    New Examples of Dimension Zero Categories

    We say that a category D\mathscr{D} is dimension zero over a field FF provided that every finitely generated representation of D\mathscr{D} over FF is finite length. We show that Rel(R)\textrm{Rel}(R), a category that arises naturally from a finite idempotent semiring RR, is dimension zero over any infinite field. One special case of this result is that Rel\textrm{Rel}, the category of finite sets with relations, is dimension zero over any infinite field.Comment: updates for JOA submissio

    Transformative Learning: Suggestive Assumptions and Practices

    This essay argues that most proposed forms for schooling learning are founded on assumptions associated with Normal Science. While most of these forms of school learning are inherently conservative, even the most well know approaches to transformative learning, such as critical pedagogy, are also beholden to the dictates of Normal Science. The limitations of Normal Science suggest a need for learning approaches that push against the limits of this paradigm. Such a push is suggested by looking at the assumptive framework and practices associated with a newly developed technology platform—UnEarth. UnEarth moves between Normal Science and Experimental Art is an attempt to create communities of difference, share knowledge across those differences, store knowledge in personal and community libraries that show gaps and strengths in learning as well as interests that can be used for curriculum planning and future job recruitment and do so within an “open text” that creates possibilities as opposed to directing participants to do this or that. By doing so communication patterns, the nature of schoolwork and the stop-go-stop nature of education were transformed. These findings suggest that technology can stand side by side with transformative ambitions, a stance not possible with platforms like UnEarth

    Rewriting Critical Pedagogy for Public Schools: Technological Possibilities

    Critical pedagogy has been a powerful and persistent force in academia, informing dissertations, courses, and research. Despite this impact on higher education, critical pedagogy has not had similar success in public schools, even though these institutions host large numbers of marginalized students. One reason for this lack of influence in public schools is that the space of schooling is not particularly receptive to the ambitions and priorities of critical pedagogy. In this article, we build on the claim that there is a poor fit between public schools and critical pedagogy by laying out an argument for improving this fit by extending critical pedagogy. This extension can lead to the creation of new school spaces—spaces of difference—that will provide a more conducive environment to use critical pedagogy. To do this, we take the unconventional position that critical pedagogy be used with technology to create spaces of difference that will further opportunities for marginalized students and their ability to “name the world.” An in-depth consideration of these spaces of difference and their relation to critical pedagogy is presented to reveal how it can lead to forms of critical learning to address the needs of all students, including those most marginalized as they move through public schools.

    Reclaiming heritage: colourization, culture wars and the politics of nostalgia

    This article considers the discursive continuities between a specifically liberal defence of cultural patrimony, evident in the debate over film colourization, and the culture war critique associated with neo-conservatism. It examines how a rhetoric of nostalgia, linked to particular ideas of authenticity,canonicity and tradition,has been mobilized by the right and the left in attempts to stabilize the confguration and perceived transmission of American cultural identity. While different in scale, colourization and multiculturalism were seen to create respective (postmodern) barbarisms against which defenders of culture, heritage and good taste could unite. I argue that in its defence of the ‘classic’ work of art, together with principles of aesthetic distinction and the value of cultural inheritance,the anti-colourization lobby helped enrich and legitimize a discourse of tradition that, at the end of the 1980s, was beginning to reverberate powerfully in the conservative challenge to a ‘crisis’ within higher education and the humanities. This article attempts to complicate the contemporary politics of nostalgia, showing how a defence of cultural patrimony has distinguished major and minor culture wars, engaging left and right quite differently but with similar presuppositions

The definitive version was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 115 (2018): 8161-8166, doi:10.1073/pnas.1806296115.Copper is an essential cofactor of cytochrome c oxidase (CcO), the terminal enzyme of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Inherited loss-of-function mutations in several genes encoding proteins required for copper delivery to CcO result in diminished CcO activity and severe pathologic conditions in affected infants. Copper supplementation restores CcO function in patient cells with mutations in two of these genes, COA6 and SCO2, suggesting a potential therapeutic approach. However, direct copper supplementation has not been therapeutically effective in human patients, underscoring the need to identify highly efficient copper transporting pharmacological agents. By using a candidate-based approach, we identified an investigational anticancer drug, elesclomol (ES), that rescues respiratory defects of COA6-deficient yeast cells by increasing mitochondrial copper content and restoring CcO activity. ES also rescues respiratory defects in other yeast mutants of copper metabolism, suggesting a broader applicability. Low nanomolar concentrations of ES reinstate copper-containing subunits of CcO in a zebrafish model of copper deficiency and in a series of copper-deficient mammalian cells, including those derived from a patient with SCO2 mutations.     Social Media, Professional Media, and Mobilization in Contemporary Britain:Explaining the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Citizens’ Movement 38 Degrees

Within a period of a few years, the internet-enabled UK citizens’ movement 38 Degrees has amassed a membership of 3 million and now sits alongside similar entities such as America’s MoveOn, Australia’s GetUp! and the transnational movement Avaaz. In this article, we contribute to current thinking about digital media and mobilisation by addressing some of the limitations of existing research on these movements and on digital activism more generally. We show how 38 Degrees’ digital network repertoires coexist interdependently with its strategy of gaining professional news media coverage. We explain how the oscillations between choreographic leadership and member influence and between digital media horizontalism and elite media-centric work constitute the space of interdependencies in which 38 Degrees acts. These delicately balanced relations can quickly dissolve and be replaced by simpler relations of dependence on professional media. Yet despite its fragility, we theorise about how 38 Degrees may boost individuals’ political efficacy, irrespective of the outcome of individual campaigns. Our conceptual framework can be used to guide research on similar movements

    Mechanism of subunit interaction at ketosynthase-dehydratase junctions in trans-AT polyketide synthases

    Modular polyketide synthases (PKSs) produce numerous structurally complex natural products with diverse applications in medicine and agriculture. They typically consist of several multienzyme subunits that utilize structurally-defined docking domains (DDs) at their N- and C-termini to ensure correct assembly into functional multi-protein complexes. Here we report a fundamentally different mechanism for subunit assembly in trans-AT modular PKSs at the junction between ketosynthase (KS) and dehydratase (DH) domains. This involves direct interaction of a largely unstructured docking domain (DD) at the C-terminus of the KS with the surface of the downstream DH. Acyl transfer assays and mechanism-based cross-linking established that the DD is required for the KS to communicate with the acyl carrier protein appended to the DH. Two distinct regions for binding of the DD to the DH were identified using NMR spectroscopy, carbene foot-printing and mutagenesis, providing a foundation for future elucidation of the molecular basis for interaction specificity

    The Long Exception: Rethinking the Place of the New Deal in American History

    The Long Exception examines the period from Franklin Roosevelt to the end of the twentieth century and argues that the New Deal was more of an historical aberration—a byproduct of the massive crisis of the Great Depression—than the linear triumph of the welfare state. The depth of the Depression undoubtedly forced the realignment of American politics and class relations for decades, but, it is argued, there is more continuity in American politics between the periods before the New Deal order and those after its decline than there is between the postwar era and the rest of American history. Indeed, by the early seventies the arc of American history had fallen back upon itself. While liberals of the seventies and eighties waited for a return to what they regarded as the normality of the New Deal order, they were actually living in the final days of what Paul Krugman later called the interregnum between Gilded Ages. The article examines four central themes in building this argument: race, religion, class, and individualism
