including contingency. The SOXS collaboration expects first light in
early 2021. This paper is one of several papers presented in these proceedings

The Acquisition Camera System for SOXS at NTT
SOXS (Son of X-Shooter) will be the new medium resolution (R4500 for a
1 arcsec slit), high-efficiency, wide band spectrograph for the ESO-NTT
telescope on La Silla. It will be able to cover simultaneously optical and NIR
bands (350-2000nm) using two different arms and a pre-slit Common Path feeding
system. SOXS will provide an unique facility to follow up any kind of transient
event with the best possible response time in addition to high efficiency and
availability. Furthermore, a Calibration Unit and an Acquisition Camera System
with all the necessary relay optics will be connected to the Common Path
sub-system. The Acquisition Camera, working in optical regime, will be
primarily focused on target acquisition and secondary guiding, but will also
provide an imaging mode for scientific photometry. In this work we give an
overview of the Acquisition Camera System for SOXS with all the different
functionalities. The optical and mechanical design of the system are also
presented together with the preliminary performances in terms of optical

The VIS detector system of SOXS
SOXS will be a unique spectroscopic facility for the ESO NTT telescope able
to cover the optical and NIR bands thanks to two different arms: the UV-VIS
(350-850 nm), and the NIR (800-1800 nm). In this article, we describe the
design of the visible camera cryostat and the architecture of the acquisition
system. The UV-VIS detector system is based on a e2v CCD 44-82, a custom
detector head coupled with the ESO continuous ow cryostats (CFC) cooling system
and the NGC CCD controller developed by ESO. This paper outlines the status of
the system and describes the design of the different parts that made up the
UV-VIS arm and is accompanied by a series of contributions describing the SOXS

Dermatological remedies in the traditional pharmacopoeia of Vulture-Alto Bradano, inland southern Italy
Dermatological remedies make up at least one-third of the traditional pharmacopoeia in southern Italy. The identification of folk remedies for the skin is important both for the preservation of traditional medical knowledge and in the search for novel antimicrobial agents in the treatment of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI). Our goal is to document traditional remedies from botanical, animal, mineral and industrial sources for the topical treatment of skin ailments. In addition to SSTI remedies for humans, we also discuss certain ethnoveterinary applications.
Field research was conducted in ten communities in the Vulture-Alto Bradano area of the Basilicata province, southern Italy. We randomly sampled 112 interviewees, stratified by age and gender. After obtaining prior informed consent, we collected data through semi-structured interviews, participant-observation, and small focus groups techniques. Voucher specimens of all cited botanic species were deposited at FTG and HLUC herbaria located in the US and Italy.
We report the preparation and topical application of 116 remedies derived from 38 plant species. Remedies are used to treat laceration, burn wound, wart, inflammation, rash, dental abscess, furuncle, dermatitis, and other conditions. The pharmacopoeia also includes 49 animal remedies derived from sources such as pigs, slugs, and humans. Ethnoveterinary medicine, which incorporates both animal and plant derived remedies, is addressed. We also examine the recent decline in knowledge regarding the dermatological pharmacopoeia.
The traditional dermatological pharmacopoeia of Vulture-Alto Bradano is based on a dynamic folk medical construct of natural and spiritual illness and healing. Remedies are used to treat more than 45 skin and soft tissue conditions of both humans and animals. Of the total 165 remedies reported, 110 have never before been published in the mainland southern Italian ethnomedical literature
